Technical Program Manager Interview Prep

The short answer: Technical program managers run programs that cross many engineering teams, and they are expected to understand the systems well enough to argue trade-offs with engineers. Interviews test both halves: how you plan, track and rescue programs, and how deep your technical judgment goes, usually through system design. Meta and Amazon publish TPM-specific interview guides with five onsite interviews each. Google publishes only its company-wide process, so its round names come from candidate guides, and candidate reports disagree on how much coding a Google TPM loop includes. Ask your recruiter for your exact rounds. Last reviewed October 2026.

Technical Program Manager interview: quick answers

QuestionShort answer
What does a technical program manager do?Leads multi-team engineering programs from requirements to launch: scope, schedules, dependencies, risks and status, plus technical trade-off discussions with engineers.
What do the interviews test?Program management, system design, cross-functional partnership and behavioral stories. Meta adds a deep dive on a past program, and Amazon adds a writing assessment.
Can I use AI tools?Google says no. Meta counts AI tools as outside assistance unless it provides them. Amazon publishes no rule, so ask your recruiter.
How much do TPMs make?Posted US base ranges run from $127.1K for an Amazon TPM to $333K for a Google Senior Leadership TPM. Meta's postings list $160K to $272K.
How is a TPM different from a program manager? The difference is the technical bar. Amazon's Program Manager competencies list no technical depth, while its TPM loop requires a systems design question. A candidate guide says Google's Program Manager loops skip the technical judgment rounds.
Is there an entry-level path?Meta posts TPM internships in Reality Labs, and Amazon posts TPM internships in Europe. We found no Google TPM internship.

What technical program managers do

Google's postings describe TPMs who lead complex, multi-disciplinary engineering projects through the full lifecycle, take part in architecture reviews and brief executives. Many US openings sit in infrastructure and AI: data center capacity, the TPU software stack and Gemini post-training at Google DeepMind. Some postings ask for technical judgment equivalent to a practicing software engineer in the domain.

Meta's TPM guide says TPMs are not crisis managers, technical consultants or communication facilitators. They dive deep into system design and architecture and act as subject matter experts. Product TPMs work across Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Reality Labs, and infrastructure TPMs run capacity planning for compute, storage, GPU and network capacity.

Amazon describes TPMs as the glue across several teams: the technical side is finding dependencies and technical risks, and the program side is scheduling, sprints, milestones and status reports. Its postings ask for software development experience, and Amazon separates the role from Product Manager - Technical and from Program Manager, each with its own interview.

The interview types in depth

Program management and program sense

This round asks how you run programs: how you turn an ambiguous goal into scope and milestones, get buy-in, prioritize, manage risk and communicate. Meta calls it Program Sense and names seven focus areas, from program complexity to communication. Amazon lists program management as a loop competency, and candidate guides say Google's loop has a program management round too.

A structure that works: the goal and why it mattered, the scope and owners, the plan and critical path, the biggest risk and what you did about it, how you tracked progress, and the measured result. Pick programs at the complexity your level calls for.

System design for TPMs

TPM design rounds look like engineering design rounds with more weight on requirements, dependencies and trade-offs. Meta's Solution Design starts with product clarity (users, requirements, KPIs) before architecture. Amazon requires at least one software systems design question and expects specific technology choices, an API sketch, a database choice, data flow and monitoring. At Google, candidate reports range from one system design round to coding rounds.

Start with the customer and the requirements, give rough scale numbers, then draw the main components, data model and APIs. Name the trade-offs as you make them and close with failure scenarios, metrics and the dependencies you would manage as the TPM.

Technical deep dive on a past program

Meta runs a Technical Retrospective: 45 minutes with an engineer on a past program where you had a technical role, ending with a production problem you troubleshot. Meta says there is no code or complex algorithms. Google's hiring manager screen, per candidate guides, and Amazon's technical questions also probe programs you ran.

Pick one program you know end to end. Reread its design documents, practice a two-minute system overview, and be ready to defend each major choice, such as build versus buy or SQL versus NoSQL.

Partnership and stakeholder management

TPMs lead people who do not report to them, so loops test influence. Meta's Partnership round is run by a cross-functional partner and covers collaboration, communication and pushing back with leaders. Amazon lists stakeholder and partner management as a loop competency.

Bring stories where you changed someone's mind with data, resolved a conflict between teams and pushed back on a leader. Show what you heard from the other side and what you changed because of it.

Behavioral and leadership

Every loop has behavioral questions. Meta's Behavioral round looks for five signals: resolving conflict, growing continuously, embracing ambiguity, driving results and communicating effectively. Amazon assesses its Leadership Principles in every interview. Google suggests STAR answers with measured impact.

Build a small library of stories (a launch, a slip, a conflict, an ambiguous start, a failure) and adapt them to each company's framework. Give the result as a number.

Writing

Amazon sends TPM candidates a writing assessment that is due 2 days before the loop and lists writing as a TPM competency. It publishes no prompt or length.

Practice short documents that lead with the answer: a status update on a slipping program, a proposal and a decision memo. Use numbers instead of adjectives.

Pay in US job postings

US salary ranges from each company's own postings for this role, seen October 29, 2026. They are base salary unless the company guide says the posting lists total salary. Each company guide has the postings and links.

CompanyTitles in the postingsPosted US pay range
GoogleTechnical Program Manager, Technical Program Manager II and III, Senior Technical Program Manager, Senior Leadership Technical Program Manager and Technical Program Manager Lead$138K to $333K
MetaTechnical Program Manager, often with a team name (for example Capacity Planning and Delivery, AI Infrastructure, ASIC or Ranking AI), and Technical Program Manager Intern$160K to $272K
AmazonTechnical Program Manager, Technical Program Manager III, Senior Technical Program Manager, Principal Technical Program Manager and Sr. Manager, Technical Program Manager$127.1K to $302.9K

Entry-level paths

  • Meta: Meta posts a 2027 Technical Program Manager Intern role in Reality Labs (Sunnyvale or Seattle) for final-year students, and a second 2027 TPM internship in Reality Labs Global Supply Management.
  • Amazon: Amazon posts 2027 Technical Program Manager Intern roles in Luxembourg and Madrid; we found no US TPM internship.
  • Google: We found no Google TPM internship; the lowest US tier we found, TPM II, asks for 2 years of program management.

AI tools in technical program manager interviews

Rules on AI differ by company, so ask your recruiter before every round.

Google. Google says AI tools are not permitted during interviews, and its tips page says the same of Google Search and AI.

Meta. Meta's TPM guide counts using AI tools as outside assistance unless they are provided by Meta, and its hiring FAQ says only the tools available within the interview environment may be used. The FAQ mentions an authorized AI assistant in some software engineering technical interviews but does not say whether TPM interviews use it.

Amazon. Amazon does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews. A March 2025 news report described internal Amazon guidance asking candidates not to use generative AI tools during interviews unless explicitly permitted. That is a press report, and Amazon has not published such a rule.

A 6-week prep plan

WhenFocus
Week 1Read your target company's TPM guide or prep page and its postings. Note the rounds, the AI rule and the domain of the team you are interviewing for.
Week 2Build your story library: six to eight programs with goals, risks, conflicts and measured results. Map each to the company's framework, such as Meta's signals or Amazon's Leadership Principles.
Week 3System design fundamentals: APIs, databases, caching, partitioning, queues and scaling estimates.
Week 4Practice two full design problems a week out loud, starting from requirements and ending with failure scenarios and dependencies.
Week 5Pick your deep-dive program, reread its design documents and rehearse the overview, the trade-offs and one production problem. Write two short status or decision documents.
Week 6Run two full mock loops with no AI help, then fix the weakest round.

Program management practice

One prompt per company, from the company guides. These are our prompts, not reported interview questions.

You are the TPM for a TPU software release that must support serving with both JAX and PyTorch. Five teams own the compiler, runtime, two framework integrations and benchmarks. How do you plan it?

MediumProgram Management

Sample Answer

Start with the goal and the exit criteria: which models must run, at what performance, by what date. Map the dependencies: both framework integrations need the runtime, and benchmarks need both. Build a milestone plan with the critical path marked and a buffer where the risk is highest. Set a weekly cadence with one owner per workstream and a single status view for leadership. A strong answer names the top risks (for example a compiler regression late in the cycle) and the contingency for each.

Design a service that tracks ML accelerator capacity across 40 data centers, with 500 racks each, and alerts when demand is about to exceed supply. Each rack reports a 200-byte status record every minute.

MediumSystem Design

Sample Answer

Scale first: 40 x 500 = 20,000 racks, so 20,000 / 60 = about 333 writes per second. Daily volume is 20,000 x 1,440 = 28.8 million records, or 28.8 million x 200 bytes = 5.76 GB a day, small enough for a time series store with a year of history. Components: collectors per data center, a durable queue, a time series store, a forecasting job that compares reserved demand with installed supply, and an alerting service. Discuss what happens when one data center stops reporting (alert on missing data as well as bad data) and who owns each alert.

Design live location sharing for WhatsApp groups: a user shares their location with a group for up to an hour. Assume 10 million active sharing sessions at peak, one update every 30 seconds, and 5 viewers per session on average.

MediumSystem Design

Sample Answer

Start with product clarity: who shares, who sees it, how it stops, and privacy controls. KPIs could be share starts and sessions ended by the user instead of by timeout. Scale: 10,000,000 / 30 = about 333,000 location writes per second, and with 5 viewers each, about 1.67 million deliveries per second. Keep only the latest location per session in memory with a time to live, since history is not needed, and push updates over the existing messaging connection. Cover end-to-end encryption, battery use and what viewers see when the sharer loses signal.

Technical retrospective practice

One prompt per company, from the company guides. These are our prompts, not reported interview questions.

Give the 2-minute system overview of a program you led, the way you would open a Technical Retrospective.

MediumSystem Design

Sample Answer

Name the problem and who it served, then the main components and how data flows between them, in plain terms. Point out the one or two components you will go deep on and why they mattered to the outcome. Stop at two minutes so the interviewer can steer, since Meta's suggested shape gives most of the time to the deep dive.

Ranking AI teams request 12,000 GPUs for the next half. Capacity planning can deliver 9,000. How do you run the decision?

MediumProgram Management

Sample Answer

The shortfall is 3,000 GPUs, 25% of demand (3,000 / 12,000). Get each request tied to its expected impact and its date, since some demand may be needed late in the half. Look at levers: efficiency work that frees capacity, shifting some training to off-peak, and moving delivery dates. Bring leadership a ranked list with what each team gets, what it loses and the risk of each option, and agree on a review point if supply changes. Communicate the outcome to every team with the reasoning.

Design the motion event pipeline for Ring doorbells. Assume 10 million doorbells, 20 motion events per doorbell per day, and a 2 MB video clip per event kept for 30 days.

MediumSystem Design

Sample Answer

Events are 10 million x 20 = 200 million a day, about 2,315 per second on average (200,000,000 / 86,400), so plan for peaks around 5 times that, about 11,600 per second. Clips are 200 million x 2 MB = 400 TB a day, and 30 days is 12 PB. Use direct uploads of clips to object storage with metadata in a key-value store keyed by device and time, a queue that triggers notifications, and lifecycle rules that delete clips after 30 days. Monitor upload failures and notification latency.

Write a one-page status update for leadership on a program that is two weeks behind.

MediumExecution

Sample Answer

Lead with the status and the new date. Then give the cause in one or two sentences, the impact on customers and dependent teams, the options considered and the one you recommend, and what you need from leadership. Use numbers instead of adjectives. Amazon publishes no format for its writing assessment, so practice short, structured documents like this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a technical program manager interview like?

Expect program management questions, at least one system design discussion, and behavioral and partnership questions. Meta adds a deep dive on a past program and Amazon adds a writing assessment. The mix depends on the company, so read its guide and ask your recruiter.

Do TPMs have to code in interviews?

It depends on the company. Amazon's prep video says TPMs do not need to code, and Meta says its Technical Retrospective has no code. For Google, candidate reports disagree: some describe no coding, others describe whiteboard coding rounds.

How much system design do TPM interviews include?

Meta runs a full Solution Design round with scale estimates, architecture, data model and APIs. Amazon requires at least one software systems design question. Google candidate guides describe a technical judgment round, often system design.

Can I use AI tools in TPM interviews?

Google does not permit AI tools. Meta counts AI tools as outside assistance unless it provides them. Amazon publishes no rule, so ask your recruiter.

How much do technical program managers make at Google, Meta and Amazon?

In US postings seen in October 2026, Google lists $138K to $333K base from TPM II to Senior Leadership TPM, Meta lists $160K to $272K, and Amazon lists $127.1K to $239.4K from TPM to Principal TPM, plus up to $302.9K for a Sr. Manager of TPMs. All three add bonus, equity or both.

How long does the TPM hiring process take?

Google says about 6 to 8 weeks once interviews start. Meta says about 2 to 3 months. Amazon says to expect a decision within 5 business days of the loop.

How is a TPM different from a technical product manager?

Amazon draws the line clearly: TPMs must design a system from ambiguous requirements and whiteboard it, while Product Managers - Technical need a conceptual grasp of the technology and own features, go-to-market and success metrics.
