The short answer: Anthropic does not publish a forward deployed engineer interview loop. Its careers page says all interviews run over Google Meet and technical roles use live coding in Colab or in an online coding environment, and its candidate AI guidance says no AI assistance in live interviews or take-homes unless Anthropic says otherwise. Candidate guides describe a recruiter screen, a technical scenario screen about deploying Claude, a practical coding round, a customer conversation role play and a project deep dive. They place a Claude deployment design and a values interview in a virtual onsite of about 4 to 5 hours. No first-hand report of a full Anthropic FDE loop was found, so treat the round list as a guide. Last reviewed October 2026.

A Week in the Life of a Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer
Illustrative week · Anthropic
An illustrative week for a forward deployed engineer, built from what Anthropic says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary a lot by customer.
Culture notes
- Postings ask FDEs to champion Anthropic's mission in the field and list passion for safe, beneficial AI as a qualification.
- The FDE team is new. EU postings call hires founding FDEs, and the New York manager role is the first FDE Manager.
- Field work becomes shared assets: playbooks, starter repositories, integration templates and an internal knowledge base.
Key takeaway: Expect a week split between customer sites and building Claude agents and MCP servers, with what works written up for the next engagement.
Anthropic forward deployed engineer levels and pay
Your level sets the bar you are interviewed against and the pay band of the offer.
Anthropic Forward Deployed Engineer Levels
Each level has different expectations, compensation, and interview focus.
What This Level Looks Like
Embeds with strategic enterprise customers to build production applications on Claude; open postings are founding roles in London, Munich and Paris.
Interview Focus at This Level
Candidate guides describe practical coding, customer discovery and Claude deployment design, so expect to show production LLM work.
Find your level
Practice with questions tailored to your target level.
Anthropic does not publish an FDE level ladder. Postings say minimum years of experience correlate with internal job levels but do not name the levels, so the tables use posting titles.
Pay in Anthropic's US job postings
Anthropic's US postings list an annual salary range, which is base pay for non-sales roles. The pay sections do not mention a bonus or equity.
| Posting | Location | US base salary range |
|---|---|---|

No US posting with the plain Forward Deployed Engineer title was open in October 2026, and the Munich and Paris postings show no pay. Applied AI Engineer rows are included as the closest US customer-facing coding role; the FDE manager posting is left out. Ranges seen October 28, 2026.
Anthropic forward deployed engineer interview process
Anthropic publishes only its general hiring facts, so the stages below combine its careers page and candidate AI guidance with candidate guides. Those guides supply all of the round detail, may draw on each other, and sometimes disagree.
7 to 8 rounds·~4 to 6 weeks end to end
Screen
3 roundsRecruiter screen
Candidate guides say it covers your background, why you want a customer-facing deployment role, level fit and which Claude models you have built with. Anthropic does not describe this call for the FDE role.
Tips for this round
- Have a concrete reason for wanting customer-facing deployment work, backed by an example.
- Be ready to name the Claude models you have built with and what you built.
- Ask which rounds your pipeline uses and what the AI rule is for each.
Technical scenario screen
Candidate guides describe a scenario about deploying Claude with MCP tooling, including how you manage long context and its unreliability. One guide says you may be given Claude in this round, which fits the official rule that AI is allowed only when Anthropic says so.
Coding round
Anthropic says technical roles use live coding in Colab or in an online coding environment, and that you can look things up. Candidate guides describe practical Python (TypeScript possible) in stages that each add requirements. Example tasks they name include a token-budget allocator, a tool-use orchestrator, a rate or quota limiter and a retry queue refactor.
Take-home
1 roundTake-home build (reported in some pipelines)
One candidate guide describes a small Claude-powered app built against a customer brief and judged on shipped behavior, API hygiene and handling ambiguous requirements. A candidate for Applied AI Engineer in Tokyo confirms a take-home stage but gives no details. Anthropic says take-homes are done without Claude unless it says otherwise.
Tips for this round
- Write down the assumptions you made about the customer brief.
- Handle API errors, retries and timeouts, since one guide says API hygiene is judged.
- Do not use Claude unless the instructions say you may.
Onsite
4 roundsCustomer conversation simulation
The interviewer plays a non-technical executive or a skeptical architect, and you run discovery through questions: business constraints, data-privacy boundaries and past AI failures. Guides stress asking over pitching.
Tips for this round
- Ask before you propose anything: goals, constraints, data limits and past AI attempts.
- Play back what you heard and confirm it before suggesting a first build.
- Explain technical points in the language of the person the interviewer is playing.
Hiring manager or project deep dive
One past project in depth: why you made each decision, how it scaled, whether an LLM fit the problem and how you worked with others. Guides say to bring a production system you operated.
Claude deployment design
Design a Claude deployment for an enterprise customer, covering architecture, security, orchestration, evaluation strategy and guardrails. Guides say to raise trade-offs before you are asked.
Values interview
Mission alignment, reasoning about AI risk, ethical dilemmas, handling conflict and pressure, and self-awareness.
Tips to Stand Out
- Know Python syntax and the standard library well. Anthropic says you can look things up in live coding, but the basics should not cost you time.
- Put independent research, a thoughtful blog post or open source work at the top of your resume, as Anthropic suggests.
- If you have an engineering background, apply as an engineer. Anthropic says you will perform better in the interviews.
- Use Claude to research Anthropic, practice answers and prepare questions. Anthropic encourages this; the no-AI default covers the interviews themselves.
- Talk through your reasoning in live rounds. Anthropic says live interviews are meant to show how you think in real time.
- Ask your recruiter early if you need interview accommodations.
Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass
- ✗Candidate guides say the customer conversation role play cuts the most candidates who passed coding. A figure of about 60 percent is repeated without a cited source.
- ✗One candidate guide calls the values interview the highest-failure stage, so sources disagree on which round cuts most.
Based on Anthropic's own pages and candidate reports.
Candidate guides estimate 4 to 6 weeks from recruiter screen to offer; Anthropic does not publish a figure. Anthropic says it uses Claude to transcribe interviews and draft questions but does not let Claude make hiring decisions, gives no feedback on interviews, and lets you reapply after 12 months or sooner if your experience changes materially. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Anthropic
- The team is new. The London and EU postings call hires founding FDEs who shape the forward-deployed motion, and the New York manager posting is for the first FDE Manager, with no existing playbook.
- FDEs build Claude-specific artifacts that run in production workflows inside customer systems: MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills. They also give white glove deployment support for Anthropic products, which postings list as Claude models, the Claude API, Claude Code and Claude for Enterprise.
- Forward Deployed Engineer and Staff Forward Deployed Engineer are the FDE titles. Applied AI Engineer is the closest customer-facing coding role: it builds pilots, prototypes and eval suites for a portfolio of customers, and the Enterprise posting lists FDE as one qualifying background. Applied AI Architect is a presales role. Technical Deployment Leads own the engagement from statement of work to production, while FDEs own the technical artifact.
- Travel is heavy: 25 to 50 percent for FDEs in London, Munich and Paris, and 25 percent for the US Staff FDE. The Applied AI Engineer, Public Sector role works mostly on site in secure government facilities and needs a TS/SCI clearance with polygraph.
- Every FDE and Applied AI posting links to the candidate AI guidance, which rules out AI in live interviews and take-homes unless Anthropic says otherwise. One candidate guide says Claude may be provided in the technical scenario round, so confirm the rule for each round with your recruiter.
- Staff FDEs are hired to lead. The posting asks them to decide what to build, own technical strategy for an account or vertical, review other FDEs' designs, lead partner-delivered engagements and advise VP and C-level stakeholders. It says shipping agents to production is not required. Hands-on agent time and deep production systems experience are.

Customer scoping practice
Vague customer problems we wrote around Anthropic's products, to scope into a first build. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline.
A large bank says "we want Claude to help our analysts" and gives you two weeks. How do you turn that into a first build?
Sample Answer
Start by asking which analysts, which task eats the most hours, what documents and systems they use, and what compliance rules cover customer data and model output. Cut scope to one workflow with one data source and read-only access, such as summarizing a filing with citations. Ship a small tool backed by an MCP server over that document store, with a human review step. Measure time per task, how often analysts edit the output, and accuracy on a set of real questions the team grades with you. A strong answer avoids promising broad automation and does not build before the security review path is clear.
A life sciences company wants to "use agents for clinical documents." Scope the first deployment.
An enterprise engineering org rolled out Claude Code a month ago and usage is low. What do you do?
A customer's support team wants Claude to resolve tickets, but their last chatbot project failed. How do you scope the restart?
AI system design practice
Design prompts we wrote for Anthropic's kind of customers. Each answer outlines what a strong design covers.
Design an MCP server that gives Claude access to a customer's internal ticketing system and knowledge base, for an enterprise with strict identity and access controls.
Sample Answer
Clarify which actions are needed (read tickets, search articles, maybe add comments) and who the end users are. The server authenticates through the customer's identity provider and acts with each user's own permissions, so Claude never sees data the user could not. Expose a small set of narrow tools with clear schemas, and keep writes behind a confirmation step. Log every call with user, tool and arguments for audit. Cover rate limits on the backing systems, timeouts and how errors reach the model so it can recover. A strong answer treats tool output as untrusted input to the model.
Design a Claude-based assistant that drafts responses to regulatory inquiries for a financial services firm.
Design the evaluation and rollout plan for moving a customer's production agent to a newer Claude model.
Design a research agent with sub-agents that helps a life sciences team review published literature on a target.
Fundamentals practice
Concept questions on what Anthropic's forward deployed engineers work with, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.
What is the Model Context Protocol, and when would you build an MCP server?
Sample Answer
MCP is an open protocol for connecting a model client to tools and data through a standard server interface. Build a server when the same system will be used by several agents or clients, or when a team should own and secure access in one place. For a single script calling one API, a direct tool definition in the app may be simpler.
How do you build an evaluation set for a customer's agent before launch?
Why can very long context be unreliable, and how do you manage it?
How do you defend an agent against prompt injection from documents or tool results?
Behavioral practice
Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral and customer rounds. They are not reported interview questions.
Tell me about a time a customer asked for something you thought was the wrong solution.
Sample Answer
Anthropic's FDE postings ask for customer discovery and a low ego. Show how you found the real need through questions, how you made the case for a different approach, and what you shipped.
Describe a time you made progress in an organization where nobody clearly owned the problem.
Tell me about a time you raised a safety or ethics concern about something you were building.
Tell me about a production system you owned that failed in front of a customer.
Practice problem: split a token budget across tool results
pythonAn agent called several tools in one turn, and result i is lengths[i] tokens long. You can put at most budget tokens of tool output into the next prompt. Allocate tokens with max-min fairness: every result gets min(lengths[i], cap) for one shared integer cap, chosen as large as possible. Tokens left over from integer rounding go one each to the results that are still truncated, earliest index first. Return the allocation as a list in input order. If the results fit, return the lengths unchanged. Raise ValueError for a negative budget or length. Example: lengths [100, 30, 500] with budget 300 gives [100, 30, 170]. The short results fit in full, and the 170 tokens left go to the long one.

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Anthropic loop, most important first:
- Practice a customer discovery role play with someone playing a skeptical executive, asking about constraints, data limits and past AI failures before proposing anything.
- Build a small Claude-powered app with an MCP server and a short eval set, so you can discuss real choices in the scenario and design rounds.
- Practice staged Python problems against a timer, such as a token budget allocator, a rate limiter and a retry queue.
- Prepare a deep dive on one production system you operated, including where an LLM did or did not fit.
- Write down your own view on AI risk and Anthropic's mission, including a point where you disagree, for the values interview.
- Read Anthropic's candidate AI guidance and confirm with your recruiter which rounds, if any, allow Claude.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rounds is the Anthropic forward deployed engineer interview?
Anthropic does not publish an FDE loop. Candidate guides describe a recruiter screen, a technical scenario screen, a coding round, a customer role play, a project deep dive, a deployment design and a values interview, the last two in a virtual onsite of about 4 to 5 hours. One guide adds a take-home. No first-hand report of a full loop was found, and the guides may draw on each other.
Can I use AI tools in an Anthropic FDE interview?
Only when Anthropic says so. Its candidate AI guidance says live interviews have no AI assistance unless Anthropic indicates otherwise, and take-home assessments are done without Claude unless Anthropic says you may. Having Claude write your code without explicit permission is listed as not allowed. Claude is encouraged for researching Anthropic, practicing answers and preparing questions. One candidate guide says Claude may be provided in the technical scenario round.
How much do Anthropic forward deployed engineers make?
Anthropic's US postings seen in October 2026 list an annual base salary of $280K to $320K for Staff Forward Deployed Engineer in New York City, San Francisco or Seattle. Applied AI Engineer postings list $200K to $320K for Enterprise and $280K to $320K for the Public Sector, Startups and Beneficial Deployments variants. The Manager, Forward Deployed Engineering posting in New York lists $320K to $405K. The pay sections do not mention a bonus or equity.
How much do Anthropic FDEs travel, and do they work in an office?
FDE postings in London, Munich and Paris and the FDE manager postings say 25 to 50 percent travel, and the US Staff FDE posting says 25 percent. Anthropic runs a hybrid policy with staff in an office at least 25 percent of the time, and the Applied AI Engineer, Enterprise posting asks for 3 days a week in the office.
How is the FDE role different from Applied AI Engineer, Applied AI Architect and Technical Deployment Lead?
FDEs embed with strategic customers and build production systems on Claude. Applied AI Engineers also write code with customer teams but act as technical advisors to a portfolio of customers. Applied AI Architects are presales and partner with account executives. Technical Deployment Leads own the engagement end to end while FDEs own the technical artifact. The Staff FDE posting places the role on the GTM team, and the London FDE posting says the Applied AI team.
Is Claude Frontier Academy a way to get hired as an Anthropic FDE?
It is a training program for other companies. On 2026-10-02 Anthropic announced a $100M commitment to train 10,000 Frontier Deployed Engineers at partner and customer firms by the end of 2027, using a residency with a graded practical and a 12 week led deployment. Anthropic says the curriculum draws on how its own engineers learn.
What experience does Anthropic ask for in FDE postings?
The Forward Deployed Engineer posting asks for 4+ years in a technical customer-facing role such as FDE, or as a software engineer with consulting or product experience, and encourages former technical founders. It also asks for production LLM work and strong Python. The manager posting asks for 10+ years plus 2+ years managing people in a services, post-sales or FDE org.
