Business Intelligence Engineer Interview Prep

The short answer: Business intelligence engineers build the data models, metrics and dashboards that a business runs on. At Microsoft and Apple the work is real but the title is rare: neither had an open posting titled Business Intelligence Engineer on October 28, 2026. Microsoft posts the work as Business Analytics Specialist and Senior Data Analyst, and Apple as Data Products & Business Intelligence Lead and Sr Analytics Engineer. Neither company publishes a BI interview loop. Microsoft publishes its general hiring process, and the rest of what we know comes from candidate guides written about data analyst interviews at each company. Amazon is the largest employer using the Business Intelligence Engineer title, and it has its own guide. Last reviewed October 2026.

Business Intelligence Engineer interview: quick answers

QuestionShort answer
What does a BI engineer do?Builds the models, metrics and dashboards that leaders use. At Microsoft that means Power BI and Fabric semantic models and executive scorecards; at Apple, privacy-first data products and canonical dashboards.
What do the interviews test?Neither company publishes a BI loop. Candidate guides on data analyst interviews describe SQL screens with window functions and CTEs, a case study or team panel, stakeholder questions and behavioral rounds.
Can I use AI tools?Microsoft says to show your own skills without outside assistance unless explicitly permitted. Apple publishes no rule; ask your recruiter.
How much do BI engineers make?Posted US base ranges run from $106.4K for Microsoft's IC4 analytics roles (US typical) to $324.8K for Apple's Data Products & BI Lead.
Is the title Business Intelligence Engineer? Not at these two in October 2026. A Microsoft Senior BI Engineer posting from June 2026 has closed, and Apple posted a Senior BI Engineer in July 2025 that has also closed. Current work sits under analytics and data product titles.
How is it different from a data analyst? In the postings here, BI work centers on building semantic models, metric layers and dashboards that many people use. Analyst work centers on answering questions with analysis and statistics. Microsoft's Senior Data Analyst does both.

What business intelligence engineers do

At Microsoft, the Business Analytics Specialist in the SME&C organization owns BI experiences, executive scorecards and Power BI and Fabric semantic models for the Corporate Accounts business. About 40% of the role is semantic models, data architecture and AI readiness, so that Copilot and agents can use the models. The Senior Data Analyst in the Office of the Chief Economist owns shared metrics and semantic models and adds statistics and impact evaluation.

At Apple, the Data Products & Business Intelligence Lead in Wallet, Payments & Commerce builds analytical data products from instrumentation specs to last-mile datasets, held to Apple's privacy and design bar. The Sr Analytics Engineer in Retail Data Products builds canonical dashboards and conversational data tools for Retail Operations. Apple's past Business Intelligence Developer was mostly front-end work on a BI team's metrics website.

Amazon is the largest employer using the Business Intelligence Engineer title, and it has its own guide, linked below with the Microsoft and Apple guides.

How 2 companies run the business intelligence engineer interview

The short version of each process. Each company guide has the full detail, with links to the company's own pages, and says which parts come from candidate reports.

CompanyScreensMain interviewsAI toolsWhat stands out
MicrosoftRecruiter screen and SQL technical assessment (candidate reports)Usually 2 to 4 conversations, up to an hour eachNot without explicit permissionPower BI and Fabric semantic models; no open BI engineer title
AppleLive SQL screen, sometimes two (candidate reports)Stakeholder, team panel, hiring manager and skip-level (candidate reports)No published rulePrivacy-first data products; past BI Developer was front-end

The interview types in depth

SQL and technical screen

This is the round most likely to end a loop early. Neither company publishes it. Candidate reports for Microsoft data analyst roles describe a technical assessment of about 60 minutes on SQL (joins, subqueries, window functions and CTEs), Python, statistics and BI tools. A candidate guide for Apple describes live SQL sessions of about 60 minutes on CTEs, window functions and filtering, sometimes twice.

A structure that works: restate the question, name the grain of the answer, write the query in CTE steps, then check it for duplicates, nulls and edge cases such as missing days. Talk while you write.

Data modeling and semantic layers

Neither company describes a modeling round, but every BI posting here asks for it. Microsoft asks for dimensional modeling, star schemas and semantic layer design in Power BI with DAX. Apple asks for dimensional modeling, semantic or metrics layers and metric standardization.

Start with the questions the dashboard answers, set the grain of the fact table, add dimensions and define each metric once. Then say how the model stays fast as data grows and how it keeps history when attributes change.

Metrics, dashboards and business cases

Expect a business question with data behind it. Candidate reports for Microsoft data analyst roles describe a case study round with a subject matter expert. The Apple candidate guide describes a team panel with team-specific domain questions and practical problem solving.

Clarify the decision behind the question, pick a few metrics tied to it, and explain what drives them. When a metric moves, check the data first, then split by segment and separate mix from rate before you recommend anything.

Stakeholder round

BI engineers serve many teams, so expect questions on working with them. The Apple candidate guide describes a round with a cross-functional partner, sometimes in another time zone, on business context and conflict. Microsoft says its loops include cross-functional colleagues as well as potential teammates.

Bring a story about a request you pushed back on, one about a metric several teams had to agree on, and one about working across locations. Show what the other side needed and what you delivered.

Behavioral and hiring manager

Microsoft says interviewers assess respect, integrity, accountability and growth mindset. The Apple candidate guide says the hiring manager and skip-level ask about decisions under ambiguity and calls made with limited data.

BI stories that work: a dashboard that changed a decision, a wrong number you found and fixed, a metric definition you got teams to share, and a call you made before the data was complete.

Pay in US job postings

US salary ranges from each company's own postings for this role, seen October 29, 2026. They are base salary unless the company guide says the posting lists total salary. Each company guide has the postings and links.

CompanyTitles in the postingsPosted US pay range
MicrosoftBusiness Analytics Specialist and Senior Data Analyst (no open Business Intelligence Engineer title)$106.4K to $222.6K
AppleData Products & Business Intelligence Lead and Sr Analytics Engineer (no open Business Intelligence Engineer title; past BI Developer and Senior BI Engineer postings)$120.9K to $324.8K

Entry-level paths

  • Apple: Apple offers summer internships and academic-year co-ops in which interns work as full team contributors; its students page does not name BI or analytics internships.

AI tools in business intelligence engineer interviews

Rules on AI differ by company, so ask your recruiter before every round.

Microsoft. Microsoft says: "We encourage candidates to use AI tools responsibly and ethically during preparation, as long as it reflects their true capabilities. During assessments and interviews, candidates should demonstrate their own skills without outside assistance unless explicitly permitted."

Apple. Apple does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews; ask your recruiter.

A 6-week prep plan

WhenFocus
Week 1Read your target company's postings and guide. Note the real title, the team, the BI stack and the AI rule, and ask your recruiter which rounds to expect.
Week 2SQL: joins, subqueries, window functions and CTEs on reporting questions, timed, out loud.
Week 3Data modeling: star schemas, slowly changing dimensions and one definition per metric in a semantic layer.
Week 4Dashboards and metrics: design a dashboard for a named audience and practice explaining why a metric moved.
Week 5Statistics for BI: whether a change is real or noise, mix shifts, and simple impact evaluations.
Week 6Stakeholder and behavioral stories, then two mock rounds: one live SQL session and one case.

Practice questions

Questions from our bank, then practice prompts from the company guides.

Questions from our bank

From the DataInterview question bank, picked for business intelligence engineer interviews. Open one to answer it.

SQL practice

One prompt per company, from the company guides. These are our prompts, not reported interview questions.

A table azure_usage(account_id, segment, usage_date, revenue) holds daily Azure consumption for Corporate Accounts customers. Write a query for monthly revenue per account with the change from the previous month.

MediumSQL

Sample Answer

Aggregate first in a CTE: account_id, DATE_TRUNC to the month, and SUM(revenue). Then use LAG(revenue) OVER (PARTITION BY account_id ORDER BY month) to get the previous month and subtract. Say how you treat an account with no usage in a month: LAG skips the gap, so build a calendar of months and LEFT JOIN to it if a missing month should count as zero.

Practice more questions

Data modeling practice

One prompt per company, from the company guides. These are our prompts, not reported interview questions.

Design the Power BI semantic model behind an executive scorecard for Corporate Accounts revenue.

MediumData Modeling

Sample Answer

Set the grain of the fact table first, for example one row per account per day of consumption. Add dimensions for date, account, segment, product and region in a star schema with single-direction relationships. Define measures such as revenue, month-over-month growth and accounts active once in DAX, so every report uses the same logic. Add a date table marked as such so time intelligence works.

Practice more questions

Metrics and dashboards practice

One prompt per company, from the company guides. These are our prompts, not reported interview questions.

Revenue on the Corporate Accounts scorecard fell 8% month over month. How do you find out why?

MediumBusiness Sense

Sample Answer

Confirm the data first: refresh status, late data and any definition change. Then split the change by segment, region, product and new versus existing accounts to see where it concentrates. Separate volume from price or usage per account. Check calendar effects such as fewer business days. End with the two or three drivers, how sure you are, and what the business should do.

Practice more questions

Behavioral practice

Prompts we wrote for business intelligence engineer behavioral rounds, with what a strong answer covers.

Tell me about a dashboard that changed a decision.

MediumBehavioral

Sample Answer

Name the decision and who made it, what the dashboard showed, how you made it trusted, and what changed as a result, in numbers if you can.

Company guides

Read the guide for each company you are interviewing with:

  • Microsoft: Microsoft had no open Business Intelligence Engineer posting in October 2026. The BI work sits in Business Analytics Specialist and Senior Data Analyst roles built on Power BI and Fabric.
  • Apple: Apple had no open Business Intelligence Engineer posting in October 2026. BI work sits in Wallet and Retail data product roles, and the loop is known from one candidate guide.
  • Amazon: the Amazon business intelligence engineer interview.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a BI engineer interview like?

Neither Microsoft nor Apple publishes a BI loop. Microsoft's general process is an application review, sometimes a short screen, then usually 2 to 4 conversations. Candidate guides on data analyst interviews add SQL screens, a case study or team panel, stakeholder questions and hiring manager rounds.

Do Microsoft and Apple hire Business Intelligence Engineers?

Apple has posted BI Developer and Senior BI Engineer roles, but neither company had an open posting with the title on October 28, 2026. Microsoft posts the work as Business Analytics Specialist and Senior Data Analyst. Apple posts it as Data Products & Business Intelligence Lead and Sr Analytics Engineer.

Can I use AI tools in BI engineer interviews?

Microsoft says candidates should demonstrate their own skills without outside assistance unless explicitly permitted. Apple publishes no rule, so ask your recruiter.

How much do BI engineers make at Microsoft and Apple?

In US postings seen in October 2026, Microsoft lists $106.4K to $222.6K base for its IC4 Business Analytics Specialist and Senior Data Analyst roles. Apple lists $120.9K to $249K for the Sr Analytics Engineer and $216.2K to $324.8K for the Data Products & BI Lead.

Which BI tools should I know?

Microsoft's postings center on Power BI, Microsoft Fabric and DAX. Apple's ask for Tableau, Power BI or Looker, with Snowflake or PySpark, Airflow and dbt, and semantic layers such as Cube, dbt or LookML.

How reliable are the candidate reports?

They are thin. For each company we found one usable candidate guide, and both were written about data analyst interviews, not BI engineers. Use them as a guide to what may come up, and confirm the rounds with your recruiter.

Is a BI engineer the same as an analytics engineer?

The titles overlap. Apple's Retail team posts its BI work as Sr Analytics Engineer and asks for a dashboarding background. Both build models and pipelines for reporting; BI titles usually own more of the dashboards that business users see.
