Shopify Software Engineer Interview Guide

The short answer: Shopify's careers FAQ describes a short recruiter call, after which R&D applicants go straight to pair programming and the Life Story, a conversation about your career journey. Its only engineering interview guide, a July 2022 post, adds a coding exercise and a technical deep dive on a real project; current loops may differ from it. 2026 postings say you bring your own IDE to a live pair programming session and that Shopify aims to finish the loop within 30 days. Candidate reports say both coding rounds now let you use your own AI tools. Last reviewed October 2026.

Shopify software engineer interview: quick answers

QuestionShort answer
How many interview rounds?Shopify's FAQ and its 2022 guide describe a recruiter call, the Life Story, a coding exercise, pair programming and a technical deep dive. Candidate reports describe a coding screen and an onsite of about 3 to 4 hours, with system design only for senior and staff roles.
What do the rounds test? The 2022 guide says pair programming is judged on communication, edge cases, scalability, limitations and testability, and the Life Story on Impact, Readiness, Trust, Engagement and Self-awareness. Candidate reports describe practical build-and-extend problems instead of puzzles.
Can I use AI tools? No shopify.com page states a rule on AI in interviews. Shopify's VP of Engineering, Farhan Thawar, said in a July 2025 podcast interview that Shopify allows and encourages AI copilots in its interviews. Treat that as his public statement and confirm with your recruiter.
Which tools are used?Postings say to come prepared with your own IDE for the live pair programming session. The 2022 guide says you can use any language unless told otherwise, and the deep dive runs on Google Meet.
How long does it take?Postings say to be ready to interview within the week and that Shopify aims to finish the whole loop within 30 days. A 2026 candidate guide cites 3 to 4 months from application to decision, so sources disagree.
What does it pay?Shopify's software engineer postings print no US pay range. Its FAQ says Flex Comp lets you choose, and later change, your mix of base salary and equity.

A Week in the Life of a Shopify Software Engineer

Illustrative mid-level week · Shopify

An illustrative week for a mid-level engineer, built from practices Shopify describes in its own publications and job postings. Real weeks vary a lot by team.

Culture notes

  • Authors ship their own code: no release managers or release windows, and the author fixes forward or reverts. Shopify described this in 2020.
  • Postings describe a pace measured in the week, not the quarter, and engineers may work with CEO Tobi Lütke, who still codes.
  • Reflexive AI use is part of the job: postings ask engineers to put AI agents to work, and mobile engineers are expected to use many agents at once.

Key takeaway: Expect to ship small changes daily behind flags, own your own rollbacks and use AI tools as a normal part of the work.

Shopify software engineer levels and pay

Your level sets the bar you are interviewed against and the pay band of the offer.

Shopify Software Engineer Levels

Each level has different expectations, compensation, and interview focus.

What This Level Looks Like

4-month paid internships for students, recent grads and early-career people, and a 3 to 4 year work-and-study degree program.

Interview Focus at This Level

Shopify does not describe a separate new grad software engineer program.

Find your level

Practice with questions tailored to your target level.

Start Practicing

Shopify does not publish its engineering ladder. Current postings use Software Engineer, Staff Software Engineer and Senior Staff Engineer; third-party pay data uses Developer titles and level numbers that Shopify has not confirmed, so the table uses posting titles. Postings print no pay.

Shopify software engineer interview process

The steps below combine Shopify's careers FAQ, its 2026 postings and its July 2022 interview guide. The current coding format, the onsite length and the system design round come from candidate reports.

Tips for this round

  • Have a short answer to why Shopify and why this team.
  • Ask which rounds allow AI tools and which IDE setup to bring.

Pair programming

90mRemote pair programming in your own IDE

You drive in your own editor and language while a Shopify developer observes. The 2022 guide judges communication, edge cases, scalability, limitations and testability. Candidate guides describe this as a second AI-assisted coding round in current loops.

codingsystem_design

Tips for this round

  • Talk through your reasoning and ask your partner questions as you go.
  • Cover edge cases and tests, and expect new requirements that extend your design.
  • Prefer a clean, partial solution to a rushed, messy one.

Tips to Stand Out

  • For the Life Story, reflect on your past decisions and lessons beforehand and take the call somewhere quiet. Shopify says it hires people, not resumes.
  • In pair programming, share your screen with line numbers on, narrate your reasoning, ask your partner questions and admit what you do not know.
  • A considered, incomplete solution beats a sloppy finished one, according to the 2022 guide.
  • In coding, clarify first and run your code early and often. Documentation and search are fine; looking up ready-made solutions is not.
  • For the deep dive, pick one or two real work projects tied to the role, not side projects, and pause for questions.
  • Come with your own IDE set up for the live pair programming session, as postings ask.

Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass

  • ✗Candidates report being cut after the Life Story call, which they read as a fit mismatch rather than a technical miss.
  • ✗Candidate reports tie pair programming rejections to working heads-down instead of collaborating, missing tests and slow progress.
  • ✗Shopify's 2022 guide says a sloppy, rushed finished solution scores worse than a well-reasoned incomplete one.
  • ✗Candidate guides say prompting before planning, letting the AI make design decisions and leaving messy AI code are weak signals.

Based on Shopify's own pages and candidate reports.

Postings say Shopify aims to finish the loop within 30 days, while a 2026 candidate guide cites 3 to 4 months from application to decision. Shopify's FAQ says the hiring team meets and decides from the feedback of team members of varying seniority. Last reviewed October 2026.

What is different at Shopify

  • AI in the coding rounds. Postings ask candidates to put AI agents and tools to work on the tasks they suit, and candidate guides say you bring your own IDE and AI tools, then direct, review and clean up what the AI writes. Shopify's VP of Engineering has said candidates without a copilot are usually outperformed.
  • The Life Story. A recruiter-led conversation about your whole journey, which the 2022 guide scores on traits such as Impact and Self-awareness. Candidates report it can end the process.
  • Build-and-extend problems. Candidate guides describe practical problems with layered requirements and possible concurrency follow-ups.
  • A 30-day target. Postings ask you to be ready to interview within the week and say Shopify aims to finish the loop within 30 days.
  • Leaders code too. Leadership roles add team-specific interviews, and directors and above also take a pair programming interview, according to Shopify's 2022 guide and a 2025 interview with its VP of Engineering.
  • No posted pay. Postings print no US pay range, and Flex Comp lets you pick and later change your mix of base salary and equity.

System design practice

Practice prompts we wrote around Shopify's products. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline of what a strong answer covers.

Design checkout so it stays up during a flash sale where one shop gets a huge traffic spike.

MediumSystem design

Sample Answer

Clarify the spike size, inventory rules (no overselling) and which steps can be deferred, such as emails and analytics. Shard data by shop so one hot shop does not slow others, put a queue or throttle in front of checkout for that shop, and reserve inventory with an atomic decrement. Push non-critical work to background jobs and cache product pages aggressively. Discuss what happens to a buyer whose payment succeeds but whose order write fails. A strong answer covers load testing before the sale and avoids a single global inventory lock.

Fundamentals practice

Concept questions on the topics Shopify's rounds lean on, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.

Why shard a commerce database by shop, and what does it cost you?

MediumFundamentals

Sample Answer

Most queries touch one shop, so putting all of a shop's rows on one shard keeps queries local and lets you add shards as shops grow. The costs are cross-shop queries, which need fan-out or a separate analytics store, and hot shops that can overload one shard. Moving a shop between shards needs a careful copy and cutover.

Behavioral practice

Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral rounds. They are not reported interview questions.

Walk me through a career decision you made and why.

Sample Answer

Shopify's Life Story looks at your journey and decisions. Explain the options, what you valued at the time, and how it turned out.

Practice problem: inventory reservations

python

A store starts with stock levels, a dict of sku to quantity on hand. Process a list of operations and return a list of booleans, one per operation. ("reserve", order_id, items) holds every sku in items (a dict of sku to quantity) for the order, all or nothing. It succeeds only if items is not empty, every quantity is positive, the order does not already hold a reservation, and on-hand stock minus already reserved stock covers each quantity. ("cancel", order_id) releases a held reservation. ("fulfill", order_id) ships it, reducing on-hand stock. Cancel and fulfill return False if the order holds nothing. Example: stock {'mug': 3}, ops [('reserve', 'o1', {'mug': 2}), ('reserve', 'o2', {'mug': 2}), ('cancel', 'o1'), ('reserve', 'o2', {'mug': 2}), ('fulfill', 'o2')] returns [True, False, True, True, True].

Python
1from typing import Dict, List, Tuple
2
3def process(stock: Dict[str, int], ops: List[Tuple]) -> List[bool]:
4 """Apply reserve, cancel and fulfill operations; return whether each succeeded."""
5 pass

Practice in the Engine

How to prepare

A plan for the Shopify loop, most important first:

  1. Practice build-and-extend problems in your own IDE: write a small in-memory system, then add requirements and a concurrency follow-up.
  2. Rehearse coding with your AI tool the way candidate guides describe: plan first, let the AI write routine code, then review and clean up every line.
  3. Write out your Life Story: key decisions, challenges and lessons, mapped to Impact, Readiness, Trust, Engagement and Self-awareness.
  4. Pick one or two real work projects for the deep dive and prepare their business impact, architecture, trade-offs and failures.
  5. If you are senior or staff, practice operations-flavored system design for commerce: checkout, inventory, shipping and flags.
  6. Ask your recruiter which rounds allow AI tools, what IDE setup to bring and when each round is, since postings aim for a 30-day loop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds is the Shopify software engineer interview?

Shopify's FAQ describes a 15 to 30 minute recruiter call, then pair programming and the Life Story for R&D applicants. Its July 2022 guide adds a coding exercise and a technical deep dive. Candidate reports describe a coding screen and a 3 to 4 hour onsite, with system design only for senior and staff roles.

What is the Shopify Life Story interview?

A recruiter-led video conversation of 30 to 60 minutes about your personal and career journey: decisions, challenges and lessons. Shopify's 2022 guide says it is assessed on Impact, Readiness, Trust, Engagement and Self-awareness, and suggests reflecting on your past beforehand.

Can I use AI in a Shopify interview?

No shopify.com page states a rule on AI in interviews. Shopify's VP of Engineering, Farhan Thawar, said in a July 2025 podcast interview that Shopify allows and encourages AI copilots in its interviews and asks candidates to judge the AI's code. Candidate guides say both coding rounds are AI-enabled. Treat this as his public statement and confirm with your recruiter before the interview. Separately, postings say Shopify may use AI-enabled tools to screen and assess applications, with recruiters reviewing every AI output.

How much do Shopify software engineers make?

Shopify does not post US pay ranges. All 8 software engineer postings we checked on October 27, 2026 were Remote - Americas with no salary shown, so this guide has no pay table. Shopify's FAQ says Flex Comp lets you choose, and later change, your mix of base salary and equity (RSUs and options).

What are the software engineer levels at Shopify?

Shopify does not publish a ladder. Postings use Software Engineer, Staff Software Engineer and Senior Staff Engineer. For early careers, Shopify runs 4-month paid engineering internships and Dev Degree, a 3 to 4 year work-and-study computer science program.

Can Shopify engineers work remotely?

Yes. Every software engineer posting we saw in October 2026 was Remote - Americas, and postings ask candidates to work digital-first.

Can I reapply to Shopify after a rejection?

Shopify's FAQ limits you to 2 applications per 30 days and asks engineering applicants to wait 6 to 12 months before reapplying to the same role.
