The short answer: Uber publishes one Sciences interview guide for Data Scientists, Applied Scientists and Scientists. According to Uber, the process is a 30-minute recruiter or sourcer call, 60 minutes of live coding with a team member, a 60-minute Jam Session, then 4 to 6 interviews of 45 minutes each with the team, all on Zoom. Your recruiter tells you which of eight competencies apply, such as Machine Learning, Experimentation/Statistics and Coding. Uber does not describe the Jam Session, and we found no readable candidate report that does. Current postings call the role Scientist II or Senior Scientist on the Applied Science subteam. A Week in the Life of a Uber Applied Scientist
Illustrative week · Uber
An illustrative week for a applied scientist, built from what Uber says about the role in its own job postings and publications. Real weeks vary by team.
Culture notes
- Every candidate is assessed against Uber's values, with example prompts tied to Trip Obsessed and One Uber.
- Most scientists work end to end, owning metrics, experiments and technical solutions.
- Postings require at least 50% of time in the office unless approved for full remote work.
Key takeaway: Expect marketplace science that runs from framing a problem to an experiment readout, often on a model that runs in real time.

Uber does not publish a timeline. It says rescheduling is limited, so keep your scheduled times, and that all steps run on Zoom. If you receive a link to the online coding assessment or a shared coding environment, log in and have it open before the session. Last reviewed October 2026.
What is different at Uber
- One process covers every science title. Uber's Sciences guide is shared by Data Scientist, Applied Scientist and Scientist, and candidates are not assessed on all eight competencies: the recruiter says which apply to your role.
- The titles changed. Uber's guide and older postings say Applied Scientist and Sr Applied Scientist, but newer postings use Scientist II, Senior Scientist and Staff Scientist, with Applied Science or Data Science shown only as the subteam. Check the subteam field to know which track a posting is.
- The process includes a 60-minute Jam Session between live coding and the team interviews. Uber does not describe it, so ask your recruiter what to prepare.
- Applied science at Uber is heavily marketplace work. Postings ask for ML, optimization, causal inference and marketplace-dynamics models, plus experiment design, for teams such as delivery matching, Uber One membership, Maps, Experimentation and Uber Eats pricing.
- Uber says some scientists use data to inform business decisions while others build and deploy models that run systems in real time, and that most work end to end, owning metrics, experiments and technical solutions.
- The AI rule is strict and covers more than AI. Uber says not to use any external assistance, including search engines, documentation sites, collaboration with others, or AI tools.

Uber's DeepETA predicts the residual between the routing engine's ETA and the actual arrival time. Why model the residual instead of the ETA itself?
Sample Answer
The routing engine already captures road graph structure and distance, so the residual is the part it gets wrong: traffic patterns, pickup delays, local quirks. A model on the residual has a smaller, easier target and keeps the routing engine's strengths. It can also fall back to the routing ETA if the model fails. Discuss the loss (ETA errors are not symmetric in cost), latency limits and how to evaluate by city and trip length.
Build a model that predicts whether an Uber Eats order will arrive late.
A payments fraud model reviews 10,000 transactions, of which 100 are fraud. It flags 200 and catches 80 of the frauds. What are precision and recall, and is the model good?
Forecast hourly ride demand by city zone for the next day.

Why can't Uber test a new driver pricing rule with a simple user-level A/B test? What would you do instead?
Sample Answer
Riders and drivers share one marketplace, so treating some drivers changes supply for everyone and the control group is affected too. Randomize by region and time instead: a switchback test flips the whole market between treatment and control in time blocks, or a cluster-randomized test assigns whole areas. Account for carryover between blocks and the smaller effective sample size.
An Uber One signup test shows control converting 2,000 of 50,000 users (4.0%) and treatment 2,200 of 50,000 (4.4%). Is the difference significant?
How many users per group do you need to detect a lift from 20% to 21% with 80% power at a 5% significance level?
Uber launches a feature in one city. Daily orders go from 1,000 to 1,150, while a similar city without the launch goes from 800 to 880. What is the effect?
Coding and SQL practice
Prompts we wrote for this guide around Uber's work. They are not reported interview questions. Each answer is an outline or a worked solution.
Write a SQL query that returns, for each city, the share of trips in the last 7 days that arrived more than 5 minutes after the ETA.
Sample Answer
Filter trips to the last 7 days, then GROUP BY city and take AVG(CASE WHEN actual_minutes - eta_minutes > 5 THEN 1.0 ELSE 0 END). Use 1.0 to avoid integer division. Exclude canceled trips or trips with a missing arrival time, and say so.
Write a SQL query that returns each rider's median number of days between consecutive trips.
Given driver locations and a rider location, return the k nearest available drivers.
Given trips as (start, end) times, return the largest number of trips in progress at the same time.

Tell me about a project that changed how you or your team worked.
Sample Answer
Uber uses this kind of prompt for its Trip Obsessed value. Describe the problem, what you changed, your own role and the measurable result.
Tell me about how you work with teams outside your own.
Walk me through a technical trade-off you made on a model or experiment.
Tell me about a time an experiment result surprised you.
Practice problem: correct routing ETAs with a per-city residual
pythonUber's DeepETA learns the residual between a routing engine's ETA and the actual time. Build a simple version. Write eta_correction_mae(train, test, min_trips). Each trip is (city, routing_eta, actual) in minutes. From train, learn each city's mean residual (actual minus routing_eta) for cities with at least min_trips trips; other cities, and cities missing from train, use the global mean residual over all training trips. Return (mae_before, mae_after) on test, the mean absolute error of routing_eta and of routing_eta plus the residual, each rounded to 2 decimals. Raise ValueError if train or test is empty. Example: train [("sf", 10, 12), ("sf", 20, 23), ("nyc", 15, 15)], test [("sf", 10, 13), ("nyc", 12, 13), ("la", 8, 8)] and min_trips 2 give (1.33, 0.94).

Practice in the EngineHow to prepare
A plan for the Uber loop, most important first:
- Ask your recruiter which of the eight competencies your loop covers and what the Jam Session involves, since Uber does not describe it.
- Practice experiment design for marketplaces: power and sample size, switchback and cluster-randomized tests, and difference in differences.
- Practice SQL and Python together for the 60-minute live coding round, including a data structures and algorithms problem.
- Review ML for Uber's problems, such as ETAs, demand forecasting, pricing and fraud, from the model to the metric it moves.
- Prepare one or two projects per competency, stating your own role and the technical trade-offs you made.
- Write stories for Uber's values, such as Trip Obsessed and One Uber, and practice an elevator pitch of your career.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many rounds is the Uber applied scientist interview?
Uber's Sciences guide lists a 30-minute recruiter or sourcer call, 60 minutes of live coding, a 60-minute Jam Session and 4 to 6 team interviews of 45 minutes each, then a decision. Uber says steps may vary by role, location and business need.
What is the Uber Jam Session?
It is a 60-minute virtual step in Uber's Sciences interview guide, between live coding and the team interviews. Uber does not describe it, and we found no readable candidate report that does. Ask your recruiter what it covers.
Can I use AI tools in an Uber applied scientist interview?
No. Uber's Sciences guide says: "Important: While we embrace AI in our work, do not use any external assistance during the interview process. This includes search engines, documentation sites, collaboration with others, or AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar."
How much do Uber applied scientists make?
In postings seen in October 2026, an Applied Science subteam Scientist II role lists $161K to $179K base in San Francisco, and a Senior Scientist role lists $190K to $211K in New York City and San Francisco. Both mention bonus and equity, and both were marked as removed when we read them.
Does Uber hire Applied Scientists or Scientists?
Both names point to the same work. Uber's interview guide and older postings use Applied Scientist and Sr Applied Scientist. Current postings use Scientist II, Senior Scientist and Staff Scientist, with the subteam set to Applied Science or Data Science.
How is an applied scientist different from a data scientist or ML engineer at Uber?
Uber has not published an explicit split. Applied Science and Data Science subteam postings share the same title ladder, degree fields and experiment design requirements, and Uber's Sciences page says some scientists inform business decisions while others build and deploy real-time models. Machine Learning Engineer is an engineering role: its pricing posting centers on productionizing models, MLOps, real-time systems and microservices, with scientists as collaborators.
Does Uber hire applied science interns?
Yes. Uber's Emerging Talent page lists Data Science & Applied Science Internships for university students and new graduates, without eligibility or timing details. Uber's VP of Applied Science says these early career programs now run in every office where those teams sit, and interns work on data design, experimentation and modeling.
