LinkedIn MLOps Engineer Interview Guide

The short answer: LinkedIn does not use the title MLOps Engineer. The work is posted as Software Engineer - AI Platform, whose posting spans Model Training Infrastructure, the Feature Platform, Model Serving Infrastructure and an ML Ops team for metadata, observability, ramping and experimentation. LinkedIn's official How We Hire page lists four stages for every role: application, a recruiter conversation (sometimes followed by a call with the hiring manager or a team member), several interviews with team members on different skill areas, and a decision. Candidate reports about general software engineer loops add a coding phone screen, then two coding rounds, a system design round, a hiring manager round and a deep dive on a past project. We found no report specific to AI Platform. Last reviewed October 2026.

What is different at LinkedIn

  • The title says Software Engineer. LinkedIn posts ML platform work as Software Engineer - AI Platform, Staff Software Engineer - AI Platform and Sr. Staff Software Engineer, AI Infrastructure. Its AI Engineer titles are the product-facing ML role: they own a recommender or classification system end to end and use the platform.
  • One posting covers four teams. The AI Platform posting spans Model Training Infrastructure, Feature Engineering (a Feature Platform across online, offline and nearline), Model Serving Infrastructure for LLMs and personalization models, and ML Ops for metadata, observability, orchestration, ramping and experimentation.
  • The scale is large. Postings describe training models with hundreds of billions of parameters on thousands of GPUs, feature serving at millions of queries per second and model serving at tens of thousands, with hundreds of new models tried each quarter.
  • Open source is part of the job. The team says it has many committers to TensorFlow, Horovod, Ray, vLLM, Hugging Face and DeepSpeed, Staff postings list influencing open-source projects as a duty, and LinkedIn open-sourced Liger-Kernel, Triton kernels for LLM training whose paper reports about 20% higher throughput and 60% lower GPU memory.
  • The platform has a long history. LinkedIn started its Pro-ML initiative in 2017 to double ML engineer effectiveness, and its Pro-ML Workspace portal tracks training, evaluation, publishing and model health on an AI Metadata service.
  • The AI rules are published. LinkedIn says not to use AI in live interviews or assessments unless it was explicitly allowed in advance, and it encourages AI for researching roles, exploring concepts and mock interview practice.

ML platform design practice

Prompts we wrote for this guide around LinkedIn's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.

Design a feature platform that lets AI engineers create, compute, store, serve and monitor features online, offline and nearline, at millions of queries per second.

MediumSystem Design

Sample Answer

Use one feature definition for batch, streaming and online paths so values match. Compute offline with Spark, nearline with Flink or Beam, and serve from a low-latency store with caching for hot entities. Track freshness and ownership per feature, and run automated checks that online and offline values agree. Cover access control and privacy rules for member data.

ML operations practice

Prompts we wrote for this guide around LinkedIn's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.

Online and offline values of a feature disagree for 3% of requests. How do you find the cause?

MediumOperations

Sample Answer

Sample mismatched requests and compare the two values with their timestamps. Look for late or missing data in the nearline path, different default values, and timezone or unit changes. Check whether mismatches cluster by entity type or time. Fix the source, then keep an automated statistical check running, like the health checks LinkedIn built into Pro-ML.

Coding practice

Prompts we wrote for this guide around LinkedIn's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.

Return the k most frequent feature names in a stream of feature access logs.

MediumCoding

Sample Answer

Count with a hash map, then keep a min-heap of size k or use heapq.nlargest. That runs in O(n log k). Break ties by name so results are stable.

Behavioral practice

Prompts we wrote for this guide around LinkedIn's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.

Walk me through a platform project you led, from the problem to the result.

MediumBehavioral

Sample Answer

Candidate reports describe a technical communication round like this. Explain the users, the design, the scale, a trade-off you made and what you measured. Expect follow-up questions on every claim.

Practice problem: find features with online and offline skew

python

LinkedIn's ML platform checks that features served online match the values computed offline. Write feature_skew(online, offline, tol, max_rate). Each input is a list of (request_id, feature, value). For each feature in online, a request is a mismatch if offline has no value for the same request and feature, or if the two values differ by more than tol. If a key appears twice in one list, the later value wins. Return (feature, mismatch_rate) pairs with a rate above max_rate, rounded to 3 decimals, sorted by rate from high to low and then by name. Example: online [("r1", "age", 30), ("r2", "age", 41), ("r3", "age", 25), ("r1", "ctr", 0.1), ("r2", "ctr", 0.2)], offline [("r1", "age", 30), ("r2", "age", 40), ("r3", "age", 25.2), ("r1", "ctr", 0.1)], tol 0.5 and max_rate 0.25 give [("ctr", 0.5), ("age", 0.333)].

Python
1from typing import List, Tuple
2
3def feature_skew(online: List[Tuple[str, str, float]], offline: List[Tuple[str, str, float]],
4                 tol: float, max_rate: float) -> List[Tuple[str, float]]:
5 """Return features whose online and offline values disagree too often."""

How to prepare

A plan for the LinkedIn loop, most important first:

  1. Ask your recruiter which AI Platform sub-team the role is on (training, features, serving or MLOps) and what each interview covers, since LinkedIn publishes only its general stages.
  2. Practice medium coding problems on arrays, strings, stacks, queues, search and sort, the types candidate reports describe for the phone screen and coding rounds.
  3. Practice ML platform system design at LinkedIn's scale: a feature platform at millions of QPS, GPU serving, and a ramp and monitoring layer for many models.
  4. Prepare a deep dive on a platform you built, with its scale, trade-offs and failures, for the technical communication round candidates report.
  5. Review deep learning systems in depth for your sub-team: distributed training and parallelism, GPU inference, or streaming feature computation.
  6. Read LinkedIn's AI usage page and practice without AI help, since AI is not allowed in live interviews unless LinkedIn says so in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds is the LinkedIn MLOps engineer interview?

LinkedIn says the interview stage has several interviews with team members, each on a different skill area. Candidate reports for general software engineer loops describe a coding phone screen, then about 5 to 6 rounds; sources disagree on the exact count, and none is specific to AI Platform.

Can I use AI tools in a LinkedIn interview?

Not unless LinkedIn says so in advance. Its AI usage page says: "Please do not use AI during live interviews unless the recruiting team has explicitly shared in advance that AI is part of the interview format for that role. If AI use is permitted, your recruiter will clearly communicate what's allowed and how it will be assessed." For assessments: "Please only use AI tools for coding or specialized assessments if your interviewer or interview module explicitly indicates the use of AI is permitted." If you are unsure, ask your recruiter.

How much do LinkedIn AI Platform engineers make?

In postings seen in October 2026, Software Engineer - AI Platform lists $120K to $195K base, Staff Software Engineer - AI Platform $175K to $287K, and Sr. Staff Software Engineer, AI Infrastructure $198K to $326K. All three say total pay may include an annual bonus and stock.

Does LinkedIn hire MLOps engineers?

Not under that title. The Software Engineer - AI Platform posting includes an ML Ops team (MLOps and Experimentation) that owns ramping, observability, AI metadata, orchestration and experimentation for all models, next to training, feature and serving teams.

Is the job remote?

No. The postings are hybrid: you work from home and from a LinkedIn office on days set by team needs, in Mountain View, CA or, for Sr. Staff AI Infrastructure, Mountain View or Bellevue, WA.

How much experience do I need?

The Software Engineer - AI Platform posting asks for 1+ years building deep learning systems, with 2+ years and an MS or PhD preferred, making it the lowest experienced entry point we found. Staff asks 4+ years and Sr. Staff 5+ years plus 2+ as an architect or tech lead. LinkedIn also runs technical internships and hires entry-level engineers, without an ML platform specific program.

How is this role different from a LinkedIn AI Engineer?

AI Engineers own a product recommender or classification system end to end, from design and training to A/B tests and on-call, and need ML, IR or NLP experience. AI Platform engineers build the shared training, feature, serving and MLOps infrastructure those engineers use, with more weight on distributed systems, GPUs and deep learning framework internals.
