The short answer: At Amazon, a business analyst is an analytics and reporting role: the postings ask for SQL, deep Excel and Tableau, and the job is building metrics, reports and dashboards for a business team. Amazon publishes no interview prep page for business analysts, so the official steps come from its general hiring pages: an online assessment for some roles, one or two phone screens, and a loop with two to seven interviewers who all ask Leadership Principles questions. Candidate reports add a SQL screen and a loop of four to six rounds that mixes SQL, a business case and behavioral questions, but that evidence is thin. Amazon does not publish a candidate AI rule on its careers pages. Last reviewed October 2026.

Amazon business analyst interview: quick answers
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| How many interview rounds? | Amazon publishes no BA loop. Its general process is an online assessment for some roles, one or two phone screens, then a loop of individual interviews with two to seven people. Candidate reports describe four to six loop rounds. |
| What do the rounds test? | Amazon says every interview uses behavioral questions based on its Leadership Principles. Candidate reports add SQL (joins, CTEs, window functions), Excel and an open-ended business case on a metric. |
| Can I use AI tools? | Amazon does not publish a candidate AI rule on its careers pages; ask your recruiter. Its assessments page says: "All assessments must be completed solely by the applicant." A 2025 news report described internal guidance asking candidates not to use generative AI tools unless explicitly permitted. |
| How much does an Amazon business analyst make? | US postings list base salary from $66.9K (Business Analyst, Nashville) to $160K (Senior Business Analyst and Business Analyst III). Most Seattle and Bellevue postings list $82.7K to $130.1K, plus sign-on payments and RSUs. |
| How long does it take? | Amazon says phone screen results come within two business days, loop results within five, and the whole process usually takes three to six weeks. |
| Is it the same job as a business intelligence engineer? | No. Amazon's BIE postings ask for data modeling, ETL pipelines and Python, and BIE has its own prep page and loop. BA postings center on Excel, SQL, reporting and business recommendations. |

A Week in the Life of a Amazon Business Analyst
Illustrative week · Amazon
An illustrative week for a business analyst, built from what Amazon says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary by team.
Culture notes
- Amazon describes a culture of data-driven decisions that needs timely, accurate and actionable business intelligence.
- Teams write narrative memos instead of slide decks and read them silently at the start of meetings.
- Every candidate is evaluated through the Leadership Principles, and a Bar Raiser from another team helps decide.
- All US BA postings we read are on-site.
Key takeaway: Expect to own a set of metrics and reports, answer ad hoc questions in SQL and Excel, and write up what the numbers mean for the business.

Amazon's BA postings state no L levels, and titles alone do not show level: a Whole Foods posting titled Sr Business Analyst says it is hiring a Business Analyst II, and both post the same range as plain BA postings. Candidate guides map BA to L4, BA II to L5 and BA III to L6; Amazon does not confirm this.

Amazon business analyst interview process
Amazon has no business analyst prep page, so these steps come from its general How We Hire pages and its articles on phone screens, loops and the Bar Raiser. The SQL content of the screens and the round mix in the loop come from candidate reports, which are few.
~3 to 6 weeks end to end
Screen
3 roundsOnline assessment (some roles)
Amazon's assessments page names work style assessments, rated against the Leadership Principles, and work sample simulations of job tasks, such as reading data from a chart. Candidate reports describe SQL, Excel and analytical reasoning content for BA roles.
Tips for this round
- Treat the work style part as a Leadership Principles check and answer as you really work.
- Amazon says missed deadlines get no extension, so book a quiet slot early.
- Candidate reports describe SQL and Excel questions for BA roles; keep both sharp.
Recruiter screen
Candidate reports describe a call on your background, analytical experience and interest in Amazon. Amazon does not document this step for business analysts.
Phone screen (one or two)
Amazon says phone screens are behavioral and rooted in the Leadership Principles, and some teams add a role-specific exercise. Candidate guides describe a technical screen with a BA or the hiring manager that includes writing SQL and walking through a past analysis.
Onsite
2 roundsLoop: Leadership Principles and Bar Raiser
Amazon says the loop has two to seven interviewers, which may include managers, teammates, stakeholders and a Bar Raiser from another team, and that every interviewer asks behavioral questions guided by the Leadership Principles. Some roles add a writing sample or a short role-specific exercise.
Tips for this round
- Bring two or three stories per Leadership Principle, each with numbers.
- Say "I" and describe your own actions, not the team's.
Loop: SQL and business case (candidate reports)
Candidate reports describe SQL in the loop and an open-ended business case, such as a declining metric or a refund-rate problem, where you frame the problem, pick data and success metrics and recommend an action. Reports disagree: one senior BA had a SQL query in the final round, while guides say some BA loops are mostly behavioral.
Tips to Stand Out
- Reflect on how you have shown the Leadership Principles in past work, since Amazon evaluates every candidate through them.
- Use STAR (or context, task, actions, outcome), say "I" instead of "we", and back each story with data or results.
- Prepare stories on risks, successes, failures and growth. Failure stories are fine if you show what you learned.
- Answer the question asked, keep answers structured, use metrics and choose recent examples.
- Pause after an answer and ask whether the interviewer wants more context, and ask for clarification when a question lacks it.
- In remote technical questions you can share a drawing tool or whiteboard app, or hold paper up to the camera.
Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass
- ✗A rejected senior BA candidate said strong SQL alone was not enough without explaining decisions and trade-offs.
- ✗Candidate guides say Leadership Principles evidence is weighed alongside SQL and case work, so a strong query alone will not carry a round.
Based on Amazon's own pages and candidate reports.
Amazon says loop results come within five business days and the whole process usually takes three to six weeks. It avoids brain teasers. Candidate sources disagree on loop size: most describe four to six rounds, while one guide that cites no sources describes only three. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Amazon
- Business analyst at Amazon means analytics and reporting. Postings ask for SQL, 5+ years of Excel (VBA, pivot tables, array functions and power pivots) and Tableau, and the work is recurring metrics, dashboards and recommendations for a business team. Excel depth is stated more strongly than in BIE postings. The Business System Analyst title is a separate requirements and systems role.
- The role is spread across Amazon. Current BA postings come from Fulfillment by Amazon, Selling Partner Services, Amazon Logistics, Amazon Air, Whole Foods Market, AWS Global Network Delivery, Healthcare Finance Operations and re:Cycle Reverse Logistics, so the business case you get may be about any of them.
- BA, BIE and Data Scientist are separate job families. BIE postings ask for data modeling, warehousing, ETL pipelines and Python, and BIE has its own prep page with an online assessment and a five-interview loop. Data Scientist postings sit in the Science family and ask for statistical or ML modeling, often with a Master's or above. Amazon publishes nothing equivalent for BA, so do not assume the BIE format applies.
- Every interviewer asks Leadership Principles questions, and one may be a Bar Raiser from outside the team who runs the debrief. Amazon writes one-to-six-page narrative memos instead of slide decks, which is why some roles ask for a writing sample.
- All US BA postings we read list the location type as on-site. Amazon's CEO set an in-office expectation from January 2, 2025, except for approved exceptions.
- Amazon does not publish a candidate AI rule on its careers pages. Its assessments page says "All assessments must be completed solely by the applicant." A March 2025 news report quoted internal guidance asking candidates not to use generative AI tools during interviews unless explicitly permitted; that is press reporting. Many 2026 BA postings list using generative AI tools, and checking their output, as a preferred skill for the job itself.

Table shipments(shipment_id, fc_id, ship_date, promised_date, delivered_date). Write a query for the on-time delivery rate by fulfillment center for shipments sent in the week starting October 19, 2026.
Sample Answer
SELECT fc_id, COUNT(*) AS shipments, AVG(CASE WHEN delivered_date <= promised_date THEN 1.0 ELSE 0.0 END) AS on_time_rate FROM shipments WHERE ship_date >= DATE '2026-10-19' AND ship_date < DATE '2026-10-26' GROUP BY fc_id ORDER BY on_time_rate. Say how you treat shipments with no delivered_date: here they count as late, because the CASE returns 0 when the date is NULL. If the stakeholder wants them left out until they arrive, filter them and report how many were excluded. Use a half-open date range so the last day is not dropped.
Table orders(order_id, seller_id, category, order_date, price, quantity). Return the top 3 sellers by sales in each category for September 2026.
Using the same orders table plus a refunded flag, show the week-over-week change in refund rate for each category.
A stakeholder sends a 200,000-row Excel export of listings and asks for the defect rate by marketplace and month, refreshed every week. How do you build it?

The refund rate for a category on Amazon rose from 2% to 3% week over week. How do you find out why?
Sample Answer
Check the data first: did the refund definition, the data pipeline or the category mapping change? Then size it: on 100,000 orders a week, one point is 1,000 more refunds. Split by seller, item, fulfillment method and refund reason, and separate mix (more orders from high-refund items) from rate (the same items refunding more). Line up the start date with launches, policy changes or a new seller. End with a recommendation and the metric you would watch to confirm the fix.
Whole Foods Market sells a private brand item at $5.00 with a unit cost of $3.00. Pricing Strategy proposes a 10% price cut. How much must units grow to keep gross profit flat?
A customer service site gets 12,000 contacts a day with an average handle time of 6 minutes. Each agent has 6.5 productive hours a shift, and 15% of scheduled agents are out on a given day. How many agents do you schedule?
Amazon Air's on-time delivery metric dropped for a week across more than 100 daily flights. What would you put on the dashboard and in the memo?
Metrics and statistics practice

A dashboard shows checkout conversion up from 10.0% to 10.4% week over week, with 50,000 sessions each week. Is the change real?
Sample Answer
Use a two-proportion z-test. The pooled rate is 10.2%, so the standard error of the difference is sqrt(0.102 x 0.898 x (2 / 50,000)) = about 0.0019. The change is 0.004, so z = 0.004 / 0.0019 = about 2.1, which is significant at the 5% level, but only just. Before calling it, check for a holiday or traffic mix change between the two weeks, and see whether the lift holds next week.
Each region's on-time rate went up, but the overall on-time rate went down. How?
Delivery times have a long tail of very late packages. Should the dashboard show the mean or the median?
Sales this week are 20% above last week. The stakeholder wants to credit a new promotion. What do you check?
Behavioral practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Amazon's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
How have you used data to develop a strategy?
Sample Answer
Amazon gives this as an example of its behavioral questions. Name the decision, the data you gathered and why, what it showed, the strategy you recommended and the result in numbers. Say "I" and keep the story recent.
Tell me about a time a report you owned had an error that others relied on.
Tell me about a time you used data to change a stakeholder's mind.
Tell me about a time you took a risk with incomplete data.
Practice problem: week-over-week on-time report
pythonAn Amazon Logistics BA sends a weekly on-time delivery report. Each row is (week, station, packages, on_time), and a station can have several rows in a week. Write wow_report(rows, threshold_pp) that, for the latest week in the data, returns one tuple per station: (station, on-time rate in percent rounded to 1 decimal, change in percentage points versus the previous week rounded to 1 decimal or None if the station had no packages that week, flagged), sorted by station. flagged is True when the rate fell by threshold_pp points or more. Skip stations with no packages in the latest week, return [] for no rows, and raise ValueError if on_time is negative or above packages. Example: rows [(41, "BNA1", 1000, 950), (41, "SEA2", 800, 720), (42, "BNA1", 1200, 1080), (42, "SEA2", 500, 460), (42, "AUS3", 300, 285)] with threshold 2.0 return [("AUS3", 95.0, None, False), ("BNA1", 90.0, -5.0, True), ("SEA2", 92.0, 2.0, False)].

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Amazon loop, most important first:
- Prepare two or three stories per Leadership Principle with metrics, covering risk, success, failure and growth. Every interviewer asks these.
- Practice SQL by hand: joins and how filters change them, GROUP BY, CTEs, window functions such as RANK and LAG, and date ranges.
- Practice open-ended metric cases: a metric moved, find out why, size it and recommend an action.
- Refresh Excel: pivot tables, lookups, Power Query and a simple VBA macro, since postings ask for 5+ years of it.
- Read the posting's team (FBA, Logistics, Whole Foods, AWS and others) and prepare a view on the metrics that team runs on.
- Ask your recruiter whether there is an online assessment, whether the screens include SQL, how many loop interviews to expect and what the rules on AI tools are.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rounds is the Amazon business analyst interview?
Amazon publishes no BA loop. Its general process is an online assessment for some roles, one or two phone screens and a loop with two to seven interviewers. Candidate reports describe four to six loop rounds, and one guide describes three, so confirm the count with your recruiter.
Is there SQL in the Amazon business analyst interview?
Nearly every BA posting asks for SQL, and candidate reports describe SQL in the phone screen and sometimes in the loop: joins, CTEs, window functions, GROUP BY and subqueries. One guide says the shared editor does not run queries, so practice writing correct SQL without running it.
Can I use AI tools in an Amazon business analyst interview?
Amazon does not publish a candidate AI rule on its careers pages; ask your recruiter. Its assessments page says "All assessments must be completed solely by the applicant." A March 2025 news report described internal guidance asking candidates not to use generative AI tools during interviews unless explicitly permitted, and said breaking it may lead to disqualification. Amazon has not published that as a rule.
How much do Amazon business analysts make?
In US postings seen in October 2026, Business Analyst lists $66.9K to $130.1K base depending on city, Business Analyst II up to $143.1K in New York, and Senior Business Analyst and Business Analyst III up to $160K. Postings say the package also includes sign-on payments and RSUs.
Is an Amazon business analyst job remote?
No. All US BA postings we read list the location type as on-site, in cities such as Seattle, Bellevue, Nashville, Austin, New York and Arlington.
How is an Amazon BA different from a BIE?
BIE postings ask for data modeling, warehousing, ETL pipelines and Python scripting, and Amazon publishes a BIE prep page with an online assessment and a five-interview loop. BA postings center on Excel, SQL, reporting and business recommendations, and have no prep page of their own.
Does Amazon hire business analyst interns?
Yes. The Business Analyst Intern, Summer 2027 posting is a 12-week, 40-hour-a-week internship in Bellevue for bachelor's students graduating between December 2027 and June 2028. It requires SQL, offers no visa sponsorship and lists $80.2K annualized starting pay.
