The short answer: Uber does not use the title MLOps Engineer. Its ML platform work is posted as Software Engineer roles on Michelangelo, Uber's in-house ML platform, for teams such as the Feature Store and AI Infra Training. Uber's ML & AI Engineering interview guide lists a 30-minute recruiter call, a 60-minute technical phone screen, then 3 to 6 interviews of about 60 minutes depending on level, covering coding, design and architecture, and collaboration. Uber does not say whether ML platform candidates get this guide or the Backend Engineering guide, so confirm which one applies with your recruiter. AI tools are not allowed unless your recruiter says otherwise. Last reviewed October 2026.

Uber MLOps engineer interview process
Every step below comes from Uber's ML & AI Engineering interview guide, which lists a different loop for each level (L3, L4, L5A, L5B and L6+). Uber does not publish what the specialization round asks an ML platform candidate, and we found no readable candidate report on an ML platform loop.
5 to 9 rounds
Screen
2 roundsTalk with a Recruiter or Sourcer
The same at every level. Uber does not describe what this call covers.
Tips for this round
- Ask which interview guide applies to the role: ML & AI Engineering or Backend Engineering.
- Confirm your target level, since the loop changes by level.
Business (Technical) Phone Screen
Coding plus Design & Architecture from L3 to L5B. At L6+ it is replaced by a 60-minute Hiring Manager screen on scope and impact and a 60-minute Technical Architecture screen. Uber says this screen sets your initial level, and the final level is decided after the panel debrief.
Onsite
6 roundsSoftware Engineering: Algorithms & Data Structures (Coding 1)
Algorithms and data structures at every level. Uber's example questions are short array, string, sorting, two-pointer, dynamic programming and search problems.
Tips for this round
- Practice array, string, two-pointer, dynamic programming and search problems, the types in Uber's examples.
- Write testable code and talk through edge cases.
Software Engineering: Depth in Specialization (Coding 2)
Coding in your specialization at every level. Uber does not publish what this round asks an ML platform candidate, so ask your recruiter.
Design & Architecture: New Problem
A fresh design problem without a textbook answer. Uber says it looks for simple designs, clear trade-offs and reuse of existing systems. Not listed for L3.
Design & Architecture: Previously Solved Problem
A deep dive on a design you already built. At L5A it is combined with Collaboration & Leadership in one 75-minute round, at L5B with Impact - Efficiency & Quality, and at L6+ it is its own 60-minute round.
Collaboration & Leadership
A behavioral round on working across teams, where values and success attributes are assessed. A separate round at L3, L4, L5B and L6+, folded into the design deep dive at L5A.
Impact - Efficiency & Quality
Combined with the previously solved design round at L5B and its own round at L6+. Uber does not describe its content.
Tips to Stand Out
- Have an elevator pitch ready, understand the role and its business line, and prepare one or two past projects for each competency.
- Use the STAR method, be ready to defend your reasoning when challenged, and be honest about what you have and have not done.
- Ask clarifying questions; Uber says it does not grade knowledge of a specific language, so use the one you know best.
- If one interview goes badly, pause and reset; Uber says it looks at all interviews together.
- Test Zoom and the invite link days ahead, use a quiet, well-lit space with headphones, and join a few minutes early.
- Uber lists the Uber Engineering blog and the books Designing Data-Intensive Applications and Software Architecture: The Hard Parts as resources.
Based on Uber's own pages.
Uber says interviews typically last 60 minutes, recruiters usually follow up within 2 to 3 business days after each one, and rescheduling is limited. It publishes no total timeline. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Uber
- The title says Software Engineer. Uber files ML platform work as Software Engineering jobs, sometimes under a generic listing title such as Staff Software Engineer - Engineer, with the real title (for example Staff Software Engineer - ML Infra) in the body. Machine Learning Engineers on product teams such as Maps build models and use Michelangelo as a tool, and scientists go through a separate Sciences loop.
- You would work on Michelangelo, Uber's in-house ML platform since 2016. Uber reported about 400 active ML projects, more than 20,000 training jobs a month, more than 5,000 models in production and 10 million real-time predictions per second at peak in May 2024. Named parts include the Palette feature store, the Gallery model registry, Triton serving, Ray for training and a Gen AI Gateway for LLMs.
- GPU infrastructure is a large part of the job. Uber moved all ML projects to Ray on Kubernetes at the start of 2024, with a global control plane that routes jobs to resource pools by ownership and load, and reported training 1.5x to 4x faster. Its AI infrastructure team also benchmarked 17 GPU and CPU SKUs in 2023.
- Which guide applies is not stated. Uber's engineering hub says the process is consistent across engineering roles with different technical focus. The Backend Engineering guide adds the online coding assessment before the phone screen at L3, and the ML & AI Engineering guide does not, so ask your recruiter.
- The loop grows with level. L3 has three interviews after the phone screen, L6+ has two screens and six interviews, and the previously solved design round only appears from L5A.
- The AI rule is strict by default. AI tools, including code auto-completion, are not allowed unless your recruiter says otherwise, and some technical interviews may provide an AI agent that the recruiter tells you about ahead of time.

ML platform design practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Uber's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Design a real-time feature serving layer for Michelangelo that returns features in milliseconds at high concurrency.
Sample Answer
Separate the offline store used for training from an online key-value store used for serving, and fill the online store from batch jobs and Kafka and Flink streams. Put a cache in front for hot keys and batch lookups per request. Define SLIs and SLOs for latency and freshness, and plan for a cold cache and a slow store. Explain how ML engineers register new features without paging your team.
Design a global control plane that routes Ray training jobs to GPU resource pools across clusters and regions.
Design a gateway that lets Uber teams call external and in-house LLMs.
Michelangelo peaks at 10 million predictions per second. If one host serves 20,000 predictions per second and you run hosts at 60% of capacity, how many hosts do you need, and how many to survive losing one of three regions?
ML operations practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Uber's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Uber's ETA model gets ground truth only when a trip ends. How would you monitor its live accuracy?
Sample Answer
Log every prediction with an ID, then join it with the actual arrival time when the trip ends, which is how Michelangelo tracks live accuracy. Compute error by city and hour on a rolling window and alert on shifts. Watch input feature distributions too, since they move before the labels arrive.
Why might a GPU be a good choice for serving but a poor one for training?
How would you roll out a new version of the feature serving service without breaking models in production?
Training jobs on a shared GPU fleet are slow this week. Where do you look?
Coding practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Uber's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Given job durations and k GPUs, assign jobs to keep the finish time of the busiest GPU low.
Sample Answer
Sort jobs from longest to shortest and give each to the GPU with the least total load, using a min-heap. This greedy rule runs in O(n log n + n log k) and is close to optimal in practice. For jobs [7, 5, 4, 3, 1] on 2 GPUs it gives loads 7 + 3 = 10 and 5 + 4 + 1 = 10, a finish time of 10, which is optimal because the total is 20.
Return the p99 latency over a sliding window of the last n requests.
Merge overlapping GPU reservations given as (start, end) intervals.
Given a list of features with their dependencies, return an order to compute them, or report a cycle.
Behavioral practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Uber's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Tell me about a project that changed how other teams worked.
Sample Answer
Uber ties example prompts to its Trip Obsessed value. Describe the problem, what your platform changed for its users, your own role and the measured result.
Tell me about working with a team outside your own to ship something.
Walk me through a system you designed and what you would change now.
Tell me about a time you were wrong about a technical call.
Practice problem: route training jobs to GPU pools
pythonUber routes ML jobs to resource pools by ownership and load. Build a simple router. Write route_jobs(pools, jobs). pools is a list of (name, owner, capacity) in GPUs, and jobs is a list of (job_id, owner, gpus) in arrival order. For each job, pick among pools owned by the job's owner the one with the most free GPUs that can fit the job; if none fits, try pools owned by "shared" the same way. Break ties by pool name. If nothing fits, the job is queued. Return (assignments, queued): a dict of job_id to pool name and a list of queued job_ids in order. Example: pools [("a1", "maps", 8), ("s1", "shared", 16)] and jobs [("j1", "maps", 6), ("j2", "maps", 4), ("j3", "eats", 12), ("j4", "eats", 4)] give ({"j1": "a1", "j2": "s1", "j3": "s1"}, ["j4"]).

3def route_jobs(pools: List[Tuple[str, str, int]],
4 jobs: List[Tuple[str, str, int]]) -> Tuple[Dict[str, str], List[str]]:

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Uber loop, most important first:
- Ask your recruiter which guide applies (ML & AI Engineering or Backend Engineering), your target level and what the specialization round covers.
- Practice algorithms and data structures for two 60-minute coding rounds, using the problem types in Uber's examples: arrays, strings, two pointers, dynamic programming and search.
- Practice ML platform design with real numbers: real-time feature serving, GPU job scheduling across clusters, model serving and an LLM gateway.
- Prepare a deep dive on a system you built, with its scale, failures and trade-offs, for the previously solved design round from L5A up.
- Read Uber's Michelangelo and Ray on Kubernetes blog posts so you can talk about the platform you would work on.
- Write STAR stories for Collaboration & Leadership mapped to Uber's values and success attributes, and practice without AI help.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rounds is the Uber MLOps engineer interview?
Uber's ML & AI Engineering guide lists a 30-minute recruiter call and a 60-minute phone screen, then 3 interviews at L3, 4 at L4 and L5A, 5 at L5B and 6 at L6+, each about 60 minutes. Ask your recruiter whether ML platform roles use this guide or the Backend Engineering guide.
Can I use AI tools in an Uber interview?
Not unless your recruiter says so. Uber says: "Unless your recruiter specifically tells you otherwise, AI tools aren't allowed during interviews. This includes tools like ChatGPT, automated response generators, or code auto-completion programs." It also says: "In some technical interviews, you may be provided with an AI agent as part of the coding environment. If that's the case, your recruiter will let you know ahead of time."
How much do Uber ML platform engineers make?
In postings seen in October 2026, Senior ML platform and ML infra roles list $202K to $224K base and Staff ML infra roles list $232K to $258K, the same in San Francisco, Seattle and Sunnyvale. Postings mention bonus eligibility and possible equity.
Does Uber hire MLOps engineers?
Not under that title. The work is posted as Software Engineer roles on the ML platform or ML Infra, such as the Michelangelo Feature Store, AI Infra Training and ML infrastructure for AV Labs. Read the body title, which is often more specific than the listing title.
Is the job remote?
Usually not. Postings say employees spend at least 50% of their time in the office unless approved for full remote work. Uber's interview guide says most employees come in three days a week, but it names Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as anchor days in one place and Tuesday and Thursday in another.
Is there on-call?
The Feature Store posting says engineers define SLIs and SLOs, build observability and join on-call rotations to keep 99.99%+ reliability. The other platform postings do not mention on-call.
How is this role different from an Uber machine learning engineer?
Uber runs a central AI/ML platform team plus ML engineers and data scientists embedded in product teams. Platform postings focus on distributed systems, latency SLOs and on-call, while ML engineer postings such as Maps build models for one product and use Michelangelo as a tool.
