Roblox software engineer interview: quick answers
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| How many interview rounds? | Roblox's 2022 article lists a recruiter call, a skills exercise, Meet the Team (usually two rounds, sometimes a single onsite) and a creative problem-solving and values round. A candidate guide describes an onsite of 2 coding, 1 to 2 system design and 1 to 3 behavioral rounds of about an hour each. |
| What do the rounds test? | According to Roblox, the skills exercise checks fundamental technical skills, Meet the Team covers past projects, problem solving, creativity and critical thinking, and the creative round is about how you structure an open-ended problem. Coding or design whiteboarding depends on level and team. |
| Can I use AI tools? | Roblox does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews; ask your recruiter. One candidate guide says AI use is not allowed, but no Roblox page we found says so. |
| What is the creative problem-solving round? | An open-ended, deliberately non-technical problem where you explore the constraints with your interviewer. Roblox says it cares more about your thought process and collaboration than a correct answer. |
| How long does it take? | Roblox told candidates in 2022 to allow at least two weeks, and said the recruiter can speed the process up or spread it out. A candidate guide reports 6 to 8 weeks for mid and senior roles. |
| Do new grads interview differently? | Yes. Roblox says entry-level and intern candidates take a simulation-based assessment played as a 3D experience on Roblox. The early-career posting says new grads are matched to a team after the interviews by talking with engineering managers. |

A Week in the Life of a Roblox Software Engineer
Illustrative mid-level week · Roblox
An illustrative week for a mid-level engineer, built from practices Roblox describes in its own publications and job postings. Real weeks vary a lot by team.
Culture notes
- Releases are guarded by automation. Client code ships weekly with progressive rollout and automatic rollback, and server deploys pass automated canary analysis.
- Monitoring comes by default. Standard alerts on latency, traffic, errors and saturation cover more than 1,500 microservices.
- AI tools learn the team's habits. Roblox trained its coding assistants on past review comments, and about half of its engineers use them.
Key takeaway: Expect weekly releases behind canaries and rollbacks, with tests, reviews and on-call shared across the team.

Roblox postings never state a level, so the rows below use posting titles. The job board shows Software Engineer, Senior, Principal and Distinguished Engineer, with no Staff title, and Senior and Principal each appear in two pay bands. Level codes such as IC1 to IC6 come only from third-party salary data, and Roblox has not confirmed them.
Pay in Roblox's US job postings
Roblox's San Mateo postings print a starting base pay range and say all full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation. They do not mention a bonus.

Postings never state a level, so rows use posting titles. Senior and Principal each appear in two bands: the same team posts the upper Senior band with 7+ years and the lower one with 3+. The early-career posting gives one figure, $153,000, not a range. Ranges seen October 27, 2026.
Roblox software engineer interview process
The steps below follow Roblox's own interview article from February 2022 and its early-career posting. Stage names may have changed since 2022. Lengths and the onsite round mix come from candidate reports and are labeled that way.
4 to 6 rounds·~2 to 8 weeks end to end
Screen
2 roundsRecruiter intro call (Getting to Know You)
Your background, your interest in Roblox and your career goals, plus an overview of the company from Talent Acquisition.
Tips for this round
- Have a short answer ready on why Roblox and where you want your career to go.
- Ask whether your skills exercise will be coding, system design or a take-home.
Demonstrate Your Skills
Fundamental technical skills. Roblox says higher-level roles may get a system design exercise or a role-relevant take-home instead of coding.
Take-home
1 roundGame-based assessment (early career)
Entry-level and intern candidates play a simulation-based cognitive assessment built as a 3D experience on Roblox. Roblox says it scores how you approach the scenario using data on your decisions. Candidate reports add coding problems in the same multi-part assessment.
Tips for this round
- Take the practice assessments on the prep portal linked from the early-career posting.
- Roblox scores how you approach the scenario, so play it deliberately.
- Candidate reports say the coding part follows, so budget your energy for a long session.
Onsite
2 roundsMeet the Team
Past projects, problem-solving approach, creativity and critical thinking, with future teammates, the hiring manager and at least one senior leader. Coding or design whiteboarding depends on level and team. A candidate guide describes 2 coding, 1 to 2 system design and 1 to 3 behavioral rounds.
Tips for this round
- Prepare a deep dive on your most impressive project and be ready to defend every line of your resume.
- Treat the senior leader conversation as seriously as the coding rounds.
- Talk through your approach out loud; Roblox looks at creativity and critical thinking.
Creative problem-solving and values interview
An open-ended, explicitly non-technical problem where you explore constraints with the interviewer. Roblox says it looks at how you structure ambiguity and your thought process more than a correct answer. A candidate guide says it is sometimes called a bar raiser.
Decision
2 roundsHiring committee review
A packet with your resume, a hiring manager summary and interviewer feedback goes to a committee of senior engineering leaders, who make the final decision.
Tips for this round
- The committee reads every interviewer's feedback, so a weak round is hard to offset.
- Your recruiter can speed the process up or spread it out if you ask.
Team matching (early career)
New grads chat with engineering managers across groups such as Infra, Engine, Search and Discovery, Foundational AI and Economy, then join a team.
Tips to Stand Out
- Ask clarifying questions and talk through how you handle complex or ambiguous situations, as Roblox advises.
- Be ready to discuss what motivates you, where you made a difference and what you are proud of, technical or not.
- Show initiative, grit and drive. Roblox's CTO is quoted wanting long-term thinkers who reason from first principles.
- In the creative round, explore the constraints with your interviewer. Roblox cares more about your thought process and collaboration than a correct answer.
- Early-career candidates can use the prep portal linked from the posting, with practice assessments, interview guides and modules.
- Roblox says all candidates are judged by the same standards, with work to remove bias.
Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass
- ✗Candidate guides say treating the senior leader round casually, or not being ready to defend every resume line and explain your best project, hurts.
- ✗Candidate guides say code that is correct but not clean or tested counts against you.
- ✗Candidate guides say weak alignment between your resume and the specific role leads to rejection.
- ✗New-grad candidate reports describe rejections after passing parts of the long online assessment, followed by medium-to-hard technical rounds.
Based on Roblox's own pages and candidate reports.
Roblox told candidates in 2022 to allow at least two weeks, with the recruiter able to speed things up or spread them out; a candidate guide reports 6 to 8 weeks for mid and senior roles. The final call rests with a hiring committee of senior engineering leaders. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Roblox
- A non-technical round. Roblox's loop includes a creative problem-solving and values interview with an open-ended problem, where your reasoning and collaboration count more than the answer.
- The early-career assessment is a game. Entry-level and intern candidates play a simulation built as a 3D experience on Roblox, scored on how they approach the scenario.
- Senior leaders take part. Roblox says you meet at least one senior leader in Meet the Team, and a committee of senior engineering leaders makes the final call.
- New grads pick a team after the interviews. The early-career posting says you talk with engineering managers across groups such as Engine, Infra and Economy before you are placed.
- The stack runs lower than a typical web company. Many engine and client roles ask for C++ and systems work on mobile, desktop, console and VR, and infrastructure roles write mostly Go.
- Three office days. Office-based roles are onsite Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with Monday and Friday optional.

System design practice

Design a shared caching layer in front of many backend services for a platform with millions of concurrent players.
Sample Answer
Clarify the read-to-write ratio, value sizes, how stale a read may be and which services share the cache. Roblox describes a Redis-based caching layer fronted by Envoy, so a proxy tier that routes keys to sharded cache nodes is a fair starting point. Use consistent hashing so adding a node moves few keys, and protect the database from stampedes when a hot key expires (request coalescing or early refresh). Discuss hot keys that one shard cannot serve, replication for failover, and what happens to the backend if a cache shard dies. Give numbers for queries per second, memory per node and the hit rate you need, and avoid letting every service talk to Redis directly.
Design the release pipeline for a client app that ships a new binary every week to desktop, mobile and console.
Design a service that detects and blocks account takeover attempts at login.
Design Saves and Collections: let users save experiences and items into named collections across web, mobile and console.
Design an analytics pipeline that ingests about 2 trillion events a day from clients and servers.
Fundamentals practice
Concept questions on the topics Roblox's rounds lean on, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.
What are the four golden signals, and why alert on them by default?
Sample Answer
Latency, traffic, errors and saturation. Together they show whether a service is slow, busy, failing or near its limits. Roblox says default alerts on these cover more than 1,500 microservices without custom code, which means every new service is watched from day one. Measure latency as percentiles and separate the latency of failed requests from successful ones.
How does automated canary analysis decide whether to stop a deploy?
What is RAII in C++, and why does it matter for engine code on mobile and console?
How does consistent hashing help a cache cluster?
Behavioral practice
Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral rounds. They are not reported interview questions.
Tell me about a time you took on a problem nobody had asked you to solve.
Sample Answer
Roblox says it looks for initiative. Explain what you noticed, why it mattered, what you did without being told and what changed as a result.
Describe a project that kept failing before it worked.
Tell me about a decision where you accepted a short-term cost for a long-term gain.
Walk me through a problem where you reasoned from first principles because the usual approach did not fit.
What are you most proud of, technical or not?
Practice problem: peak players per experience
pythonYou get play sessions as (experience, start, end), where a player is in the experience from start up to but not including end. Sessions with end <= start are ignored. For each experience with at least one valid session, return (experience, peak, time), where peak is the largest number of players present at once and time is the earliest moment that peak is reached. A player who leaves at t and one who joins at t are never counted together. Return the tuples sorted by experience name. Example: [('obby', 0, 10), ('obby', 5, 15), ('obby', 10, 20), ('tycoon', 3, 4)] returns [('obby', 2, 5), ('tycoon', 1, 3)]. At time 10 one player leaves as another joins, so obby stays at 2, and the peak was first reached at 5.

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Roblox loop, most important first:
- Practice medium coding problems and write clean, tested code. Candidate guides say correct but untested code counts against you.
- Prepare for the creative problem-solving round by working through open-ended, non-technical problems out loud and asking about constraints first.
- Build a deep dive on your most impressive project and be ready to defend every resume line for the senior leader conversation.
- For mid-level and senior roles, practice system design on caching, release safety and high-volume services; ask whether you will get a design exercise or a take-home.
- Write stories about initiative, grit, long-term decisions and work you are proud of, technical or not.
- For early-career roles, take the practice assessments linked from the posting and read about the teams you could match with.
