The short answer: Figma's early-career page describes a recruiter screen, a skill assessment for some roles, then a virtual onsite with technical and non-technical interviews. Figma says its coding interview is language-agnostic and focused on data structures and algorithms, and a Figma blog post describes design interviews on a shared FigJam board where you sketch an architecture and then write code for it. Candidate reports describe an onsite of about four to five hours for experienced hires: coding, two system design rounds, behavioral and a project deep dive. Figma sets your level from the interviews. Last reviewed October 2026.

A Week in the Life of a Figma Software Engineer
Illustrative mid-level week · Figma
An illustrative week for a mid-level engineer, built from practices Figma describes in its own publications and job postings. Real weeks vary a lot by team.
Culture notes
- Feedback comes early. Engineers share rough designs before code review, and engineering crits are optional sessions for that feedback.
- Big decisions have an owner. Formal reviews cover cross-team or high-stakes work, and a directly responsible individual makes the call.
- Reviews are blameless. Every project gets a retrospective, and incident and bug reviews focus on solutions.
- Weekly tech talks, onboarding mentorship and Maker Week are long-standing traditions.
Key takeaway: Expect a week of sharing rough designs early, silent crits in FigJam and blameless reviews.

Figma software engineer interview process
Figma's early-career page gives the official steps, and a Figma blog post describes the design interview on a FigJam board. The hiring manager call, project deep dive, executive screen and reference check come from candidate reports.
5 to 9 rounds·~3 to 4 weeks end to end
Screen
3 roundsRecruiter screen
A recruiter learns about your background and skills, your interest in Figma and what you want next.
Tips for this round
- Have a specific answer to why Figma, tied to a product you use.
- Ask which teams are hiring, since specific openings are discussed during the process.
Hiring manager call (experienced hires)
Behavioral questions about your experience plus an overview of the team's work.
Technical screen or skill assessment
Figma says some roles need an assessment. Candidates describe language-agnostic algorithm problems of medium difficulty, framed around Figma-like problems.
Onsite
5 roundsOnsite: coding
Figma says the coding interview is language-agnostic and covers data structures and algorithms. Candidates say prompts are product-shaped, such as a layered document with properties or ordering objects on a canvas.
Tips for this round
- Talk through edge cases, worst-case behavior and data-structure trade-offs.
- Model the product cleanly first, such as layers with properties and an order.
Onsite: system design (often two rounds)
Figma's blog describes sketching an architecture with the interviewer, then writing the code for it on the same board. Candidates report one round on Figma components and one tailored to the role.
Onsite: behavioral
Figma says early-career candidates walk through their background with a potential mentor or manager. Candidate reports describe questions on feedback, conflict and projects you are proud of.
Onsite: project deep dive (experienced hires)
Walk through a past technical project: your scope, the technical details, problems, trade-offs and what you would change.
Executive screen (Staff)
A behavioral round that probes areas the onsite did not cover, sometimes given to senior candidates on the edge of Staff.
Tips to Stand Out
- Code in the language you know best; Figma says its coding interview is language-agnostic and focused on data structures and algorithms.
- Treat the design round as a working session; Figma wants to see how you would collaborate with its engineers on an architecture.
- Practice sketching an architecture and writing code on a FigJam board, since Figma has candidates do both on the same board.
- Prepare examples for the four engineering values Figma builds into its interviews: communicate early and often, lift your team, craftsmanship, and prioritize impact.
- Share your direction before you go deep and take feedback seriously, which is what Figma means by communicating early and often.
- Keep your camera on in every video interview; Figma requires it.
Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass
- ✗A candidate guide says Figma weighs culture heavily and that a weak, generic answer to 'Why Figma?' hurts.
- ✗A candidate guide says coding interviewers probe edge cases, worst-case behavior and data-structure trade-offs, so skipping them is a common miss.
- ✗Candidate reports say not knowing how Figma components work is a risk, since one design round centers on them.
Based on Figma's own pages and candidate reports.
Figma's blog says interviewers pull up your FigJam file in the debrief to cite specific moments from the session, and its postings say your level is set from the interviews. Candidate reports put the whole process at three to four weeks. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Figma
- Design happens on a shared board. A 2021 Figma blog post says candidates diagram an architecture in FigJam, then write the code in a FigJam code block, and interviewers reuse the file in the debrief. Candidate reports from 2026 say design rounds still run in Figma.
- Product-shaped prompts. Candidate reports describe coding and design questions built around layered documents, canvas object ordering, Figma components and many concurrent users.
- A project deep dive with slides. Experienced candidates report presenting a past project, and one candidate guide calls it among the most heavily weighted rounds.
- One band, level set in the loop. Every US software engineer posting shares one broad base band, Figma sets your level from the interviews, and specific team openings are discussed during the process.
- Engineering values are scored. Figma says communicate early and often, lift your team, craftsmanship, and prioritize impact are built into its interviews.
- Posting rules. Figma requires cameras on in all video interviews, allows at most five applications in a rolling 30 days, and makes you wait 90 days to reapply to the same role after a rejection.

System design practice
Practice prompts we wrote around Figma's products. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline of what a strong answer covers.
Design real-time multiplayer editing for a design file that dozens of people edit at once.
Sample Answer
Clarify file size, editors per file, latency targets and offline editing. Keep one authoritative server process per open file that holds the document in memory, receives edits over a persistent connection and broadcasts them to every client. Resolve conflicts per object property with last-writer-wins ordered by the server, which is simpler than full text merging and fits a tree of objects with properties. Discuss reparenting conflicts (two users move objects into each other), checkpointing the document to storage, and how a reconnecting client catches up. A strong answer gives numbers for edits per second per file and memory per open file.
Design how component libraries publish updates to the files that use their components.
Design version history for design files, with named versions and restore.
Design search across a team's files so people can find frames and layers by name or by what they look like.
Design the CI system for a large monorepo used by thousands of engineers.
Fundamentals practice
Concept questions on the topics Figma's rounds lean on, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.
How can two people edit the same object at once without corrupting it?
Sample Answer
Treat each property of each object as its own register. When two edits hit the same property, a server-assigned order decides which one wins (last-writer-wins), and both clients converge on that value. Edits to different properties both survive. This is simpler than merging text character by character, which needs operational transforms or CRDTs.
Why compile C++ to WebAssembly for an editor that runs in the browser?
How do you find the topmost object under a mouse click on a canvas with thousands of layers?
How does a build cache know it can skip a step?
Behavioral practice
Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral rounds. They are not reported interview questions.
Tell me about a time you shared a rough design early and changed it because of feedback.
Sample Answer
Figma's value 'communicate early and often' means sharing direction before code review and taking feedback seriously. Describe what you shared, the feedback, what changed and what it saved.
Describe how you helped a teammate grow.
Tell me about a detail you sweated that users noticed.
Describe a time you cut scope to ship something that mattered sooner.
Tell me about a bug or incident you caused. What happened next?
Practice problem: merge concurrent property edits
pythonIn a multiplayer design file, clients send edits as (timestamp, client_id, object_id, prop, value). For each (object_id, prop), the edit with the highest (timestamp, client_id) wins, comparing client ids as strings to break ties. A winning value of None means the property was cleared. Edits may arrive out of order. Return the final document as {object_id: {prop: value}}, leaving out cleared properties and objects with no properties left. Example: [(1, 'ann', 'rect1', 'fill', 'red'), (2, 'bob', 'rect1', 'fill', 'blue'), (2, 'ann', 'rect1', 'x', 10), (4, 'bob', 'text1', 'content', None), (3, 'ann', 'text1', 'content', 'Hi')] returns {'rect1': {'fill': 'blue', 'x': 10}}.

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Figma loop, most important first:
- Practice medium data structures and algorithms problems in the language you know best, and talk through edge cases, worst-case behavior and data-structure trade-offs.
- Practice two system designs on a FigJam board end to end, including writing code for one piece of each, since Figma runs design rounds that way.
- Learn the product: use Figma components, instances, FigJam and multiplayer editing so product-shaped prompts feel familiar.
- If you are an experienced hire, build a short slide deck on one past project that covers your scope, trade-offs and what you would change.
- Write stories for Figma's four engineering values and a specific answer to why Figma.
- Ask your recruiter which teams are hiring and whether AI tools are allowed in any round, and plan to keep your camera on.
