Analytics Engineer Interview Prep

The short answer: Analytics engineers build the data models and metrics that sit between raw data and the people who make decisions with it. Interviews test SQL, data modeling, metric definitions and how you work with business partners, and some loops add a take-home. GitLab is the only one of the three that publishes its process for this exact role, including an AI rule for each stage. Spotify publishes a hiring process that covers every role, and Netflix publishes none, so most of what is known about their analytics engineer rounds comes from candidate guides and a single hire's account. Ask your recruiter for your exact rounds. Last reviewed October 2026.

Analytics Engineer interview: quick answers

QuestionShort answer
What does an analytics engineer do?Builds and owns the data models, metrics and pipelines that analysts and business teams use, usually in SQL and dbt, with tests and documentation.
What do the interviews test?SQL, data modeling, metric definitions, work with stakeholders, and behavioral stories. GitLab includes a take-home, and one Spotify hire's 2022 account describes one.
Can I use AI tools?GitLab sets a rule for each stage: cite AI on take-homes and do not read AI answers in interviews. Netflix and Spotify publish no rule, so ask your recruiter.
How much do analytics engineers make?Netflix's six Analytics Engineer 5 postings list $330K to $566K in salary. Spotify and GitLab had no open individual contributor posting on October 28, 2026.
How is it different from a data engineer?Analytics engineers own business logic and metrics. Netflix postings say data engineers build the upstream pipelines, and GitLab places analytics engineers between data analysts and data engineers.
Is there an entry-level path?GitLab's Associate level still asks for 1+ years in data. One account describes Spotify hiring a career switcher as an Associate Analytics Engineer. We found no Netflix analytics engineer intern posting.

What analytics engineers do

At Netflix, analytics engineers own source-of-truth data models, core metrics and the dashboards and data tools on top of them for one business team. The six postings open in October 2026 cover ad identity graphs, cloud games quality of experience, cloud and AI infrastructure cost, GenAI in media production, promotional media, and content and studio. Netflix splits the work: AEs own metrics and business logic, while data engineers own upstream pipelines and visualization engineers build executive-facing views.

At GitLab, analytics engineers extend the Enterprise Dimensional Model in dbt and serve as stable counterparts to business teams in four sub-teams: GTM, R&D, Finance and People. Every level asks for Kimball dimensional modeling and work with warehouses of 1B+ rows, and every change ships through a merge request.

At Spotify, analytics engineering is one of the disciplines in Product Insights, next to data science and user research. A past posting tied the role to a mission (Podcast Mission Insights) and described owning its data stack: pipelines, unit tests, alerting and migrations, with dbt on Google BigQuery.

The interview types in depth

Live SQL

Most analytics engineer loops test SQL live. Candidate guides describe a 45 to 60 minute SQL screen at Netflix on joins, aggregations, window functions and performance trade-offs. Spotify says its technical interviews use a shared coding environment or an online whiteboard.

Interviewers watch whether you check the grain of each table before joining, handle nulls and duplicates, and explain your choices. A structure that works: restate the question, name the grain of the output, build the query in CTEs one step at a time, then test it against an edge case out loud.

Data modeling

You get a business area and design the tables behind it. Candidate guides describe a data modeling and metric design round at Netflix. GitLab asks for Kimball dimensional modeling at every level and publishes its four steps: business process, grain, dimensions, facts.

Start from the questions the business asks, then fix the grain, then list dimensions and facts. Say how you handle history (slowly changing dimensions), how the model will be tested, and how marts for dashboards sit on top. Interviewers want to hear trade-offs, such as a daily snapshot against an event-level fact.

Metric definition and business cases

These rounds turn a vague request into a defined metric, or ask why a metric moved. Candidate guides describe metric validation and debugging a suspicious metric movement at Netflix, plus A/B test design for some teams. Netflix postings stress translating ambiguous asks into metrics.

Ask what decision the metric supports, then define it with exact rules: who counts, which events, which period and which time zone. When a metric moves, check the data pipeline first, then split by segment to find where the change is concentrated.

Take-home assignments

GitLab's job family includes a take-home, and its Data team says it represents the team's regular work. One 2022 account by a Spotify analytics engineer hire describes a take-home as well. No source mentions one for Netflix.

Treat a take-home as production work: clear models, tests, and a short written note on your grain, assumptions and what you would do with more time. Expect to walk through it in a later interview, and check the company's AI rule before you start.

Stakeholder and business partner interviews

Analytics engineers work closely with the business, and some loops test that directly. GitLab includes interviews with Business Partners from the teams you would support. Candidate guides describe a hiring manager round at Netflix on stakeholder partnership and metric thinking.

Explain your work in business terms: the decision it changed, the number it moved and how you handled disagreement over a definition. Avoid jargon, and show you can say no to a request while keeping the relationship.

Behavioral and values

Every loop has behavioral questions tied to the company's culture. Candidate guides describe rounds on the Netflix culture memo. Spotify says it looks for values alignment, ownership, adaptability, collaboration and drive. GitLab's interviewer guide asks for STAR answers with measured results.

Prepare a small set of stories: a pipeline that broke and what you changed, a metric definition dispute, a vague ask you turned into a metric, and a model other teams came to rely on.

Pay in US job postings

US salary ranges from each company's own postings for this role, seen October 29, 2026. They are base salary unless the company guide says the posting lists total salary. Each company guide has the postings and links.

CompanyTitles in the postingsPosted US pay range
NetflixAnalytics Engineer 5, followed by a team name (for example Analytics Engineer 5 - Ads Identity & Signals)$330K to $566K
SpotifyAnalytics Engineer (recent titles also include Associate Analytics Engineer, Analytics Engineer II and Senior Analytics Engineer)Not published in US postings
GitLabAssociate Analytics Engineer, Analytics Engineer (Intermediate), Senior, Staff and Principal Analytics EngineerNot published in US postings

Entry-level paths

  • GitLab: Associate Analytics Engineer is the entry level but asks for 1+ years in data; the Data Team Internship for Learning is only for existing GitLab team members.
  • Spotify: The summer internship lists no data or analytics engineering track; one account describes a career switcher hired as an Associate Analytics Engineer.
  • Netflix: A search of Netflix's job site on October 28, 2026 found no analytics engineering intern posting, and open AE postings ask for 5+ years.

AI tools in analytics engineer interviews

Rules on AI differ by company, so ask your recruiter before every round.

GitLab. GitLab publishes a rule for each stage. You may use AI on your resume if it stays accurate. On take-home assignments you may research with AI, but you must cite it and answer in your own words. In technical assessments, open AI use is welcome if you can explain your prompts and decisions. In interviews, GitLab asks you not to read from AI-produced answers. You are asked to disclose any AI use and the tools, and GitLab says it does not use AI to make hiring decisions.

Netflix. Netflix does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews. A July 2026 news report says Netflix lets candidates use AI tools while coding in technical interviews, but that report is not on a Netflix page and is not about analytics engineering. Netflix postings do expect AI use on the job, such as working with coding and analytics agents and checking their output.

Spotify. Spotify does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews. Its AI Notice covers only Spotify's own recruiting tools: AI helps recruiters organize and evaluate candidate information, and people make all hiring decisions.

A 6-week prep plan

WhenFocus
Week 1Read your target company's guide and postings. Note its title for the role, its teams, its AI rule and which rounds are official and which come from candidate reports.
Week 2SQL every day: joins at the right grain, deduplication, window functions, rolling metrics and incremental logic, written out loud.
Week 3Data modeling: two business areas a week with grain, dimensions, facts, history handling and tests.
Week 4Metrics: define five metrics with exact rules, and practice debugging a metric that moved overnight.
Week 5Build a small dbt project with tests and documentation, and do one timed take-home under the company's AI rule.
Week 6Behavioral stories and mock loops: a broken pipeline, a definition dispute, a vague ask, then two full practice loops.

Practice questions

Questions from our bank, then practice prompts from the company guides.

Questions from our bank

From the DataInterview question bank, picked for analytics engineer interviews. Open one to answer it.

SQL practice

One prompt per company, from the company guides. These are our prompts, not reported interview questions.

Table cloud_game_sessions has session_id, title_id, session_date and avg_latency_ms. Write a query for the daily share of sessions above 100 ms per title, plus a 7-day rolling share.

MediumSQL

Sample Answer

First aggregate to one row per title and day: COUNT(*) as sessions and SUM(CASE WHEN avg_latency_ms > 100 THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) as slow_sessions. The daily share is slow_sessions / sessions. For the rolling share, sum both columns over a window of the current row and 6 preceding rows, partitioned by title and ordered by date, then divide. Averaging the 7 daily shares would weight a quiet day the same as a busy one. Mention that missing days break a ROWS window, so join to a date spine or use a RANGE window on dates.

Data modeling practice

One prompt per company, from the company guides. These are our prompts, not reported interview questions.

Design a source-of-truth model for promotional artwork performance: which artwork members saw and whether they played the title.

MediumData Modeling

Sample Answer

Start with the questions: take rate by artwork, title, country and device over time. Make the fact one row per artwork impression, with keys for member profile, title, artwork, device and date, plus a flag or later timestamp for a play within a set window. Keep dimensions for title, artwork (type, version, whether it was generated or edited) and date. Define take rate once in the model so every dashboard uses the same rule. Add tests for duplicate impressions and for plays without an impression.

Metrics practice

One prompt per company, from the company guides. These are our prompts, not reported interview questions.

A media production team starts using a GenAI tool to create assets. How would you measure whether it is working?

MediumBusiness Sense

Sample Answer

Ask what the team wants: faster delivery, lower cost, more variants or better quality. Pick a primary metric such as time from request to approved asset, compared with similar assets made without the tool. Add adoption (share of eligible assets made with the tool) and quality guardrails such as the share of outputs accepted without rework. Watch for selection bias, since teams may use the tool on easier assets first. Report by asset type so a strong average does not hide a weak area.

Behavioral practice

Prompts we wrote for analytics engineer behavioral rounds, with what a strong answer covers.

Tell me about a metric definition that two teams disagreed on.

MediumBehavioral

Sample Answer

Explain each side's reason, the data you brought, how the decision was made and where the final definition was written down. Show that both teams kept using the metric afterward.

Company guides

Read the guide for each company you are interviewing with:

  • Netflix: Netflix posts Analytics Engineer 5 roles, all remote in the US at $330K to $566K. It publishes no loop, so the SQL, modeling and culture rounds come from candidate guides.
  • Spotify: Spotify publishes a company-wide process of recruiter, team and final rounds. One 2022 account by an analytics engineer hire adds two technical screenings and a take-home.
  • GitLab: GitLab publishes its analytics engineer job family: five levels, a hiring process with a take-home and Business Partner interviews, and an AI rule for each stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an analytics engineer interview like?

Expect SQL, data modeling, metric definition and behavioral rounds, often with a stakeholder or hiring manager conversation. Some companies add a take-home. GitLab publishes its steps for the role, while Netflix and Spotify details come mostly from candidate guides and one hire's account.

How is an analytics engineer different from a data engineer or data analyst?

Analytics engineers own the business logic: data models, metric definitions and the tested tables analysts use. Netflix postings say data engineers own upstream pipelines, and GitLab places analytics engineers between data analysts and data engineers in separate job families.

Do analytics engineer interviews include a take-home?

Sometimes. GitLab's job family includes one that its Data team says mirrors the team's regular work. One 2022 Spotify account describes one. No source mentions a take-home for Netflix.

Can I use AI tools in analytics engineer interviews?

GitLab lets you research with AI on take-homes if you cite it, welcomes open AI use in technical assessments, and asks you not to read AI answers in interviews. Netflix and Spotify publish no rule, so ask your recruiter.

How much do analytics engineers make at Netflix, Spotify and GitLab?

Netflix's six Analytics Engineer 5 postings seen in October 2026 list $330K to $566K, paid as salary with an option to take part as stock options. Spotify and GitLab had no open individual contributor analytics engineer posting on October 28, 2026.

Do I need to know dbt?

It helps. GitLab calls the role specialized in dbt, a past Spotify posting asked for expert dbt, and Netflix lists dbt as a bonus. Every company here expects strong SQL.

Are analytics engineer roles remote?

At these three, mostly yes. All six Netflix postings are Remote, United States, GitLab is all-remote, and Spotify says most roles are Work From Anywhere within a region or time zone.
