Salesforce Forward Deployed Engineer Interview Guide

The short answer: Salesforce does not publish an interview process for its forward deployed engineers. Its How We Hire page says most interviews are virtual and on camera, and that an on-site interview at a Salesforce office is required before an offer. Candidate reports and guides describe about four rounds: a recruiter screen, a hiring manager round on your AI project experience, a technical round on designing Agentforce agents and integrations, and a customer scenario panel with behavioral questions. Some candidates also report an online coding assessment, and one said the onsite felt more like consulting than a technical interview. Last reviewed October 2026.

Salesforce forward deployed engineer interview: quick answers

QuestionShort answer
How many interview rounds?Salesforce does not publish an FDE round count. Candidate guides describe about four rounds but disagree on what they cover, and one candidate report mentions an online coding assessment. Salesforce requires an on-site interview at an office before any offer.
What do the rounds test?Candidate reports describe your past AI projects and their challenges, designing an Agentforce agent for a business process, integrating Salesforce with outside systems, and a customer scenario or mock client meeting.
Can I use AI tools?Only if your interviewer asks you to for an exercise. Salesforce's candidate tips say not to use AI tools in the interview itself, to ask your recruiter about the formal accommodation process if you need AI for accessibility, and not to record or transcribe interviews. Using AI to prepare your application is fine if the content is accurate and truthful.
How much do Salesforce FDEs make? The main US FDE posting lists base salary of $88,970 to $287,910 in typical US locations and $97,860 to $316,750 in premium metros, one range for mid and senior levels. Salesforce says bonus, incentives and equity are separate from that range.
How long is an FDE engagement?Salesforce says pods of two FDEs and one Deployment Strategist work full-time with one customer for about three months, or until one or two use cases are deployed.
How long does the process take?Salesforce does not publish a timeline for this role, and the candidate sources we read do not give one.

A Week in the Life of a Salesforce Forward Deployed Engineer

Illustrative week · Salesforce

An illustrative week for a forward deployed engineer, built from what Salesforce says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary a lot by customer.

Culture notes

  • Salesforce launched its FDE team in April 2025 and has committed to building a team of 1,000 FDEs.
  • New hires can join Ready in Six, a six-week onboarding program with technical training, field work and a capstone.
  • Field feedback reaches the roadmap. One leader cites a feature that FDE feedback pulled forward six months.

Key takeaway: Expect a pod week inside one customer's Salesforce org, building agents and data pipelines quickly and leaving the customer team able to run them.

Salesforce does not publish one FDE ladder. The main FDE team posts Associate, mid, Senior, Lead, Distinguished and Expert Agent Builder titles, and the main US req covers mid and senior levels in one range. AI Labs Forward Deployment Engineers use the engineering ladder: MTS asks for 2+ years and LMTS for 8+.

Pay in Salesforce's US job postings

Salesforce's US FDE postings list base salary ranges for two location tiers. Salesforce says the range covers base pay only and excludes bonus, sales incentives and equity, and that some roles may be eligible for incentive pay, equity and benefits.

Technical round: agent design and coding

Agent design and coding

Designing an agent for a business process, with order returns and lead qualification given as examples, and integrating Salesforce with outside systems. One guide instead lists a platform and Apex screen, an Agentforce design round and a separate integration and architecture round.

system_designdecompositioncoding

Tips for this round

  • Walk through the business process before the agent: who starts it, what data it needs, where a person must decide.
  • Cover how the agent reaches outside systems, including authentication and failure handling.
  • Know the basics of Agentforce and Data 360 from Trailhead before this round.

Tips to Stand Out

  • Map your experience to each qualification in the posting before the interview. Salesforce says to review the job description this way.
  • Prepare STAR stories for behavioral, competency-based and situational questions, which Salesforce says to expect.
  • Learn the products you would deploy on Trailhead, starting with Agentforce and Data 360. Salesforce suggests Trailhead for learning its business.
  • Keep your camera on, research your interviewers, rehearse any presentation and ask how the team uses AI. Salesforce lists all of these in its candidate tips.
  • Explain your reasoning out loud in technical screens. For a project test, Salesforce says to write your assumptions in the notes, and that you may download the project and run tests locally without penalty.
  • Do not record or transcribe your interviews, even with built-in AI features. Salesforce asks this for privacy and fairness.

Based on Salesforce's own pages and candidate reports.

Candidate guides claim the customer-facing rounds usually decide offers, which Salesforce has not confirmed. Salesforce says people make all hiring decisions, and asks candidates to apply to no more than three roles within 12 months. Last reviewed October 2026.

What is different at Salesforce

  • FDEs work in pods of two FDEs and one Deployment Strategist. The strategist picks the use case and AI strategy and owns program management and adoption. The FDEs are the technical architects and primary coders. Forward Deployed Process Consultant is a consulting role, and Principal AI Solutions Engineer in AI Labs is a presales role filed under Sales.
  • Engagements are short and full-time. Salesforce says a pod stays with one customer for about three months, or until one or two use cases are deployed, and customers are nominated by their account executive for the free Momentum program. Deployment Strategist postings describe engagements of 12 weeks or less.
  • FDEs deploy Salesforce's own platform: Agentforce, Data 360, Agentforce Operations and MuleSoft integrations. Salesforce says FDEs bring internal product knowledge that implementation partners may lack, and one leader cites a feature that FDE field feedback pulled forward six months.
  • There are several FDE orgs. The main FDE req is filed under Sales, while the Missionforce public sector team and the AI Labs Forward Deployment Engineers are filed under Software Engineering and use different ladders. Missionforce Senior and Lead roles require an active Secret or Top Secret clearance and US citizenship without dual citizenship.
  • Travel varies by team. The main FDE posting says about 25%, Agentforce Orchestration 25 to 30%, Expert Agent Builder 30% and Missionforce 25 to 50%. The public sector data science lead travels 50 to 75%, including to classified facilities, and AI Labs about 40 to 60%. Many US FDE locations are listed as remote.
  • The job and the interview treat AI differently. Postings say FDEs use AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude and Salesforce's Vibes every day. Salesforce's candidate tips say not to use AI tools in the interview unless your interviewer prompts you for an exercise.

Customer scoping practice

Vague customer problems we wrote around Salesforce's products, to scope into a first build. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline.

A global recruitment company wants an Agentforce agent to take over initial candidate screening. Scope the first build.

MediumDecomposition

Sample Answer

Clarify the job families and volume, what screening means today, where candidate data lives, and which decisions a recruiter must keep. Cut scope to one job family in one region. The agent gathers answers and books interviews, and the recruiter makes every pass or fail call. Ship it on the channel candidates already use, writing structured results into Salesforce. Measure recruiter hours saved, time to first contact, candidate drop-off and agreement with recruiter decisions on a sample. A strong answer keeps rejections with people in the first version and plans a bias review.

AI system design practice

Design prompts we wrote for Salesforce's kind of customers. Each answer outlines what a strong design covers.

Design an Agentforce service agent for a telecom company that answers billing questions and can issue small credits.

MediumSystem design

Sample Answer

Ground the agent on the unified customer profile in Data 360 and on billing data through MuleSoft or REST APIs. Use retrieval with vector search over billing policy documents. The credit action calls the billing API through an integration user with OAuth and the narrowest permissions, with a per-credit cap and human approval above it. Add guardrails that keep the agent on billing topics and out of other customers' data. Test in a sandbox with edge-case data, then roll out to a share of contacts with KPIs such as resolution rate, credits issued and escalations.

Fundamentals practice

Concept questions on what Salesforce's forward deployed engineers work with, with short model answers. We wrote these for practice.

What is retrieval-augmented generation, and why do agents grounded on company data need it?

MediumFundamentals

Sample Answer

RAG retrieves relevant records or documents at question time and puts them in the prompt, so the model answers from current company data instead of its training data. It keeps answers fresh without retraining and lets the agent cite sources. Quality depends on retrieval, so test retrieval separately from the final answers.

Behavioral practice

Practice prompts we wrote for the behavioral and customer rounds. They are not reported interview questions.

Tell me about an AI project that ran into trouble and what you did.

Sample Answer

Candidate reports say an early round asks about challenges in past AI projects. Name the problem plainly, what you tried, what worked and what you would do differently.

Practice problem: merge customer records into unified profiles

python

Each record is (record_id, keys), where keys is a list of match-key strings from source systems, such as loyalty or account IDs. Normalize each key by stripping spaces and converting to upper case, and ignore keys that are empty after that. Two records belong to the same profile if they share a normalized key, directly or through other records. Return the profiles as lists of record ids, each list sorted, and the lists sorted by their first id. Raise ValueError on a duplicate record_id. Example: [("crm:01", ["LOY-100", " acct-7 "]), ("erp:05", ["ACCT-7"]), ("web:09", ["loy-555"]), ("crm:02", ["LOY-555", ""])] returns [["crm:01", "erp:05"], ["crm:02", "web:09"]].

How to prepare

A plan for the Salesforce loop, most important first:

  1. Learn Agentforce and Data 360 on Trailhead, then practice designing an agent for a business process end to end: prompts, reasoning, tool calls and integrations.
  2. Prepare stories about two AI projects you built, including the challenges and how you handled them.
  3. Practice a mock client meeting: scope a vague request with a skeptical stakeholder in 30 minutes.
  4. Practice integration design with REST APIs, OAuth and an ERP such as SAP, including failure handling.
  5. Prepare for an online coding assessment in Python, JavaScript or Java with timed, project-style tasks.
  6. Read Salesforce's candidate tips on AI and recording, and confirm the rules for each round with your recruiter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many rounds is the Salesforce forward deployed engineer interview?

Salesforce does not publish a round count for FDEs. Candidate guides describe about four rounds, such as a recruiter screen, a hiring manager round, an Agentforce technical round and a customer scenario panel, but another guide lists a platform and Apex screen and a separate integration round. One candidate report also mentions an online coding assessment. Salesforce requires an on-site interview at an office before an offer.

Can I use AI tools in a Salesforce interview?

Not unless your interviewer asks you to for an exercise. Salesforce's candidate tips say not to use AI tools during the interview, to ask your recruiter about the formal accommodation process if you need AI for accessibility, and not to record or transcribe interviews regardless of AI features. AI is fine for preparing a cover letter or application if the content is accurate and truthful. Salesforce also says AI helps recruiters assess resumes, people make all hiring decisions, and you can opt out.

How much do Salesforce forward deployed engineers make?

Salesforce's US postings seen in October 2026 list base salary of $88,970 to $287,910 for the main FDE req in typical US locations and $97,860 to $316,750 in premium metros, the same ranges as the Public Sector, Orchestration and Data 360 FDE postings. Expert Agent Builder lists $157,640 to $316,750 across both tiers. Missionforce lists $96,300 to $176,700 for Associate and $148,500 to $365,200 for Senior/Lead. Bonus, incentives and equity are separate.

Do Salesforce FDEs travel or work remotely?

Both. Many US FDE locations are listed as remote, and pods sometimes embed at the customer. The main FDE posting lists about 25% travel. Other FDE teams list 25 to 75%, and the AI Labs role about 40 to 60% with several days on site at a time.

How is an FDE different from a Deployment Strategist at Salesforce?

They work in the same pod. The Deployment Strategist owns the use case, AI strategy, program management and adoption, and needs only working knowledge of a programming language. The FDEs are the technical architects and write the code. Principal AI Solutions Engineer is a separate presales role.

Do I need Salesforce platform experience to become a Salesforce FDE?

The main posting asks for fluency in Python, JavaScript or TypeScript, Java or Apex, hands-on LLM and prompt engineering, and data modeling and integration design. Salesforce certifications such as Administrator, Platform Developer I and Agentforce Specialist are listed as nice to have. Prior customer-facing technical delivery in consulting, professional services or an FDE role is called a requirement.

What happens after I join as a Salesforce FDE?

New hires can join Ready in Six, a six-week onboarding program with technical training, field work and a capstone. Salesforce describes a career path up to 'FDE Pod Thought Leader', and says FDEs can specialize by industry, lead teams or move teams.
