The short answer: PayPal's careers page describes three steps: a recruiter screen, interviews with team members, and then next steps with your recruiter, including a background check. PayPal currently interviews virtually on Microsoft Teams and prefers cameras on. Everything else comes from candidate reports, which describe an online coding assessment, a live coding screen and a loop of 4 to 5 rounds covering coding, system design, low-level design and behavioral questions. PayPal does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews. Last reviewed October 2026.

A Week in the Life of a PayPal Software Engineer
Illustrative mid-level week · PayPal
An illustrative week for a mid-level engineer, built from practices PayPal describes in its own publications and job postings. Real weeks vary a lot by team.
Culture notes
- Most employees follow a balanced hybrid model: 3 days in the office and 2 days at the office or at home.
- Engineers at every level take part in code and design reviews, and staff engineers write architecture decision records for cross-system designs.
- PayPal expects engineers to use AI tools for coding, testing, debugging and documentation, and internal agent skills go through automated checks and human approval.
Key takeaway: Expect reviewed code, written design decisions, delivery against committed timelines and on-call ownership of the services you build.

PayPal software engineer interview process
PayPal's interviewing page names the recruiter screen, the team interviews and the offer steps. The online assessment, the live coding screen and the round mix below come from candidate reports only.
4 to 5 rounds
Screen
3 roundsRecruiter phone screen
PayPal says a recruiter discusses the role and your experience and, if there is a fit, sets up interviews with the team.
Tips for this round
- Be ready to walk through your experience against the job description.
- Ask the recruiter which screens come next and whether AI tools are allowed.
Online coding assessment (candidate-reported)
Candidate reports describe an online coding assessment with 2 to 3 easy to medium data structures and algorithms problems. PayPal's own pages do not mention it.
Live coding screen (candidate-reported)
Candidate reports describe a live coding screen, run either by an outside interview partner or by a PayPal engineer, judged on clean code and complexity.
Onsite
3 roundsTeam interviews: coding
PayPal says you meet team members and that it sends their names and focus areas in advance when possible. Candidate reports describe one or more coding rounds on data structures and algorithms.
Tips for this round
- Ask clarifying questions first; PayPal lists this among its interview tips.
- Test your code on edge cases out loud.
Team interviews: system design and low-level design (candidate-reported)
Candidate reports describe a system design round with a payments flavor (idempotency, retries and data integrity) and a low-level design round. PayPal's postings list object-oriented design, design patterns and multi-threaded programming as preferred skills.
Team interviews: behavioral and hiring manager
PayPal frames behavioral questions around competencies, its company values and its Leadership Principles. One candidate guide says senior roles may add a leadership assessment on mentoring and leading projects.
Tips to Stand Out
- Review PayPal's company values and Leadership Principles, study the job description and prepare your own questions.
- Give a specific, detailed example for each competency, use different examples across roles, and be honest.
- Ask clarifying questions during the interview and speak clearly.
- Test your camera, mic and connection in Microsoft Teams, use Edge or Chrome, and join a few minutes early from a quiet, well-lit spot.
- Brush up on algorithms and data structures, object-oriented design, design patterns and multi-threaded programming, which postings list as preferred skills.
- PayPal never asks applicants for passwords, one-time passcodes or fees, and all contact comes from official PayPal email domains.
Based on PayPal's own pages and candidate reports.
PayPal gives no timeline beyond saying the process takes some time. It describes no hiring committee or team-matching step, and every posting is tied to a specific team and requisition. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at PayPal
- Interviews run on Microsoft Teams. PayPal prefers cameras on, recommends Edge or Chrome, and asks you to test your camera, mic and connection and join a few minutes early.
- Behavioral rounds follow competencies. PayPal asks for specific, detailed examples for each competency, different examples across roles, and honesty, and points candidates to its values and Leadership Principles.
- Payments-style design. Candidate reports describe system design questions on idempotency, retries and data integrity, and more SQL than at many tech companies.
- Many open US roles sit in Venmo teams, including payments, identity, product and cloud infrastructure, so Venmo context is useful prep. Venmo Payments Engineering runs a platform serving 65 million active users.
- You cannot reapply to the same requisition after a rejection, but you can send questions or an updated resume through your recruiter.

System design practice
Practice prompts we wrote around PayPal's products. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline of what a strong answer covers.
Design Venmo person-to-person payments, where one user sends money to a friend from their balance or a linked card.
Sample Answer
Clarify payment sources, limits, how fast the receiver should see the money and the expected peak payments per second. Accept each payment with a client-generated idempotency key, run risk and limit checks, then move money in a double-entry ledger inside one database transaction. Charge external sources such as cards through a separate step with its own retries, and keep the payment in a pending state until it succeeds. Discuss how a timeout between the ledger and the card network is reconciled, how notifications are sent after commit, and why a balance column updated in place is not enough.
Design webhook delivery that tells merchants when their payments change state.
Design an API management platform that enforces authentication, rate limits and observability across PayPal's public APIs.
Design installment scheduling and collection for a Buy Now Pay Later product.
Design the login and session service for Venmo, including multi-factor authentication.
Fundamentals practice
Concept questions on the topics PayPal's rounds lean on, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.
Two threads update the same account balance at the same time. What can go wrong, and how do you prevent it?
Sample Answer
Both threads can read the same old balance and each write back their own result, so one update is lost. Prevent it with a lock around the read and write in one process, or in the database with a row lock (SELECT ... FOR UPDATE), an atomic update (balance = balance - x WHERE balance >= x) or optimistic concurrency with a version column.
How would you structure code that supports several payment methods, such as card, bank and balance, so new ones are easy to add?
What do database transaction isolation levels control, and which anomaly matters most for payments?
A call to a payment processor times out. Should you retry, and how?
Behavioral practice
Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral rounds. They are not reported interview questions.
Tell me about a time you delivered a project against a committed timeline when the scope changed.
Sample Answer
PayPal teams deliver against committed timelines. Explain what changed, what you traded off, how you told stakeholders and whether you hit the date.
Describe a production incident you helped resolve and the root cause analysis that followed.
Tell me about a design decision you wrote down and had to defend to other teams.
Describe a time you helped a junior engineer grow through code or design reviews.
Tell me about a mistake you made at work and what you did about it.
Practice problem: settle up a group of IOUs
pythonFriends record IOUs as tuples (debtor, creditor, amount_cents), meaning debtor owes creditor that many cents. Amounts are positive integers and debtor is never the same as creditor. Compute each person's net balance, then settle up with this greedy rule: while anyone still owes money, the person who owes the most pays the person who is owed the most, transferring the smaller of the two amounts. Break ties on amount by name in alphabetical order. Return the list of transfers as (payer, payee, amount_cents) in the order they are made. Example: [('ana', 'ben', 3000), ('ben', 'cal', 2000), ('cal', 'ana', 500)] gives net balances ana -2500, ben +1000 and cal +1500, so the result is [('ana', 'cal', 1500), ('ana', 'ben', 1000)].

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the PayPal loop, most important first:
- Practice easy to medium data structures and algorithms problems under time, since candidate reports describe an online coding assessment and a live coding screen.
- Practice payments system design: idempotency keys, retries with backoff, ledgers and reconciliation for flows such as Venmo payments and merchant webhooks.
- Review object-oriented design, design patterns and multi-threaded programming for the low-level design round, since postings list them as preferred skills.
- Prepare a distinct, specific story for each competency, tied to PayPal's values and Leadership Principles, and be honest about what you did.
- Brush up on SQL, which candidate reports say comes up more at PayPal than at many tech companies.
- Set up Microsoft Teams in Edge or Chrome, test your camera and mic, and ask your recruiter whether AI tools are allowed in any round.
