The short answer: Citadel and Citadel Securities run one engineering interview process. Citadel's careers pages (archived copy, September 2026) describe a first-round technical interview, a second round of usually three 45-minute interviews, then leadership interviews with any team that wants to hire you. Its early-career NXT guide (archived copy, October 2025) adds a recruiter call and an online assessment you may be asked to take. Citadel says the process typically takes about eight weeks. It publishes no rule on AI use in interviews. Last reviewed October 2026.

A Week in the Life of a Citadel Software Engineer
Illustrative mid-level week · Citadel
An illustrative week for a mid-level engineer, built from practices Citadel describes in its own publications and job postings. Real weeks vary a lot by team.
Culture notes
- Engineers sit in small teams with quant researchers and investment professionals, not in a separate support function.
- Engineers rarely get a spec: a trader describes a problem, and engineers clarify it and build the solution.
- Citadel Securities describes a flat structure with little bureaucracy, and engineers own their code in production.
Key takeaway: Expect short cycles from a trader's problem to production code, and to support what you ship.

Citadel does not publish an engineering ladder. Postings use titles such as Software Engineer - University Graduate, Software Engineer and Senior Options Software Engineer, and say a recruiter maps experienced hires to a role, team and region by seniority. The rows below use those titles.
Pay in Citadel's US job postings
Citadel and Citadel Securities postings print a base salary range and say the role is eligible for a discretionary incentive compensation program. The live postings could not be opened, so each row links to an archived copy of the posting.
| Posting | Location | US base salary range |
|---|---|---|
| Citadel: Software Engineer - University Graduate (US) | New York, Miami, Greenwich, Houston | $235K to $300K |

The postings state no levels, so rows use posting titles and the years of experience they ask for. The university graduate range sits at or above the top of the experienced Citadel band, so ranges do not map neatly to seniority. Some postings also list London, Singapore or Sydney; the table shows the US cities. Reliability and test engineering postings are left out. These ranges come from archived copies of Citadel's postings between August 2026 and September 2026 and may not match current openings.

4 to 6 rounds·~About 8 weeks end to end
Screen
3 roundsRecruiter conversation
A recruiter explains Citadel and its engineering roles, and you talk about your background and motivation. The NXT guide (archived copy, October 2025) lists this step; the campus guide does not.
Tips for this round
- Have a specific answer on why Citadel and why finance.
- Ask whether your track includes the online assessment.
Online assessment
The NXT guide says you may be asked to take it: multiple-choice and true/false technical questions plus one coding question in any language. Candidate guides describe 2 or 3 hard problems graded on hidden tests and call it the main filter.
First-round technical interview
Coding, data structures, algorithms and problem solving, with questions on your approach, your technical interests and why Citadel.
Onsite
2 roundsSecond round
Technical and behavioral skills. The NXT guide adds system design topics. Citadel says it follows up within two weeks.
Tips for this round
- Push past a working solution to the optimal one on follow-ups.
- For design, state latency and correctness targets first.
- Prepare stories on business impact and fast-paced work.
Leadership interviews and team matching
Hiring managers at Citadel and Citadel Securities review your feedback. Any interested team interviews you on team fit and achievements, and may add a role-specific technical problem.
Tips to Stand Out
- Take time to understand the problem and ask clarifying questions before coding. Citadel says defining the problem is as important as solving it.
- Share your thought process, discuss trade-offs between approaches and be clear about what you do and do not know.
- If you hit a setback, say so and take hints. Citadel says interviewers want to iterate with you, and the questions are not tricks.
- Read Citadel's mission and values, and prepare examples of how your past work drove business outcomes.
- Practice coding in a shared online editor over video before the first round, in Python, C++ or Java.
- Do not share confidential information about your current or past employer. Citadel says it wants to learn about you.
Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass
- ✗Candidate guides say correct but suboptimal solutions often fail the online assessment's hidden tests, and partial credit rarely helps.
- ✗Candidate guides cite stopping at a working solution instead of pushing to optimal complexity on follow-ups.
- ✗For infrastructure and low-latency roles, candidate guides cite weak knowledge of cache behavior, concurrency primitives and C++ internals.
- ✗Candidate guides say a vague answer on why Citadel, or why finance over big tech, counts against you.
- ✗Candidate guides say system designs that ignore latency and correctness miss the trading focus.
Based on Citadel's own pages and candidate reports.
Citadel says the whole process typically takes about eight weeks. Because team matching comes last, a strong candidate may have several leadership interviews before choosing a team. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Citadel
- One loop for two firms. Citadel (the hedge fund) and Citadel Securities (the market maker) both send interviewers, and either firm's teams can ask for you afterward, according to Citadel's careers pages (archived copy, September 2026).
- Team matching comes last. The first and second rounds are a general assessment, and interested hiring managers then run their own leadership interviews.
- Commercial impact is a hiring criterion. Citadel asks how your past work drove business outcomes, and its engineering FAQ (archived copy, February 2026) asks for a commercial mindset.
- Probability counts even for engineers. Citadel's engineering FAQ lists familiarity with probability and statistics among the traits of strong candidates.
- Trading-flavored design. Candidate guides say system design rounds center on trading problems such as a real-time order book or a market-data normalizer, with C++ and concurrent design questions for low-latency roles.
- A hard online assessment. Candidate guides call it the main filter and say correct but slow solutions often fail the hidden tests. Citadel's NXT guide says only that you may be asked to take one.

System design practice
Practice prompts we wrote around Citadel's products. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline of what a strong answer covers.
Design a market data normalizer that takes feeds from many exchanges and publishes one consistent format to trading systems.
Sample Answer
Clarify how many venues, message rates at peak and the latency budget. Run one handler per feed that parses the venue format, checks sequence numbers and maps symbols to internal ids, then publishes normalized updates on an internal bus. Detect gaps, mark affected books stale, and recover from snapshots. Discuss avoiding allocation and locks on the hot path, and keeping one slow consumer from slowing the rest. Citadel says systems are built for multiples of current volume, so size for peak bursts with headroom.
Design a real-time risk system that aggregates positions and exposure across many trading desks.
Design a system that runs trading simulations across tens of thousands of compute cores.
Design a trading blotter in the browser that shows live orders and fills for hundreds of traders.
Design an order handling path for a market maker that must stay correct at several times today's peak volume.
Fundamentals practice
Concept questions on the topics Citadel's rounds lean on, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.
Why can iterating over an array be much faster than iterating over a linked list with the same number of elements?
Sample Answer
Arrays store elements next to each other, so each cache line the CPU loads brings in several useful elements and the prefetcher can predict the next ones. Linked list nodes are scattered in memory, so each step can be a cache miss costing far more than the arithmetic. Both are O(n), but the constant factor differs a lot, which matters in low-latency code.
What is the difference between a mutex and a lock-free queue, and when would you pick each?
In C++, what does move semantics save you, and when does a move still cost something?
A fair coin is flipped until it shows heads. What is the expected number of flips?
Behavioral practice
Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral rounds. They are not reported interview questions.
Tell me about a project where your engineering work changed a business result.
Sample Answer
Citadel asks how your past work drove business outcomes. Name the metric, your part in moving it and how you measured the change.
Describe a time you built something from a vague request with no written spec.
Tell me about a system you owned in production that failed at a bad time.
Describe a time you had to learn a new area quickly to deliver.
Why Citadel, and why finance over a technology company?
Practice problem: top of book from order messages
pythonYou process a stream of order messages for one instrument. ("A", id, side, price, qty) adds an order, where side is "B" for a bid or "S" for an ask. ("C", id) cancels whatever remains of an order. ("E", id, qty) executes qty shares against an order; if that uses up the order, it is removed. Ignore messages for unknown or finished orders. After each message, record (best bid, best ask): the highest bid price and the lowest ask price with shares remaining, or None for an empty side. Example: [('A', 1, 'B', 100, 5), ('A', 2, 'S', 103, 2), ('A', 3, 'B', 101, 1), ('E', 3, 1), ('C', 1)] returns [(100, None), (100, 103), (101, 103), (100, 103), (None, 103)].

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Citadel loop, most important first:
- Practice medium and hard data structures and algorithms problems under time pressure, and keep pushing each one to optimal complexity, since candidate guides say slow solutions fail the online assessment.
- Pick Python, C++ or Java, practice in a plain shared editor over video, and review C++ memory, concurrency and cache behavior if you are aiming at low-latency roles.
- Practice trading-flavored system design, such as a market data handler or an order book, and state latency and correctness targets up front.
- Prepare stories on how your work drove business outcomes, and a specific answer on why Citadel and why finance.
- Brush up on basic probability and statistics, which Citadel lists among the traits of strong candidates.
- Ask your recruiter which firm and track you are interviewing for, whether the online assessment applies, and whether AI tools are allowed in any round.
