The short answer: BlackRock has no single quant analyst title: the work sits in Aladdin Financial Engineering (AFE), which builds the models inside Aladdin, in Risk & Quantitative Analysis (RQA), in BlackRock Systematic and in quant research roles in BlackRock Global Markets. BlackRock says campus candidates in the Americas complete a recorded video interview, and Analytics & Modeling applicants, the campus route into AFE, also take an online coding test. Final interviews are with people from the function and may include a group exercise, presentation or case study. Candidate guides add a technical phone screen and final rounds on statistics, coding and quant finance. Last reviewed October 2026.

BlackRock quantitative analyst interview: quick answers
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| How many interview rounds? | BlackRock publishes its campus process: an application, a recorded video interview, a coding test for Analytics & Modeling, then interviews with the function. It does not publish a round count or an experienced-hire loop. Candidate guides describe a technical phone screen and 4 to 6 final rounds. |
| What do the rounds test? | BlackRock says final interviews cover the BlackRock Principles, your experience and your capabilities. Candidate guides describe time series, regression, PCA, probability, Python, Black-Scholes, SDEs and yield curves, plus a fit round on why BlackRock and Aladdin. |
| Can I use AI tools? | Not during interviews. BlackRock says "BlackRock does not permit the use of AI tools during any part of the live interview process, including conversations, technical assessments and video-recorded assessments". It allows AI for preparation, and says some technical roles may require specified AI use, which your recruiter will tell you about in advance. |
| How much does a BlackRock quant make? | Experienced New York postings list base ranges from $116K to $162K for Associates, and a Princeton VP posting lists $140K to $200K. The 2027 Full-Time Analyst Program lists $105K to $125K for Technology in New York. Experienced postings also mention an annual discretionary bonus. |
| How long does it take? | BlackRock says Quant Master's internship applications open in September and are reviewed on a rolling basis from October through December, with interviews in that window. |
| Which BlackRock team is closest to a bank quant analyst? | AFE is the closest. It researches and builds the risk models that run in Aladdin across fixed income, equities, derivatives and alternatives. RQA does independent risk oversight, and Systematic is closer to buy-side quant research. |

BlackRock quantitative analyst interview process
The application, recorded video, coding test and final-interview steps follow BlackRock's Americas student and FAQ pages. The technical phone screen and the topics in the final rounds come from candidate guides.
Screen
2 roundsPre-interview assessment: a recorded video interview, plus a coding test
Program-specific questions. The coding test is a series of coding questions followed by one video question, within 5 calendar days. BlackRock says neither can be retaken.
Tips for this round
- Plan each answer before you record; you get up to three minutes per question and one sitting.
- Practice timed Python problems for the coding test, which ends with one video question.
- Review everything before submitting, since neither step can be retaken.
Technical phone screen (candidate guides)
One guide describes stochastic calculus and quant finance with a coding warm-up. Another describes statistics, machine learning and programming, sometimes with a research discussion.
Onsite
1 roundInterviews with the function
BlackRock says they cover the BlackRock Principles, your experience and your capabilities. Candidate guides describe math and statistics (time series, regression, PCA, probability), coding in Python and C++ concepts, quant finance derivations such as Black-Scholes, SDEs and yield curves, and a fit round on why BlackRock and Aladdin.
Tips for this round
- Review time series, regression and PCA, which candidate guides name.
- Be able to derive Black-Scholes and explain yield curve basics.
- Prepare why BlackRock, why Aladdin and stories tied to the BlackRock Principles.
Tips to Stand Out
- Apply as soon as applications open, since BlackRock reviews them on a rolling basis.
- Review the recorded video and the coding test carefully before submitting, because neither can be retaken.
- Practice the STAR structure with specific examples from your own experience, and pause to think.
- Keep notes minimal in interviews and share what motivates you.
- Learn the BlackRock Principles: fiduciary to clients, One BlackRock, passion for performance, emotional ownership and commitment to a better future.
- Candidate guides say to prepare an answer on why BlackRock and why Aladdin.
Based on BlackRock's own pages and candidate reports.
BlackRock does not publish how offers are decided, and it says it does not give individual feedback on unsuccessful applications. Candidate guides disagree on length: one lists a recruiter screen, a technical phone screen, three technical rounds and a behavioral round; another lists an online assessment, a phone screen and a 5 to 6 hour Superday that may include a research presentation. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at BlackRock
- Quant titles are spread across business areas. AFE sits in Technology and is hired on campus as Analytics & Modeling. RQA sits in Analytics & Risk, with the campus function name Investment Risk & Quantitative Analysis. BlackRock Systematic sits in Investments as Quantitative Investing, and quant research seats also exist in BlackRock Global Markets. The older Financial Modeling Group name did not appear in any posting open in October 2026.
- AFE's Quantitative Research and Modeling team owns all analytics deployed into Aladdin, supporting over 200 models across single securities, securitized products, portfolio construction and risk, performance attribution, trading and liquidity, energy and climate, and ML and GenAI. AFE also works with Aladdin clients on how those analytics are used.
- This is buy-side quant work. RQA risk managers give independent oversight and constructive challenge to portfolio managers, and the fixed income team oversees an active platform of roughly $1 trillion. BlackRock Systematic says it manages over $200bn with 200+ professionals in San Francisco, New York and London.
- The Analytics & Modeling route adds a coding test to the recorded video interview. Applicants to both Software Engineering and Analytics & Modeling take two different coding tests. Neither the video nor the coding test can be retaken.
- BlackRock publishes a detailed AI rule. It says "BlackRock does not permit the use of AI tools during any part of the live interview process, including conversations, technical assessments and video-recorded assessments". It also says "Using AI to generate or suggest responses in real time, read scripts and/or provide content is not permitted, unless explicitly noted otherwise by your BlackRock recruiter." AI is allowed for preparation, and submitting work you cannot replicate or explain, including code, counts as inappropriate use.
- BlackRock works hybrid with at least 4 days a week in the office and 1 day from home, and some groups require more. It says visa sponsorship is offered only in limited cases based on business needs.

Prompts we wrote for this guide around BlackRock's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
A portfolio holds 60% in an asset with 20% volatility and 40% in one with 10% volatility. The correlation is 0.3. What is the portfolio volatility?
Sample Answer
Variance is 0.6^2 x 0.04 + 0.4^2 x 0.01 + 2 x 0.6 x 0.4 x 0.3 x 0.2 x 0.1 = 0.0144 + 0.0016 + 0.00288 = 0.01888. Volatility is the square root, about 13.7%. That is below the weighted average of 16% because the correlation is below 1. A risk model in Aladdin does the same sum with a full factor covariance matrix.
A fund has 18% volatility, the market has 15%, and their correlation is 0.8. What are the beta, the R-squared and the idiosyncratic volatility?
A $500M portfolio has a daily volatility of 1.2%. What is the 99% one-day parametric VaR, and the 10-day VaR?
A systematic strategy has an annual Sharpe ratio of 0.5 over a 4-year back-test. Is that evidence of skill?
Pricing and stochastic calculus practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around BlackRock's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
A bond has modified duration 6 and convexity 50. Yields rise by 100 basis points. Estimate the price change.
Sample Answer
The change is about -duration x dy + 0.5 x convexity x dy^2 = -6 x 0.01 + 0.5 x 50 x 0.0001 = -0.06 + 0.0025 = -5.75%. Convexity softens the loss when yields rise and adds to the gain when they fall.
The 1-year zero rate is 4% and the 2-year zero rate is 4.5%, both continuously compounded. What is the 1-year rate one year forward?
A stock at 100 follows geometric Brownian motion with 20% volatility and zero rates. What is the risk-neutral chance that a 1-year call struck at 100 finishes in the money?
A short rate follows a Vasicek model with speed 0.5 and long-run mean 4%, starting at 2%. What is the expected rate in 2 years?
Modeling practice

Design a factor risk model for an equity portfolio. How does it produce portfolio risk?
Sample Answer
Choose factors such as market, industry, country and style. Estimate each stock's exposures, then the factor covariance matrix and each stock's specific variance. Portfolio variance is the factor part, exposures times the factor covariance times exposures, plus the weighted specific variances. Check the forecasts against realized risk, and use the split to explain where risk comes from.
A portfolio beat its benchmark by 1.5% last quarter. How would you attribute the result?
Build a model to predict borrowing demand for securities in a lending program.
How would you validate a prepayment model for mortgage-backed securities?
Behavioral practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around BlackRock's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Tell me about a time you challenged a decision made by someone senior.
Sample Answer
RQA gives constructive challenge to portfolio managers. Use STAR: the decision, the evidence you gathered, how you raised it with respect and what changed. This fits the Principle of being a fiduciary to clients.
Describe a model or project you owned end to end, including a problem after it went live.
Why BlackRock, and why Aladdin?
Tell me about a time you worked across teams to deliver a result.
Practice problem: portfolio volatility and risk contributions
pythonAn RQA risk manager wants to know which positions drive a portfolio's risk. Write risk_contributions(weights, vols, corr) that builds the covariance matrix cov[i][j] = vols[i] x vols[j] x corr[i][j], computes portfolio volatility sqrt(w' cov w), and returns (vol, shares), where shares[i] = w[i] x (cov w)[i] / variance, the fraction of variance from position i. Round vol and each share to 4 decimals. Raise ValueError if the lengths differ, the correlation matrix is not symmetric with ones on the diagonal, or the portfolio variance is not positive. Example: weights [0.6, 0.4], vols [0.2, 0.1] and correlation 0.3 give variance 0.01888 and return (0.1374, [0.839, 0.161]).
