The short answer: Meta does not post a Site Reliability Engineer title. Its SRE-type role is the Production Engineer, which Meta's postings describe as a specialized software engineer who keeps services reliable and scalable and shares on-call. Meta says its process has a recruiter conversation, an initial screening and a full loop, and typically takes about 2 to 3 months. Candidate reports describe a screen with separate coding and troubleshooting interviews, then a loop of coding, system design, Linux and systems internals, and behavioral rounds. Meta says no outside AI tools are authorized and only the tools inside the interview environment may be used. Last reviewed October 2026.

A Week in the Life of a Meta Site Reliability Engineer
Illustrative week · Meta
An illustrative week for a site reliability engineer, built from what Meta says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary by team.
Culture notes
- PEs are software engineers first. Meta's postings say they write and review code and own systems end to end.
- On-call is shared with the team, and PEs act as an escalation contact for incidents.
- PE postings ask candidates to use AI tools to ship code and list agent orchestration among preferred skills.
Key takeaway: Expect to own services in code and on-call, from capacity plans to debugging live production at Meta scale.

Meta site reliability engineer interview process
Meta publishes one hiring process for all roles and no Production Engineer interview guide, so the steps follow its hiring process page. The content of each PE round comes from candidate reports: one detailed 2025 report and a 2024 thread.
6 rounds·~8 to 12 weeks end to end
Screen
3 roundsRecruiter call
Meta says the recruiter asks about your background, experience, goals and interest, and explains the role and team.
Tips for this round
- Ask whether your interviews use Meta's built-in AI assistant, since the FAQ does not say for PE roles.
- Ask which team you would join and whether the loop has a troubleshooting or a systems internals round.
Technical screen: coding
A 2025 candidate got a file-parsing problem (CSV) and an easy string problem. A 2024 candidate reported two medium software engineering style problems.
Technical screen: troubleshooting
A 2025 candidate was told a website was down and asked to find out why, with details changing along the way; the root cause was a full disk. A 2024 candidate said the round felt hard without Linux and kernel experience.
Onsite
4 roundsFull loop: coding
The 2025 candidate got another file-parsing problem, with many follow-ups on optimization and extensions.
Tips for this round
- Write a working parser first, then handle optimization and extension follow-ups.
- Talk through memory use when the file is larger than RAM.
Full loop: system design
The 2025 candidate described a standard PE design question and felt the answer needed more depth. Meta's FAQ says that where AI-native interviews apply, design interviews run in the shared coding environment with diagrams written in Mermaid Markdown.
Full loop: Linux and systems internals
The 2025 candidate was asked about memory management, processes, file systems, security basics and basic networking. A 2024 thread asks whether candidates get a troubleshooting round or a systems internals round, so the mix may vary.
Full loop: behavioral
The 2025 candidate was asked about past experience, collaboration, conflict resolution and technical leadership.
Tips to Stand Out
- Review the prep information from your recruiter and your Career Profile, which Meta says includes a practice session in the interview tool.
- Check your computer and Wi-Fi before the interview and protect the time slot, as Meta suggests.
- Research your interviewers to anticipate the questions they may ask, which Meta recommends.
- If your interview uses the built-in AI assistant, practice with AI coding tools and get comfortable reading, debugging and building on existing code, as Meta advises for AI-native interviews.
- Prepare questions for your recruiter on team dynamics, role specifics and next steps.
- Candidate reports say to practice Linux troubleshooting hands-on, since the troubleshooting screen is hard without it.
Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass
- ✗One 2025 candidate rated the system design round as the weakest for lack of depth on PE-specific design.
- ✗One 2024 candidate found the troubleshooting round hard without prior Linux experience.
Based on Meta's own pages and candidate reports.
Meta says the typical process takes about 2 to 3 months, and one 2025 candidate reported about three months from December to March. Only one detailed full-loop report was readable, so treat the round list as a likely shape and confirm it with your recruiter. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Meta
- The title is Production Engineer. Meta posts no Site Reliability Engineer title, and its PE postings describe specialized software engineers who write and review code, own back-end services and debug live production. Network Production Engineer is a separate network track, and Production Systems Engineer roles are data center and hardware fleet jobs.
- PEs sit inside product and core infrastructure teams. Meta names Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus and Videos, and core services such as Storage, Cache and Networking, including some of the world's largest MySQL deployments. Production engineering is listed under Meta's Infrastructure organization.
- On-call is shared. Postings say PEs share an on-call rotation with their team and act as an escalation contact for service incidents. They also write capacity plans and documentation alongside code.
- The screen includes troubleshooting. Two candidate reports describe a dedicated troubleshooting interview next to coding in the screen, and the coding questions in reports lean toward practical file parsing.
- AI shows up in the job and in the rules. PE postings list prompt and context engineering, agent orchestration and using AI tools to ship code as preferred skills. For interviews, Meta says no outside AI tools are authorized and only the tools inside the interview environment may be used.

Troubleshooting practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Meta's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Users say a Meta web property is down. You have shell access to the web tier. Walk through how you find the cause.
Sample Answer
Start by confirming the symptom: is it all users or one region, and what error do they see? Check DNS with dig, then whether the load balancer can reach backends and what its health checks say. On a backend host, check the web server process, its error log, memory and disk. Run df -h and df -i, since a full disk or exhausted inodes stop logging and temp files. A strong answer mitigates first (drain bad hosts, free space) and then fixes the cause, such as log rotation.
df says a disk is 100 percent full, but du across all directories adds up to half of that. What is going on?
Replication lag on a MySQL replica serving a busy product grows steadily through the afternoon. What do you check?
After a deploy, the cache hit rate for a service drops from 95 to 70 percent and the database starts timing out. Walk through it.
Reliability design practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Meta's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Plan capacity for a photo upload service: 20,000 uploads per second at peak, 500 KB average, three stored copies, and average traffic at half of peak.
Sample Answer
Peak ingest is 20,000 x 500 KB = 10 GB/s, or 80 Gbps. If each front-end host can use 5 Gbps of a 10 Gbps link with headroom, you need 16 hosts at peak, plus spares and room to lose one site. Average traffic of 10,000 uploads per second stores 10,000 x 0.5 MB x 86,400 s = 432 TB of new photos a day, about 1.3 PB with three copies. A strong answer adds tiering of older photos to cheaper storage and a plan for a regional failure.
A live event will triple traffic to a video service in 48 hours. Today it runs on 200 hosts at 60 percent CPU at peak. What do you do?
A service takes 400,000 requests per second, split evenly across two data centers. Design it so either data center can fail.
Design a safe rollout for a change to a back-end service that runs on 10,000 hosts.
Fundamentals practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Meta's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
What happens when a Linux machine runs out of memory?
Sample Answer
The kernel first reclaims page cache and, if swap is on, swaps out anonymous memory. If it still cannot satisfy allocations, the OOM killer picks a process by its oom_score, which grows with memory use and can be adjusted with oom_score_adj, and kills it. Check dmesg for OOM killer messages. A strong answer explains why free memory looks low on a healthy box (page cache) and how cgroup limits trigger OOM kills inside a container.
What is a zombie process, and how do you get rid of zombies?
What is an inode, and how can a disk be full while df -h shows free space?
Why does a busy proxy end up with thousands of sockets in TIME_WAIT, and is that a problem?
Behavioral practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Meta's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Tell me about a production incident where you were the escalation contact.
Sample Answer
Meta's PEs act as an escalation contact for incidents. Describe the symptom, how you were pulled in, what you checked and in what order, how you mitigated and what code or process change followed.
Describe a conflict with another engineer or team about a technical decision.
Tell me about a time you led a technical change without being the manager.
Tell me about someone you mentored and what changed for them.
Practice problem: find disks that will fill up soon
pythonA monitoring job exports disk samples as CSV with the header host,mount,timestamp,used_gb,size_gb, where timestamp is in seconds. Rows may be out of order, and some are malformed (missing fields, non-numeric values, empty host or mount, size_gb of 0 or less, or negative used_gb); skip those. For each (host, mount), take the earliest and the latest sample, compute the growth rate in GB per hour, and project the hours left until used_gb reaches the latest size_gb. Write disks_filling(csv_text, hours) that returns a list of (host, mount, hours_left) for mounts that will fill within hours hours, with hours_left rounded to 1 decimal, sorted by hours_left, then host, then mount. A mount whose latest sample is already full is returned with 0.0. Mounts with one sample that are not full, or with zero or negative growth, are never returned. Example: web1,/var at 50 GB of 100 at time 0 and 60 GB at time 3600 grows 10 GB per hour and fills in 4.0 hours, so disks_filling(csv, 6) includes ("web1", "/var", 4.0).
1from typing import List, Tuple
2
3def disks_filling(csv_text: str, hours: float) -> List[Tuple[str, str, float]]:
4 """Return (host, mount, hours_left) for mounts projected to fill within `hours`."""
5 pass700+ coding problems with a live code executor.
Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Meta loop, most important first:
- Practice Linux troubleshooting on a real machine: fill a disk, exhaust inodes, leak a file descriptor, then find each with standard tools.
- Practice practical coding: parse CSV and log files in Python, handle bad rows, and extend the solution when the interviewer adds requirements.
- Review systems internals: memory management and the OOM killer, processes and signals, file systems and inodes, permissions and TCP basics.
- Prepare PE-style designs with numbers: capacity plans, failover between data centers, caching in front of MySQL and safe rollouts.
- Write behavioral stories on collaboration, conflict, technical leadership and an incident where you were the escalation contact.
- Ask your recruiter which rounds your loop has and whether it uses the built-in AI assistant, and use the practice session in your Career Profile.
