Atlassian Software Engineer Interview Guide

The short answer: Atlassian's engineering interview page describes a coding interview in two parts, Data Structures and then Code Design, in the language you choose, a 60-minute system design interview, a manager interview and a values interview usually run by someone outside the hiring team. Interviewers then hold a debrief, and an independent Hiring Committee that never met you decides from the written feedback and your CV. Atlassian publishes sample coding prompts for each track. Candidate reports add a recruiter call and a one-hour technical screen run by an outside interview partner before the main interviews. Last reviewed October 2026.

Atlassian software engineer interview: quick answers

QuestionShort answer
How many interview rounds?Atlassian lists five interviews: two coding parts, system design, a manager interview and a values interview. Candidate reports add a recruiter call and a technical screen first, and describe the five interviews as a virtual onsite of 4 to 5 hours.
What do the rounds test?Atlassian says coding is judged on how you reason about trade-offs such as verbosity versus optimization, and the Code Design part asks you to design working code for your track. System design is a discussion where the interviewer may change a constraint to see how you adapt. The values interview tests Atlassian's five values.
Can I use AI tools?Atlassian does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews; ask your recruiter. Its engineering interview page says nothing on the subject. Atlassian says it uses AI with human review to process applications, but recruiters make the decisions.
Are interviews remote?Yes. Atlassian's US postings say interviews and onboarding happen virtually because it is a distributed-first company, and many US software engineer roles are fully remote within the US.
How long does it take?Atlassian publishes no timeline. Candidate reports put the process at about 4 to 6 weeks, with team matching after the onsite.
Who makes the decision? An independent Hiring Committee that did not interview you. Atlassian says it reviews only the interview feedback and your CV and decides holistically.

A Week in the Life of a Atlassian Software Engineer

Illustrative mid-level week · Atlassian

An illustrative week for a mid-level engineer, built from practices Atlassian describes in its own publications and job postings. Real weeks vary a lot by team.

Culture notes

  • Written design culture: RFCs on a Confluence template, open company-wide, per the 2021 engineering handbook.
  • Every pull request needs a peer approval and a green build, and since January 2026 an AI reviewer comments first; Atlassian says PR cycle time fell 45%.
  • Reliability work outranks roadmap work, and every incident gets a blameless review within 10 business days.
  • Engineers join a ShipIt hackathon twice a year, and new engineers start with TEAM Camp, an in-person onboarding program in their first month.

Key takeaway: Expect written RFCs, peer-approved pull requests with an AI first reviewer, flagged rollouts and reliability work ahead of the roadmap.

Atlassian software engineer levels and pay

Your level sets the bar you are interviewed against and the pay band of the offer.

Atlassian Software Engineer Levels

Each level has different expectations, compensation, and interview focus.

What This Level Looks Like

Graduate program with training and mentorship; builds and ships features end to end on products such as Jira, Confluence and Trello.

Interview Focus at This Level

Atlassian's early careers guide describes a timed online coding test, then 3 to 4 virtual interviews on craft, leadership and values.

Find your level

Practice with questions tailored to your target level.

Start Practicing

Atlassian's US postings do not print a level for Software Engineer or Senior Software Engineer roles. One Principal posting names P60 and mentions coaching P40 and P50 engineers, and a Bengaluru Senior Principal posting names P70. Atlassian does not say which titles match P40 and P50, so we label rows by posting title.

Pay in Atlassian's US job postings

Atlassian's US postings print base pay for new hires in three geographic zones and say you may also be eligible for benefits, bonuses, commissions and equity. The table shows Zone A, which Atlassian's pay zone page defines as the SF Bay Area and the New York Tri-State area.

PostingLocationUS base salary range
Software Engineer, 2027 Graduate U.S.Seattle, hybrid (Zone A shown; Seattle is Zone B)$122.4K to $159.8K
Backend, Frontend and Full Stack Software Engineer (3 postings)San Francisco or US remote (Zone A)$150.3K to $196.2K
Senior Software Engineer (3 postings, including Senior Backend and Senior Full Stack)San Francisco, Seattle or US remote (Zone A)$180K to $235K
Principal Software Engineer (3 postings; the Atlassian Design System posting names P60)San Francisco or US remote (Zone A)$209.7K to $273.8K
Senior Principal Software Engineer and Senior Principal Engineer (2 postings)SF, Mountain View, Seattle or US remote (Zone A)$243.9K to $318.4K

Zone B (Boston, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle and Washington D.C.) and Zone C (everywhere else) are lower. For the Backend, Frontend and Full Stack postings they are $135.3K to $176.6K and $124.7K to $162.9K; for Principal, $188.7K to $246.4K and $174.1K to $227.2K. The graduate role is hybrid in Seattle, a Zone B city, where the posting lists $110.2K to $143.8K. Rows use posting titles because only one posting names a level. Ranges seen October 27, 2026.

Coding interview, part 1: Data Structures

60mVideo coding in your chosen language

Coding skill and problem solving. Atlassian says it watches how you reason about trade-offs such as verbosity versus optimization, and that missing a line of code is not a deal-breaker.

coding

Tips for this round

  • Pick the language you know best and set up your own IDE in advance.
  • Name the trade-offs you are making, such as a shorter solution against a faster one.

Tips to Stand Out

  • Code in the language you know best; Atlassian says how you think matters most and a missing line is not a deal-breaker.
  • Say your trade-offs out loud, such as verbosity versus optimization, since that is how Atlassian judges coding.
  • Work through the sample coding prompt Atlassian publishes for your track before the Code Design part.
  • In system design, explain how you explore the problem, the questions you ask, reliability and cost, who you would partner with and which technologies you would use, with precise examples from past work.
  • Prepare one or two past projects for the manager interview: who you worked with, the technical challenges and the business case.
  • Learn Atlassian's five values, since one full interview tests them, and say so when you do not know something.

Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass

  • ✗Atlassian's Hiring Committee weighs skills, strengths and behaviors together, and values have their own interview, so coding alone does not decide the outcome.
  • ✗Candidate reports say interviewers look for code quality, adapting to new requirements, thinking before coding and stating pros and cons; candidates weak on these may be asked for an additional round.
  • ✗A candidate guide repeats a third-party claim that a weak values result can sink a strong technical loop; Atlassian does not say this.
  • ✗Candidate reports describe a candidate who passed the first screen and was not hired after a design and data structures round, and another whose level was set by one interviewer's view.

Based on Atlassian's own pages and candidate reports.

Atlassian publishes no timeline. Candidate reports put the process at about 4 to 6 weeks and say a candidate who falls short in one round may be asked to do an additional round. The final call sits with the Hiring Committee, not with the interviewers. Last reviewed October 2026.

What is different at Atlassian

  • Published sample prompts. Atlassian links real sample coding prompts for Software Engineer and Principal Engineer tracks in Frontend, Backend, Fullstack and SRE versions, so you can practice the exact style.
  • A Code Design part. The coding interview has a second part focused on designing working code, and you choose the language for both parts. Atlassian says it hires language agnostic and teaches its preferred languages after you join.
  • A full values interview, often with a non-engineer. Someone from outside the hiring team, for example Sales, HR or Customer Support, tests five values that include "Open company, no bullshit" and "Don't #@!% the customer".
  • An independent Hiring Committee. The people who decide never interviewed you and see only the written feedback and your CV, so clear communication in each round matters for what the interviewers write down.
  • An outside first screen. Candidate reports say the first technical screen is usually run by an outside interview partner rather than an Atlassian engineer, and the partner says the same in its own case study.
  • Virtual and zoned. The loop is virtual, many US roles are fully remote, and every US posting prints base pay for three geographic zones.

Atlassian software engineer interview questions

Coding problems from our bank

From the DataInterview coding bank: the problems tagged to Atlassian first, then classic problems on the topics most loops cover. Open one to solve it in the code editor.

System design practice

Practice prompts we wrote around Atlassian's products. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline of what a strong answer covers.

Design issue search for Jira Cloud, where users filter issues by project, status, assignee and free text across many tenants.

MediumSystem design

Sample Answer

Clarify the query language, result freshness after an edit, and tenant sizes, from a 5-person team to a site with millions of issues. Keep the issue store as the source of truth and feed a search index through change events, with the tenant ID in every document and every query. Large tenants may need their own index shards so they do not slow small ones. Enforce project permissions at query time and cache permission sets per user. Discuss indexing lag, reindexing after a schema change, and what a weak answer misses: one tenant leaking into another.

Fundamentals practice

Concept questions on the topics Atlassian's rounds lean on, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.

What is an error budget and how does it change what a team works on?

MediumFundamentals

Sample Answer

An SLO sets a target such as 99.9% of requests succeeding over 30 days, and the error budget is the 0.1% that may fail. While budget remains, the team ships features; when it is spent, reliability work comes first. It turns a vague argument about stability into a number both engineers and product managers can see.

Behavioral practice

Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral rounds. They are not reported interview questions.

Tell me about a time you shared bad news or an unpopular opinion openly.

MediumBehavioral

Sample Answer

Atlassian lists "Open company, no bullshit" as a value. Explain what you said, to whom, why you chose to be direct and what changed as a result.

Practice more behavioral questions

Practice problem: which wiki pages can a user see?

python

A team wiki stores pages in a tree. Each page is a tuple (page_id, parent_id, allowed), where parent_id is None for a top-level page and allowed is either None (no restriction) or a set of user names. A user can see a page only if every page on the path from the top of the tree down to it, including the page itself, is unrestricted or lists the user. Pages may appear in any order, and every parent_id refers to a page in the list. Return the sorted list of page ids the user can see. Example: pages [('home', None, None), ('eng', 'home', {'ana', 'raj'}), ('rfc', 'eng', None), ('hr', 'home', {'li'})] and user 'ana' return ['eng', 'home', 'rfc'].

Python
1from typing import List, Optional, Set, Tuple
2
3def visible_pages(pages: List[Tuple[str, Optional[str], Optional[Set[str]]]], user: str) -> List[str]:
4 """Return the sorted ids of pages the user can see."""

Practice in the Engine

How to prepare

A plan for the Atlassian loop, most important first:

  1. Work through the sample coding prompt Atlassian publishes for your track (Frontend, Backend, Fullstack or SRE) in the language you know best.
  2. Practice Code Design problems: small classes with clear interfaces and tests, then add a new requirement and adapt the design.
  3. Practice data structures problems while saying your trade-offs out loud, since Atlassian judges how you reason more than a perfect line.
  4. Practice system design for multi-tenant products like Jira and Confluence, covering reliability and cost, and rehearse adapting when a constraint changes.
  5. Prepare one or two projects for the manager interview: who you worked with, the technical challenges and the business case.
  6. Prepare a plain-language story for each of Atlassian's five values, for an interviewer who may not be an engineer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds is the Atlassian software engineer interview?

Atlassian's engineering interview page lists five interviews: Data Structures coding, Code Design coding, system design, a manager interview and a values interview, followed by a debrief and a Hiring Committee review. Candidate reports add a recruiter call and a one-hour technical screen before them.

Can I use AI in an Atlassian interview?

Atlassian does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews; ask your recruiter. Its engineering interview page says nothing about it. One candidate guide describes an AI-assisted coding round with an unfamiliar repo and a built-in coding agent, reported by 2026 internship candidates; the same guide says no such round is documented for every loop.

Which language can I use in the Atlassian coding interview?

Any language you like. Atlassian says it cares most about how you think and how you weigh trade-offs, and that missing a line of code is not a deal-breaker. It names Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Go and Kotlin as preferred languages it teaches after you join.

What is the Atlassian values interview?

A full interview on Atlassian's five values: Open company, no bullshit; Build with heart and balance; Don't #@!% the customer; Play, as a team; and Be the change you seek. Atlassian says it is informal and usually run by someone outside the hiring team.

How much do Atlassian software engineers make?

In Zone A (the SF Bay Area and New York Tri-State), US postings list base pay of $150.3K to $196.2K for Backend, Frontend and Full Stack Software Engineer, $180K to $235K for Senior, $209.7K to $273.8K for Principal and $243.9K to $318.4K for Senior Principal. Zones B and C are lower, and postings say bonuses, commissions and equity may also apply.

What are the software engineer levels at Atlassian?

Postings show the titles Software Engineer, Senior, Principal and Senior Principal, plus a graduate role. Only some postings print a P-level: a Principal posting names P60 and a Bengaluru Senior Principal posting names P70.

Can Atlassian engineers work remotely?

Often. Atlassian says its people choose to work from an office, from home or both, and many US software engineer roles are fully remote within the US, some limited to Pacific or Mountain time. The US graduate role is hybrid in Seattle.
