Databricks Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Guide

The short answer: Databricks publishes one general interview process for all roles: a recruiter call, a pre-onsite screen, and an onsite loop of typically four to six interviews, held virtually on Google Meet. It does not publish an FDE-specific loop. Candidate reports for forward deployed engineers describe a technical screen, a practical coding round in a notebook, a decomposition round that starts from a vague business goal, and leadership rounds mapped to Databricks' six culture principles. One candidate guide adds an architecture or ML system design deep dive and, mainly for senior candidates, an executive round. Last reviewed October 2026.

A Week in the Life of a Databricks Forward Deployed Engineer

Illustrative week · Databricks

An illustrative week for a forward deployed engineer, built from what Databricks says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary a lot by customer.

Culture notes

  • Databricks lists six culture principles: Customer Obsessed, Raise the Bar, Truth Seeking, Operate from First Principles, Bias for Action and Put the Company First. Candidate reports say the leadership rounds map to them.
  • FDE work is measured like a services business. Delivery KPIs for FDE teams include bookings, revenue, margin, CSAT and Databricks consumption (DBUs).
  • The AI FDE team hires for strong, unique specializations and expects members to present at conferences such as Data + AI Summit.

Key takeaway: Expect a billable, customer-embedded week: scoping with a Deployment Strategist, building on the Lakehouse, and turning what you build into something other accounts can reuse.

Start Practicing

Databricks does not publish an FDE level ladder. US postings use the titles Forward Deployed Engineer and Sr. Forward Deployed Engineer, and the US AI FDE posting covers all levels in one requisition. An India posting titles Senior FDE as L5, and Staff and Sr. Staff FDE postings exist only outside the US. Two candidate reports describe entry-level L3 FDE loops, although the US AI FDE posting excludes entry-level applicants.

Pay in Databricks's US job postings

Databricks' US FDE postings list a base salary range. Every range says total compensation may also include an annual bonus and equity.

Rows use posting titles. The same Sr. FDE range appears in every US pay zone and every US vertical posting. Deployment Strategist rows are left out because it is the scoping role on the FDE team: Deployment Strategist lists $182,000 to $250,208 and Sr. Deployment Strategist, Financial Services lists $219,765 to $302,220. Ranges seen October 28, 2026.

Databricks says the recruiter call is the first stage for all roles. Candidate reports say it covers location, level, why Databricks, why FDE, client-facing experience, Databricks projects you have worked on and your languages.

generalbehavioral

Tips for this round

  • Have a specific answer to what you know about Databricks and which products you have used.
  • Explain why FDE, with an example of client-facing work you owned.
  • Ask which track you are interviewing for (FDE or AI FDE) and the AI rule for each round.

Candidate reports describe easy to medium data manipulation with dicts, strings and lists, judged on clean working code, clarifying inputs and outputs, and narrating your approach. Reports say it is not hard algorithm-puzzle coding. One candidate guide reports later coding rounds where AI assistant use is expected.

coding

Tips for this round

  • Clarify inputs and outputs before you write code.
  • Narrate your approach and keep the code clean; reports say the problems are practical, not puzzles.
  • If AI assistance is allowed, read and test every line it writes.

References and decision

References, then a decision

Databricks' seven-step hiring flow ends with reference checks, then a decision and offer. One candidate guide says the FDE decision goes through a hiring committee and senior leadership review.

general

Tips for this round

  • Pick references who saw you work with customers.
  • Ask your recruiter when to expect feedback; Databricks targets 48 hours after the final interview.

Tips to Stand Out

  • Prepare real examples. Databricks says behavioral questions often start with "Tell me about a time" or "Describe a situation".
  • Learn the six culture principles and have a story for each. Databricks publishes them on its culture page.
  • Pick one language and be fluent in it. Databricks says its engineering interviews are language agnostic, and its engineering guide suggests practicing in the shared coding environment, where architecture rounds may use a drawing tool.
  • In project discussions, explain the technical depth and skip employer-specific jargon, as the engineering guide advises.
  • Test your audio, camera and screen sharing before each virtual interview. Databricks also says not to bring trade secrets or confidential material from current or past employers.
  • Candidate reports say to open the decomposition round by asking who the stakeholder and end user are and what KPI matters before you draw any architecture.

Common Reasons Candidates Don't Pass

  • ✗A candidate guide says low product familiarity and little visible interest in the role is a common mistake.
  • ✗One senior candidate report describes a rejection right after a recruiter screen in which they could not say what they knew about Databricks.
  • ✗A candidate guide says weak handling of customer conflict in the behavioral rounds leads to rejections.
  • ✗A candidate guide cites one candidate who passed the technical loop but failed the executive round, twice.

Based on Databricks's own pages and candidate reports.

Databricks says the typical timeline is two to three months and it targets feedback within 48 hours of the final interview. An FDE manager posting says managers hire with structured interviews, practical delivery scenarios, scorecards and interview calibration, and FDE candidate reports describe about one month to 1.5 months, fully remote. Last reviewed October 2026.

What is different at Databricks

  • FDEs are billable professional services engineers. Databricks launched a formal FDE organization in June 2026 that brought its Professional Services org under one roof. Engagements are scoped through Statements of Work, tied to shared OKRs, may be co-delivered with partners, and are increasingly priced on outcomes. Named customers include JPMorgan Chase, Fox Corporation and Qualcomm.
  • The FDE team has two halves. The Deployment Strategist is the scoping half: it owns the why and what (discovery, value scoping, the PRD, the backlog and the launch), and the FDE engineers own the how. The Sr. Deployment Strategist posting asks for proficiency in a language such as Python, Java or SQL, but the core job is scoping and delivery management. Engagement Managers and Technical Program Managers in the FDE org are program roles, and Delivery Solutions Architect is a separate architecture role outside billable delivery.
  • Most US Sr. FDE postings are organized by industry: financial services, healthcare and life sciences, manufacturing, retail, media and games, digital natives, public sector and national security. About 103 FDE and Deployment Strategist postings were open on October 28, 2026. Public sector and national security roles require US citizenship and eligibility for a secret clearance.
  • There is a separate GenAI track. AI FDEs build GenAI applications (RAG, multi-agent systems, Text2SQL, fine-tuning) and own production rollouts. The AI FDE team calls itself an ensemble of people with strong, unique specializations and expects members to present at conferences such as Data + AI Summit. One candidate guide says AI FDE and FDE are different roles with a similar interview process.
  • Candidate reports call the decomposition round the most distinctive FDE round. It plays like a first meeting with a client: you start from a vague goal and are judged on how you find the stakeholder, the user and the KPI before you design anything.
  • Databricks does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews. One candidate guide says a coding round expected an LLM or the Databricks Assistant after you set up the workspace by hand, with you vetting the generated code, and that some candidates were discouraged from coding manually. That is unverified, so ask your recruiter for each round.

Customer scoping practice

Vague customer problems we wrote around Databricks's products, to scope into a first build. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline.

A retail customer says: "We want to use AI on our sales data." Scope a first build.

MediumDecomposition

Sample Answer

Ask who is asking (merchandising, finance or store operations), what decision they want to make better, and what data already lands in the Lakehouse. Push for one measurable goal, such as cutting stockouts on top items. Cut scope to one region and one product category. A first build could be a clean sales and inventory table set plus a simple demand forecast, with a natural-language view for planners. Measure stockout rate and forecast error against the current process. A strong answer avoids starting with a model before the data and the decision are clear.

AI system design practice

Design prompts we wrote for Databricks's kind of customers. Each answer outlines what a strong design covers.

Design a RAG assistant on Databricks for a financial services customer's internal policy documents.

MediumSystem design

Sample Answer

Clarify users, document volume, update frequency and compliance needs. Land documents in governed tables, chunk and embed them on a schedule, and index them in a vector search service such as AI Search. Serve the LLM through Model Serving with retrieval, citations and a refusal path when retrieval finds nothing. Enforce document permissions at retrieval time. Build an evaluation set with the customer and track answer quality, latency and cost per question. Roll out to one team first and log every answer for review.

Fundamentals practice

Concept questions on what Databricks's forward deployed engineers work with, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.

What is a medallion architecture, and why use it?

MediumFundamentals

Sample Answer

Data moves through layers: raw data as it arrived (bronze), cleaned and conformed data (silver), and business-level aggregates (gold). Each layer has a clear contract, so you can reprocess from raw when logic changes, debug where a number went wrong, and give different users the layer they need. The cost is more storage and more pipelines to run.

Behavioral practice

Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral and customer rounds. They are not reported interview questions.

Tell me about a time a customer pushed back on your recommendation.

MediumBehavioral

Sample Answer

Databricks lists Customer Obsessed as a culture principle, and candidate reports say these rounds probe customer conflict. Explain what you recommended, why the customer disagreed, how you used data to resolve it, and what you did if they still chose their way.

Practice more behavioral questions

Practice problem: apply change records to a customer table

python

A customer system sends change records as dicts with keys "id", "op", "ts" and "data". op is "upsert" or "delete". Records can arrive out of order. Apply them in ts order (for equal ts, keep input order) and return the final table as a list of (id, row) pairs sorted by id. An upsert merges its data fields into the existing row, or creates the row if none exists. A field whose value is None is removed from the row. A delete removes the row, and a later upsert starts a fresh row. Raise ValueError for any other op. Example: [{"id": "a", "op": "upsert", "ts": 2, "data": {"tier": "gold"}}, {"id": "a", "op": "upsert", "ts": 1, "data": {"name": "Ada", "tier": "silver"}}] returns [("a", {"name": "Ada", "tier": "gold"})], because the ts 1 record is applied first.

Practice in the Engine

How to prepare

A plan for the Databricks loop, most important first:

  1. Practice decomposition: take a vague business goal, find the stakeholder, user and KPI, then sketch the app, data and ML layers in under an hour.
  2. Practice easy to medium data manipulation in Python (dicts, strings, lists) in a notebook, narrating as you go.
  3. Write a STAR story for each of the six Databricks culture principles, with at least two on customer conflict.
  4. Learn the Databricks products named in FDE work (Lakehouse, Apps, Genie, Lakebase, AI Search, Model Serving) well enough to say which you would use and why.
  5. Review SQL, Spark basics including skew, and medallion, streaming and governance patterns for the design rounds.
  6. Ask your recruiter whether you are on the FDE or AI FDE track and what the AI rule is for each round.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds is the Databricks forward deployed engineer interview?

Databricks publishes its general process only: a recruiter call, a pre-onsite screen and an onsite loop of typically four to six interviews. One US candidate described five FDE stages (recruiter, technical screen, coding, decomposition, leadership) and got an offer. One AI FDE candidate reported six rounds over about 1.5 months. One candidate guide adds a hiring manager conversation, a system design deep dive and an executive round.

Can I use AI tools in a Databricks FDE interview?

Databricks does not publish a rule on AI use in interviews; ask your recruiter. One candidate guide, citing candidate reports, says a coding round expected use of an LLM or the Databricks Assistant, with the candidate vetting the generated code. That is unverified. Databricks does say not to bring confidential material from current or past employers, and not to use your current work computer to make anything for Databricks.

How much do Databricks forward deployed engineers make?

US postings seen on October 28, 2026 list a base range of $182,000 to $250,208 for Sr. Forward Deployed Engineer (the same range on all 58 US Sr. FDE postings) and for AI FDE, and $152,900 to $210,155 for the US Public Sector FDE posting. Databricks says total pay may include an annual bonus and equity.

Is the Databricks FDE coding round hard?

Candidate reports describe easy to medium practical problems in a notebook: data manipulation with dicts, strings and lists, judged on clean working code and clear narration. Reports disagree on the technical screen: one describes rapid-fire short questions, and one candidate guide describes pair coding to a written spec with debugging. Databricks says its engineering interviews are language agnostic but expect fluency in your chosen language.

What is the difference between a Databricks FDE and a Deployment Strategist?

Both sit on the FDE team. The Deployment Strategist is the product manager for the customer problem: discovery, value scoping, PRDs, the backlog and delivery. FDE engineers own the build. Deployment Strategist postings list up to 50% travel; US base ranges are $182,000 to $250,208 for Deployment Strategist and $219,765 to $302,220 for Sr. Deployment Strategist, Financial Services. One candidate guide says Databricks began converting Resident Solutions Architect roles into FDE roles in early 2026; no official source confirms it.

Do Databricks FDEs work remotely?

Mostly remote or hybrid with customer travel. US Sr. FDE postings say about 20% travel, public sector and national security roles say 20 to 25% and hybrid, and the AI FDE posting says about once every 4 to 8 weeks. The Digital Native Business role is Bay Area focused (based there or there one week a month), and federal roles sit in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area.

Does Databricks hire entry-level forward deployed engineers?

Unclear. US Sr. FDE postings ask for 6+ years and the US Public Sector FDE posting asks for 5+. The US AI FDE posting is labeled all levels but excludes interns, new grads and entry-level applicants. Two candidate reports describe entry-level L3 FDE loops in the US and the Netherlands.
