Google Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Guide

The short answer: Google's main forward deployed role is Forward Deployed Engineer, Generative AI, Google Cloud, posted at levels III and IV. Google publishes one hiring process for every role: an application, possible assessments, one or two recruiter calls, sometimes a small project, then a panel of interviews scored on a structured rubric. Google says AI tools are not permitted during interviews, and most US FDE postings say the interviews are in person in most instances. Candidate guides describe a Python coding round, an agentic and ML system design round and a Googleyness and behavioral round. They also say the FDE loop is new and can be as short as two interviews over two days. Last reviewed October 2026.

A Week in the Life of a Google Forward Deployed Engineer

Illustrative week · Google

An illustrative week for a forward deployed engineer, built from what Google says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary a lot by customer.

Culture notes

  • FDEs write and ship code inside the customer's environment. Google's postings contrast this with traditional advisory roles.
  • Field work feeds the product. FDEs turn repeated customer friction into reusable modules or feature requests for Google engineering.
  • Google says every candidate for a role is scored on the same structured rubric, with open-ended, role-related questions and no brainteasers.

Key takeaway: Expect to build production agents inside a customer's systems and to feed what you learn back to Google engineering.

Google forward deployed engineer levels and pay

Your level sets the bar you are interviewed against and the pay band of the offer.

Google Forward Deployed Engineer Levels

Each level has different expectations, compensation, and interview focus.

5+ yrs

What This Level Looks Like

Takes rapid prototypes to production-grade agentic workflows for strategic Google Cloud customers, tied to measurable ROI.

Interview Focus at This Level

Candidate guides describe Python coding, agentic system design and behavioral rounds; Google tags this level Mid.

Find your level

Practice with questions tailored to your target level.

Start Practicing

Google puts III, IV and V in FDE titles and tags III as Mid and IV as Advanced. FDE III asks for 5 years of software development and FDE IV for 8. Senior and Staff titles also appear, mostly outside the US. The table uses posting titles only.

Pay in Google's US job postings

Google's US FDE postings list a base salary range. Each pay line also lists a bonus target (15% at III, 20% at IV, 25% at V) plus equity.

Public Sector and Geo postings carry no level number. The Google Labs Senior title is tagged Mid and shares the III range. The internship, the 12-month DeepMind contract role and an internal YouTube operations role are left out. Ranges seen October 28, 2026.

Google forward deployed engineer interview process

Google publishes one hiring process for all roles, so the steps below follow its How we hire and interview tips pages. The content of the coding, design and behavioral rounds comes from candidate guides and one candidate experience.

Assessments

Online

Google describes a Google Hiring Assessment on workstyle and, for some roles, a role-related assessment such as a coding exercise. This is a Google-wide description, not an FDE-specific one.

generalcoding

Tips for this round

  • Ask your recruiter whether your FDE role uses an assessment, and what kind.
  • Treat the workstyle assessment honestly; it is the same for every Google role.

Optional project work

Small project, depending on role

Google says some roles ask for a case study, writing or code samples to see how you approach problems. No FDE candidate report confirms a take-home for this role.

general

Tips for this round

  • Google says some roles ask for a case study, writing or code samples. No FDE report confirms one, so ask.
  • If you get one, show how you approached the problem, since that is what Google says it looks for.

Onsite

Coding interview

Live coding in Python

Candidate guides describe data structures and algorithms problems with follow-ups on efficiency and edge cases. One guide cites a candidate who got up to three questions. Google's Sydney FDE postings say candidates must code in Python without IDE or AI assistance.

coding

Tips for this round

  • Practice in a plain editor with no autocomplete or AI, since Google bans AI tools and some postings say no IDE.
  • Expect follow-ups on efficiency and edge cases, and state the complexity before you are asked.
  • Candidate guides say you may get more than one problem, so keep a steady pace.

Tips to Stand Out

  • Build a library of examples that map your resume to the job posting, and practice telling them, as Google suggests.
  • Show impact with data. Google suggests the form "accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z".
  • Think out loud and state your assumptions. Google says interviewers weigh your thought process over the final answer.
  • Use STAR for behavioral answers and give specific examples instead of general habits.
  • Ask clarifying questions on open-ended prompts. Candidate reports say to cap clarification at about five minutes in system design.
  • Prepare stories on navigating ambiguity, working across teams, resolving conflict and leading without the title.

Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass

  • ✗Candidate reports describe spending too long clarifying an abstract system design prompt and running out of time before the design was done.

Based on Google's own pages and candidate reports.

Google says the process typically takes about 6 to 8 weeks once interviews start, and that reapplying for the same type of role usually means waiting at least a year. Candidate guides say round names, order and count vary for this new loop; one lists a collaborative vibe coding round as likely, and no second source confirms it. Last reviewed October 2026.

What is different at Google

  • FDEs write and ship the code. Google's postings contrast the role with traditional advisory roles: the FDE builds the integration layer between Google AI products and the customer's live systems, including APIs, legacy data silos and security perimeters.
  • The role has two jobs. Google describes white glove deployment for strategic accounts plus turning repeated field patterns into reusable modules or product feature requests for Google engineering.
  • Cloud FDEs sit in Google Cloud's Go-To-Market org. They deploy Gemini models and Vertex AI for strategic enterprise accounts and have access to DeepMind engineers and researchers.
  • There are several FDE teams. Google posts Cloud GenAI, Applied AI (conversational agents), Public Sector, Partner FDE (co-building with partners' own forward deployed teams) and Geo (Google Maps Platform) roles, plus DeepMind and Google Labs FDEs who focus on evals and model feedback. The State and Local Government posting requires US citizenship. The Forward Deployed Engineering Manager is a people manager, and Forward Deployed Creative and the Mandiant forward deployed consultants are not engineering FDE roles.
  • AI tools are not allowed. Google's hiring pages say AI tools are not permitted during interviews, and some Sydney FDE postings say you must code in Python without IDE or AI assistance.
  • Travel depends on the team. The Applied AI FDE IV posting says up to 30% travel to customer sites. The other US postings checked state no travel figure and are office-based at listed Google locations.

Google forward deployed engineer interview questions

Questions from our bank, then scoping, design, fundamentals and behavioral prompts we wrote for this guide around Google's products and customers.

Questions tagged Google

From the DataInterview question bank, where our team tags each question with the companies it fits. Open one to answer it and compare with the solution.

Customer scoping practice

Vague customer problems we wrote around Google's products, to scope into a first build. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline.

A retail customer on Google Cloud says: "We want Gemini to help our store associates." Scope the first build.

MediumDecomposition

Sample Answer

Ask who the associates are, what they do today when they are stuck (call a help desk, search a wiki), and which questions come up most. Ask where the answers live: product catalog, inventory system, policy documents. Cut scope to one high-volume task, such as checking stock and store policy for a product, in a handful of pilot stores. Ship a read-only agent first that answers from the catalog and policies with citations, and leave actions like placing orders for later. Measure deflected help desk calls, answer accuracy on a labeled set of real questions and associate adoption. A strong answer ties the pilot to the ROI number the customer cares about before writing code.

Practice more scoping questions

AI system design practice

Design prompts we wrote for Google's kind of customers. Each answer outlines what a strong design covers.

Design a multi-agent claims workflow on Vertex AI for an insurance customer whose policy data sits in a legacy system behind its security perimeter.

MediumSystem design

Sample Answer

Clarify which claims (auto, property), volume, and which steps the agent may do on its own versus suggest. Put an MCP server in front of each customer system (policy lookup, claims history, document store) so agents call narrow, audited tools instead of raw databases, and keep credentials inside the customer's network. Use an orchestrator agent that routes to an intake agent, a document extraction agent and a coverage check agent, with a human adjuster approving any payout. Build an eval set from past claims with known outcomes and track accuracy, latency and cost per claim. Roll out to one claim type first, in suggest-only mode, and widen once accuracy holds.

Practice more AI system design

Fundamentals practice

Concept questions on what Google's forward deployed engineers work with, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.

What is an MCP server, and why would an FDE build one for a customer system?

MediumFundamentals

Sample Answer

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way to expose tools and data to a model-driven agent. An MCP server wraps a system, such as a ticketing API, and offers a small set of named tools with typed inputs. Building one lets any compatible agent use that system without custom glue, and it gives one place to enforce authentication, rate limits and logging.

Review the FDE course

Behavioral practice

Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral and customer rounds. They are not reported interview questions.

Tell me about a time you had to deliver with unclear requirements.

MediumBehavioral

Sample Answer

Google says to be ready to discuss navigating ambiguity. Use STAR: the situation, what was unclear, the questions you asked, the assumption you chose to proceed with, and the result as measured by a number. Say what you would do differently.

Practice more behavioral questions

Practice problem: compare two agent eval runs

python

An FDE runs the same eval set against a baseline and a candidate agent version. Each result is (case_id, version, passed, latency_ms), in the order the runs finished, and a case may be re-run, in which case its latest result for that version counts. Write compare_runs(results, baseline, candidate) that returns a dict with: baseline_pass_rate and candidate_pass_rate (share of distinct cases that passed, rounded to 3 decimals, 0.0 if none), regressed (sorted case ids that passed on the baseline and failed on the candidate, among cases run on both), and candidate_p95_ms (nearest-rank 95th percentile over all candidate runs, including re-runs, or None). Results for other versions are ignored. Example: [("a", "v1", True, 100), ("b", "v1", True, 120), ("a", "v2", False, 90), ("b", "v2", True, 300)] with baseline "v1" and candidate "v2" gives pass rates 1.0 and 0.5, regressed ["a"] and candidate_p95_ms 300.

Python
1from typing import List, Tuple, Optional, Dict, Any
2
3def compare_runs(results: List[Tuple[str, str, bool, int]], baseline: str, candidate: str) -> Dict[str, Any]:
4 """Summarize a baseline and a candidate eval run and list regressed cases."""
5 pass

Practice in the Engine

How to prepare

A plan for the Google loop, most important first:

  1. Practice data structures and algorithms in Python in a plain editor with no autocomplete or AI, since Google bans AI tools and some postings say no IDE.
  2. Practice agentic and ML system design from deliberately vague prompts: clarify for about five minutes, then cover data flow, retrieval, orchestration, evals and deployment.
  3. Prepare two projects for the recruiter screen and beyond, one agentic or ML system and one classical engineering project, with clear numbers on impact.
  4. Build a library of STAR stories mapped to the posting's qualifications, with impact stated as X, as measured by Y, by doing Z.
  5. Get hands-on with Gemini, Vertex AI and an agent framework such as ADK, and build a small agent with an MCP tool and an eval set.
  6. Ask your recruiter how many interviews your loop has, which are in person, and whether your team uses an assessment or project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds is the Google forward deployed engineer interview?

Google publishes its general process only: an application, possible assessments, one or two recruiter calls, sometimes a small project, then a panel of interviews. Candidate guides describe a Python coding round, an agentic and ML system design round and a Googleyness and behavioral round, and say some candidates get as few as two interviews over two days. Confirm the count with your recruiter.

Can I use AI tools in a Google FDE interview?

No. Google's How we hire page says AI tools are not permitted during interviews, and its tips page says the same of Google Search and AI. Some Sydney FDE postings add that you must code in Python without IDE or AI assistance.

How much do Google forward deployed engineers make?

In US postings seen in October 2026, FDE III lists $174K to $252K base and FDE IV lists $207K to $300K. Public Sector FDE postings list $207K to $300K, Geo postings $152K to $221K, and Partner FDE V $262K to $364K. Each posting adds a bonus target (15% at III, 20% at IV, 25% at V) and equity.

What levels does Google hire FDEs at?

US postings name III, IV and V in the title. FDE III asks for 5 years of software development in Python or a similar language and FDE IV asks for 8. Senior and Staff titles appear mostly outside the US; the Google Labs Senior FDE asks for 5 years and is tagged Mid.

Do Google FDEs travel?

The Applied AI FDE IV posting says up to 30% travel and calls it a high-travel role at customer sites. Other US postings checked do not state a travel figure. Roles are office-based, and you pick a preferred location from the posting's list.

How is the Google FDE different from an advisory or consulting role?

Google's postings say the FDE codes, debugs and ships agentic solutions inside the customer's environment, unlike traditional advisory roles. The Geo FDE posting opens with standard Technical Solutions Consultant text, which suggests it sits in that job family. The Forward Deployed Engineering Manager role manages FDE teams and was seen only outside the US.

Which Google teams hire forward deployed engineers?

Google Cloud (GenAI, Applied AI, GenMedia and Partner FDE), Google Public Sector (state and local, federal civilian, national security, Department of War and higher education), Geo, Google Labs and Google DeepMind. The DeepMind Kaggle FDE is a 12-month fixed-term contract, and an FDE internship is posted for summer 2027.
