The short answer: Barclays calls its quant group Quantitative Analytics (QA), split into Markets QA, Risk QA and the eTrading Statistical Modelling and Development (SMAD) team, and hires students through Quantitative Finance programs. No US Quantitative Analytics posting was open in October 2026, and the open New York quant roles are Strats roles that lean toward quant developer work. Barclays publishes only its general process: online assessments or a phone interview, then an assessment centre or a final interview. Candidate guides for quant analyst roles add a recorded video, a technical interview on probability, statistics and options pricing, and a US Superday of about four interviews. Barclays quantitative analyst interview: quick answers
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| How many interview rounds? | Barclays does not publish a count for QA. Its campus process is an application, initial assessments and an assessment centre with two or three stages. Experienced hires take online assessments or a phone interview, then a final interview. Candidate guides describe a technical interview and a US Superday of about four interviews. |
| What do the rounds test? | Barclays says its assessments cover how you might perform at work and its Values, and that the phone interview covers your experience and technical skills. Candidate guides describe probability, statistics, options pricing, stochastic calculus, time series and coding in Python or C++. |
| Can I use AI tools? | No. Barclays says "third-party AI tools are not permitted during your Barclays interview," including transcription bots and meeting assistants. It says any use will result in your interview being stopped and your application withdrawn. |
| How much does a Barclays quant make in the US? | No US Quantitative Analytics posting was open, so there is no QA range to show. The two New York Strats postings list base salary of $125K to $175K for an AVP and $150K to $225K for a VP, and name no bonus. |
| How long does it take? | Barclays does not publish a timeline for QA hiring. |
| Is Strats the same as Quantitative Analytics at Barclays? | They overlap. QA builds pricing, risk and trading models. The current New York Strats postings sit in Cross Markets and ask for Python with Java and KDB to build back-testing and analytics platforms, so they lean toward quant developer work. |

A Week in the Life of a Barclays Quantitative Analyst
Illustrative week · Barclays
An illustrative week for a quantitative analyst, built from what Barclays says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary by team.
Culture notes
- Barclays describes QA as a global group of modellers and developers covering all asset classes.
- Campus candidates are aligned to one core area, such as Risk or Markets, during assessment.
- Work is hybrid, with fixed anchor days in the office set by the business area.
- Barclays treats AI tools in interviews as grounds to stop the interview and withdraw the application.
Key takeaway: Expect to build and support pricing, risk or trading models with the people who use them, and to write a fair amount of code.

Pay in Barclays's US job postings
No US Quantitative Analytics posting was open in October 2026, so these are the two open New York Strats postings. Both state base salary only and say other compensation may be available, without naming a bonus.
| Posting | Location | US base salary range |
|---|---|---|
| Markets Strats - AVP | New York, NY | $125K to $175K |
| Equities Derivatives Strat, VP | New York, NY | $150K to $225K |
Both rows are Strats roles in Cross Markets that lean toward quant developer work. No US QA campus pay was readable, because the New York QA graduate posting had closed. Ranges seen October 29, 2026.
Barclays quantitative analyst interview process
The application, assessment and final-round steps follow Barclays' general early careers and experienced-hire pages, which are not specific to QA. The recorded video, the technical interview and the content of the US Superday come from candidate guides.
Screen
3 roundsOnline assessments or phone interview
Barclays says the assessments look at how you might perform at work, your preferred ways of working and fit with its Values, and the phone interview covers experience and technical skills. Candidate guides describe a timed coding test in Python or C++ with quantitative aptitude questions for quant candidates.
Tips for this round
- Take the practice tests first and read the timing instructions in your email.
- Candidate guides describe a timed coding test in Python or C++, so practice under time pressure.
- In a phone interview, be ready to summarize your technical skills in a few minutes.
Recorded video interview (candidate guides)
Mostly behavioral and motivation questions, sometimes a technical one. Barclays' own process pages do not describe this step.
Technical interview (candidate guides)
Probability, statistics and options pricing, including Black-Scholes, Bayes and PCA, plus coding problems and a CV deep dive. One guide groups quant rounds into options pricing and derivatives, statistics and time series, and algorithmic coding.
Onsite
1 roundAssessment centre or final interview
Barclays says the campus assessment centre includes a motivational interview with a member of the leadership team, and some experienced roles add role plays, case studies or presentations with a brief beforehand. US candidate guides describe one behavioral, two math and statistics and one coding interview. UK reports describe a group trading exercise instead.
Tips for this round
- Prepare for a motivational interview with a member of the leadership team.
- Expect separate math and statistics, coding and behavioral interviews in US reports.
- If you get a brief for a case or presentation, structure it before the day.
Tips to Stand Out
- Use the practice tests on the assessment platform before your online assessments.
- Check your email for instructions on timing and whether you must finish an assessment in one sitting.
- Prepare concrete examples from past experience that show the skills and behaviours the role needs.
- Review Barclays' Purpose, Values and ways of working before the assessment centre.
- Request adjustments, such as extra time, in your application if you need them.
- Candidate guides say to expect options pricing, probability and coding in Python or C++ in technical rounds.
Based on Barclays's own pages and candidate reports.
Barclays does not publish a timeline or how offers are decided. Candidate guides disagree on structure: one has a phone screen and then a roughly four-hour US Superday, another lists an online test, a video interview, a technical phone screen and a half-day Superday of four or five interviews. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Barclays
- Barclays names the function Quantitative Analytics and splits it three ways. Markets QA builds front-office pricing models, valuation adjustments and market and counterparty credit risk models. Risk QA builds credit, impairment, capital, stress testing, climate and operational risk models. SMAD in eTrading builds the algorithms behind automated pricing, market making and execution.
- Campus hiring runs through the Quantitative Finance Associate Summer Internship and Graduate Programmes, which cover Risk QA, Markets QA and eTrading. Where a location hires into several areas, Barclays aligns you to one core area, such as Risk or Markets, during the assessment process. The campus page says Risk QA and Markets QA have a US presence.
- No US Quantitative Analytics posting was open in October 2026. The open New York quant roles are Markets Strats (AVP) and Equities Derivatives Strat (VP) in Cross Markets. They ask for advanced Python with Java and KDB to build back-testing infrastructure and a flow research platform, which leans toward quant developer work.
- Several program facts on this page come from the 2027 London QA Associate Graduate Programme, which requires a master's or higher and opens with several weeks of training before a desk placement. Barclays did not have a readable US QA program posting, so check US details with your recruiter.
- Barclays bans AI tools in interviews. It says "third-party AI tools are not permitted during your Barclays interview," including transcription bots and meeting assistants, and that "Any use will result in your interview being stopped and your application withdrawn and may also impact your eligibility to apply for future roles at Barclays."
- Postings say candidates may be assessed on critical skills beyond the technical ones: risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, and digital and technology.

An early-warning signal fires for 90% of borrowers who will default and for 5% of borrowers who will not. The default rate is 2%. A borrower triggers the signal. What is the chance they default?
Sample Answer
Use Bayes. The chance of a signal and a default is 0.9 x 0.02 = 0.018. The chance of a signal without a default is 0.05 x 0.98 = 0.049. So the answer is 0.018 / (0.018 + 0.049) = 0.018 / 0.067, about 26.9%. Most signals are false alarms because defaults are rare, which is why a risk model reports precision as well as the hit rate.
You run PCA on daily changes in a swap curve. The eigenvalues are 9, 0.8 and 0.15, and the rest sum to 0.05. How much variance do the components explain, and what do they mean?
A loan has a 1.5% probability of default, 40% loss given default and $2M exposure at default. What is the expected loss, and why does regulatory capital use unexpected loss?
A credit spread follows an AR(1) process with coefficient 0.9 on daily data. What is the half-life of a shock?
Pricing and stochastic calculus practice

Estimate the price of an at-the-money 3-month call on a $100 stock with 20% volatility and zero rates. Then check it.
Sample Answer
The rule of thumb is 0.4 x S x sigma x sqrt(T) = 0.4 x 100 x 0.2 x 0.5 = 4.0. Exactly, d1 = sigma x sqrt(T) / 2 = 0.05 and d2 = -0.05, so the price is 100 x (N(0.05) - N(-0.05)) = 100 x 0.0399, about 3.99. The rule comes from N(x) being close to 0.5 + 0.4x near zero.
A stock trades at 50. A 1-year call and put struck at 50 trade at 5 and 2.5, and the rate is 4% continuously compounded. Is there an arbitrage?
You are long a delta-hedged option with gamma 0.05 per dollar. The stock moves $4 in a day. What is the gamma P&L, ignoring theta?
A swap with a counterparty has an expected exposure of about $10M over the next year. The counterparty has a 2% chance of default in that year and the loss given default is 60%. Estimate the CVA.
Modeling practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Barclays's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Build a model to project credit card losses under a stress scenario. How do you approach it?
Sample Answer
Define the target, such as charge-off rate or PD and LGD by segment. Link it to macro drivers such as unemployment and rates using history that includes a downturn. Keep the model interpretable so the scenario path explains the loss path. Validate out of time, test sensitivity to each driver and document limits. Risk QA builds stress testing and impairment models of this kind.
You are back-testing a systematic strategy on equity derivatives flow data. What can go wrong?
Design how an electronic market-making algorithm should move its quotes as its inventory builds up.
How would you compute the expected exposure profile of an interest rate swap for counterparty risk?
Behavioral practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Barclays's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Why Quantitative Analytics, and which area: Markets, Risk or eTrading?
Sample Answer
Barclays aligns campus candidates to one area, so have a clear answer. Connect your background to the work: pricing and stochastic calculus point to Markets QA, credit and econometrics to Risk QA, and statistics with fast code to SMAD.
Tell me about a time you turned a vague request into a tool someone used.

Explain a model you built to someone outside your field.
Practice problem: binomial tree option pricer
pythonA Markets QA team checks a pricing library against a simple lattice. Write binomial_price(spot, strike, rate, vol, years, steps, kind, american) that prices a call or put on a Cox-Ross-Rubinstein tree: dt = years / steps, u = e^(vol x sqrt(dt)), d = 1 / u, risk-neutral p = (e^(rate x dt) - d) / (u - d), and discount e^(-rate x dt) per step. For american=True, take the larger of the continuation value and the exercise value at every node. Raise ValueError for an unknown kind, non-positive inputs, fewer than 1 step, or p outside (0, 1). Example: binomial_price(100, 100, 0, 0.2, 1, 1) has u = 1.2214, p = 0.4502 and returns about 9.9668.

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Barclays loop, most important first:
- Decide which QA area you want, Markets, Risk or eTrading, since Barclays aligns campus candidates to one, and match your prep to it.
- Review Black-Scholes, Greeks, put-call parity and valuation adjustments for Markets QA, or PD, LGD, impairment and stress testing for Risk QA.
- Drill probability, Bayes, PCA and time series questions out loud, which candidate guides name for the technical rounds.
- Practice timed coding in Python or C++; for the New York Strats roles, add Python and Java development and data work.
- Prepare motivation and past-experience examples tied to Barclays' Values for the assessment centre and leadership interview.
- Plan to work without any AI or transcription tools, which Barclays bans in interviews.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Barclays quantitative analyst make in the US?
No US Quantitative Analytics posting was open in October 2026, and the New York QA graduate posting had closed, so there is no QA range to show. The two open New York Strats postings list base salary of $125K to $175K for Markets Strats AVP and $150K to $225K for Equities Derivatives Strat VP. Both say the range is base salary only and name no bonus.
Can I use AI tools in the Barclays quant interview?
No. Barclays says "third-party AI tools are not permitted during your Barclays interview. This includes the use of transcription bots and meeting assistants (or any applications that record, transcribe, or analyse conversations)." Any use stops the interview and withdraws your application.
What is the difference between Markets QA, Risk QA and SMAD?
Markets QA works with trading, sales and structuring on pricing models, valuation adjustments and market and counterparty credit risk models. Risk QA builds lending, impairment, capital, stress testing, climate and liquidity models, plus AI and ML. SMAD in eTrading researches and runs the algorithms for electronic market making and execution.
How do I join Barclays QA as a student?
Apply to the Quantitative Finance Associate Summer Internship or Graduate Programme. Internships are open to students in their penultimate or final year, or with a completed bachelor's, master's or PhD. Off-cycle internships of 3 to 6 months also run in Quantitative Analytics.
Is Barclays QA on site?
Barclays works hybrid. Colleagues are on site on fixed anchor days set by the business area, and the exact pattern is agreed with the hiring manager. QA roles appear in New York and London, among other locations.
Is the Strats role a quant analyst or a quant developer role?
It sits between the two. Markets Strats provides quantitative and analytical expertise with trading desks, covering models, back-testing and portfolio optimization, but the postings weigh Python, Java and KDB development heavily. Prepare for coding as well as derivatives and statistics.
What does the Barclays assessment centre include?
Barclays says it runs in person or virtually with two or three stages, including a motivational interview with a member of the leadership team. Expect questions on motivation, its Values and ways of working, and examples from past experience. US candidate guides describe a Superday with math, statistics and coding interviews for quants.
