McKinsey & Company Business Analyst Interview Guide

The short answer: At McKinsey, the business analyst is the entry-level generalist consultant: you join a client team, own a workstream and build the analysis and recommendations. McKinsey says most consulting applicants take Solve, a game-based assessment that needs no preparation, and that each interview pairs a Personal Experience Interview (PEI) with a Problem Solving Interview, which is a case. Candidate reports add that there are two first-round interviews and two to three final-round interviews, about 45 to 60 minutes each. McKinsey's integrity rules allow pen and paper only: no calculator, no generative AI and no prepared notes. Last reviewed October 2026.

Illustrative week · McKinsey & Company

An illustrative week for a business analyst, built from what McKinsey & Company says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary by team.

Culture notes

  • McKinsey asks candidates to be ready to discuss its values, such as the obligation to dissent, and expects everyone on a team to challenge findings.
  • First-year staffing is decided by professional development with input from teams; BAs are deliberately given unfamiliar problems.
  • Most new consultants start as generalists across industries and functions, and some join as practice consultants.

Key takeaway: Expect to own one workstream on a small client team, move between data, interviews and slides, and present what you find to the client.

Solve assessment

Online, game-based

McKinsey says Solve measures natural problem-solving ability, needs no preparation and is considered alongside the rest of your application. Depending on role and location there may be a phone screen or a test instead or as well. Candidate guides name two games, Redrock Study and Sea Wolf, plus a third on longer invites.

Tips for this round

  • McKinsey says no preparation is needed; read each game's objective before you act.
  • Prioritize your actions before you test hypotheses, as hires on McKinsey's blog advise.
  • No apps, AI tools or prepared notes unless approved as an accommodation.

First round interviews

60mTwo interviews, each a PEI and a case

McKinsey says each interview combines a PEI on your past experiences with a case on a typical client problem. Candidate reports say engagement managers or associate partners interview, the case takes about 25 to 40 minutes and the PEI about 10 to 20, and the case is interviewer-led.

business_casemental_mathbehavioral

Tips for this round

  • Restate the question and the goal before you structure the case.
  • Do the math on paper, slowly and out loud, and say what each number means.
  • Use a different PEI story in each interview.

Tips to Stand Out

  • For the PEI, choose experiences that mattered, focus on your own role, lead with your reasoning and expect a conversation.
  • For the case, review McKinsey's practice cases, listen carefully and give answers tailored to the question instead of a standard framework.
  • Write down important information during the case and ask the interviewer to explain anything unclear.
  • Approach Solve with curiosity; McKinsey says it needs no preparation. Hires on its blog advise understanding the objective first.
  • For virtual interviews, use a quiet private space, keep pen, paper and water nearby, keep the camera on and disable AI note-taking tools.
  • Bring questions for your interviewers and be ready to discuss McKinsey's values, such as the obligation to dissent.

Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass

  • ✗A candidate guide says candidates over-structure instead of answering the specific question asked.
  • ✗The same guide lists not restating the problem and the success metric, and rushed arithmetic.
  • ✗It also warns against reusing one PEI story across different areas.
  • ✗It says inconsistency across Solve, the cases and the PEI sinks more candidates than one hard question.

Based on McKinsey & Company's own pages and candidate reports.

McKinsey says the process and timeline differ by role and location, and the recruiter shares details if you are invited. Candidate guides say both first-round interviewers must support you advancing, and that Americas full-time interviews start in late October with decisions by mid-November. Last reviewed October 2026.

What is different at McKinsey & Company

  • The business analyst is a generalist consultant. BAs work in client teams of typically 3 to 5 consultants, own a workstream, combine research, data analysis, interviews and brainstorming, and present to client management. Data science, research and delivery analysts, such as the Capabilities & Insights Analyst, are separate job families.
  • Every interview has a PEI and a case, so behavioral depth is tested in each round instead of a separate fit interview. McKinsey asks you to bring two personal examples for each of four areas. Candidate guides name the areas Connection, Drive, Leadership and Growth.
  • Solve comes before the interviews. McKinsey says it needs no preparation and no business knowledge, and most consulting applicants are invited to it.
  • The integrity rules are strict: participate alone on one screen, camera on showing your upper body and hands, pen and paper only, and no calculator. Interviewers may ask to review your notes, and violations can lead to disqualification or a rescinded offer.
  • Titles and tracks vary. Some offices call the role Fellow, and US practice postings for Operations, Manufacturing & Supply Chain and Private Capital ask for 1+ years of experience and domain exposure. Travel is part of the job, up to 80% in the Operations and Manufacturing postings. BAs usually stay two to three years before graduate school or more work experience, and some move directly to associate.
  • McKinsey publishes a table of what is allowed. Generating real-time answers during an interview and using AI during assessments, unless specifically permitted, are not allowed. Polishing your resume, practicing interview questions and asking AI to explain concepts or frameworks are encouraged. It also asks you to disable any installed AI note-taking tools before a virtual interview.

A private equity client is thinking about buying a regional chain of 200 gyms. How would you structure the diligence?

MediumBusiness Sense

Sample Answer

Start with the question: is the price right for the cash flows and growth? Cover the market (local demand and competitors), the chain's position (pricing, membership trends, churn), unit economics per gym and the growth plan. Size revenue with stated assumptions, for example 200 gyms x 2,000 members x $50 a month x 12 = $240 million a year. End with the main risks and what would change the recommendation.

A product sells for $40, costs $25 a unit to make, and the business has $3 million a year in fixed costs. What is break-even volume?

MediumBusiness Sense

Sample Answer

Contribution per unit is $40 - $25 = $15. Break-even is $3,000,000 / $15 = 200,000 units a year. A check: 200,000 x $15 = $3 million.

Tell me about a time you disagreed with someone more senior and said so.

MediumBehavioral

Sample Answer

McKinsey names the obligation to dissent as one of its values. Explain what you disagreed with and why, how you raised it, how the other person responded and what was decided. Lead with your reasoning, as McKinsey advises for the PEI.

Practice problem: which products make 80% of revenue?

python

A McKinsey BA on a retail workstream is checking how concentrated a client's revenue is. Write pareto_cut(revenue, share) that takes a dict of product to revenue and a share between 0 and 1, and returns the shortest list of products, largest revenue first (ties broken by name), whose combined revenue is at least share of the total. Return [] if total revenue is 0, and raise ValueError if share is not in (0, 1] or any revenue is negative. Example: {"A": 50, "B": 30, "C": 10, "D": 6, "E": 4} with share 0.8 returns ["A", "B"], because 50 + 30 = 80 is 80% of 100.

Practice in the Engine

How to prepare

A plan for the McKinsey & Company loop, most important first:

  1. Practice interviewer-led cases out loud: restate the question, give a structure tailored to it and answer each question the interviewer asks.
  2. Drill case math with pen and paper only, since McKinsey bans calculators: percentages, break-even, payback and growth rates.
  3. Prepare two PEI stories for each of the four areas, each one about your own role and your reasoning, ready for deep follow-up.
  4. Work through McKinsey's published practice cases, such as Beautify, and compare your answers with theirs.
  5. Read the posting for your office or practice (generalist, Operations, Private Capital) so your stories and questions fit it.
  6. Set up a quiet room, one screen, pen and paper and the camera framing McKinsey asks for, and confirm the format with your recruiter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds is the McKinsey business analyst interview?

McKinsey describes Solve, then interviews that each combine a PEI and a case. It does not publish the count. Candidate reports describe two first-round interviews and two to three final-round interviews, and a 2020 forum thread mostly agreed on two in the first round. Confirm the format with your recruiter.

What is the McKinsey Personal Experience Interview?

It is the part of each interview that goes deep on one past experience. McKinsey says to choose experiences that mattered, focus on your own role, lead with your reasoning and expect a conversation, and to bring two examples for each of four areas. Candidate guides name the areas Connection, Drive, Leadership and Growth.

Can I use a calculator in a McKinsey interview?

No. McKinsey's assessment integrity expectations ask candidates to refrain from using a calculator, apps, websites, generative AI or prepared notes. Practice case math with pen and paper.

Can I use AI tools in a McKinsey interview?

No. McKinsey says "Using AI to misrepresent yourself or to generate real-time responses during an interview goes against our values, creates an uneven playing field, and prevents us from understanding who you truly are." It encourages AI for resume polish, practice and learning frameworks, and asks you to disable AI note-taking tools in virtual interviews.

How much do McKinsey business analysts make?

In US postings seen in October 2026, the general Business Analyst posting lists $112K to $125K, and practice postings for Operations, Manufacturing & Supply Chain and Private Capital list $125K to $132K. Postings say certain roles are eligible for discretionary bonuses.

How do I get in as a student?

McKinsey posts a Business Analyst Intern role of 8 to 10 weeks on a client team for current undergraduates, and a Sophomore Summer Business Analyst program in the US and Canada. If you are not selected for an internship, you can still apply for full-time roles in your campus window. Experienced professionals with a bachelor's and a few years of experience can also join as business analysts.

How is a McKinsey business analyst different from an associate?

Both do client consulting work and go through the same PEI and case process. The business analyst role is typically for people within four years of an undergraduate degree. A bachelor's plus 4+ years of experience or an advanced degree such as an MBA typically joins as an associate.
